NationalCampaign Daily Intention

We ask God that we may understand the concept of justice, as agift he gives and as a responsibility that shapes our work.

Letjustice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never‐failing stream!
 —Amos 5:24 —

Justice, a key theme of the Scriptures, is something God doesand that we too must do. When God intervenes to save his people when they are helplessand in slavery in Egypt, he “does justice.” He manifested his justice in the plagues that were sent uponEgypt, whereby Pharaoh was convinced that he must let the people go. Justice is manifested as, in awe and wonder, God’s people seethe Red Sea open before them, allow them to pass without even getting theirfeet wet, and then close again to drown their powerful enemies. God is a God of Justice; he rescues us when we cannot saveourselves.

His justice, above all, is seen in Jesus Christ, who, when wecould not save ourselves, rescued us from the kingdom of sin, Satan, death, andhell. The mighty work of Christ on the cross and in the resurrectionis the perfect manifestation of God as the God of justice. We, then, are to bethe people of justice; we are to “do justice” by intervening to save thehelpless in the name and by the power of the God who saves us who are helplessourselves.

That’s why we have a pro‐life movement; that’s why we have a 40Days for Life Campaign; that’s why saving the unborn is our business.

UnexpectedBlessings!

One of theunexpected blessings of this 40 Days for Life campaign thus far is theunprecedented number of media stories about local campaigns -- and it's notjust the number of stories but the tone of those reports. Many of them havebeen highly positive!

An extremelyfavorable article about the 40 Days for Life kickoff appeared in the JournalStar, the daily newspaper in Peoria, Illinois. Here's the first part of thatstory:

Cathy Trowbridge had an abortion andlived to tell about it. Not overnight, mind you. But after 34 soul-searchingyears, the Princeton resident is silent no more.

"Not everybody can do this,"Trowbridge said Tuesday night at a rally at Riverfront Park to launch the 40Days for Life campaign. "Not everyone that has had an abortion can standhere and be able to face a crowd. But that courage comes from Him who selectsthose that can do it." …

Read the wholestory at: http://tinyurl.com/ydhfowq

What apowerful account -- and in a secular newspaper! It's a valuable insight intothe mind of the woman who seeks abortion, and something to keep in mind as youpray. Abortionclearly leaves a lasting negative impact.

You even maymeet someone at the 40 Days for Life vigil in your own community who has astory similar to Cathy's. The 40 Days for Life team in Bakersfield, Californiaknows it is more common than you might think. Here's a posting from their blog:

During Saturday's kickoff rally, avolunteer noticed a forlorn woman standing near the vigil signup sheets."I sensed that God wanted me to talk to her," the volunteer said.

"Can I help you sign up for atime to pray at the vigil?" the volunteer asked. The woman seemedreluctant at first. As the volunteer continued to talk to her, eventually sheopened up to share the internal struggle she was experiencing.

"Twenty-five years ago," shebegan, "I aborted my baby. Maybe if people like you had been there, mybaby's life could have been saved.

News on TwoMore Reno Saves!

All our savesdon’t occur at the sidewalk and those that do occur there often go unnoticed, sometimes forever, sometimes to be revealed months or years later.  Today, we learn of two saves that have come from our campaign efforts.

Pat calledfrom the sidewalk.   She’d been there since the early morning hoursthrough the day, and returned for the evening when she got the news that gaveher the boost needed to get her through the night.   “I’m so excited;I’m ready to stay here all night, No Problem!”   So, what had Pat soexcited?

While prayingwith several of the regulars who have been coming to the sidewalk since ourfirst campaign (or for some, since even before that) a pick-up truck drove pastslowly, turned around and made another pass.   One of the newvolunteers expressed concern for their safety, not knowing why this vehicleseemed to be checking them out.   It was late enough that theabortion site was already closed so it wasn’t a client looking for thelocation.   When this couple finally stopped they said they werelooking for the gray haired gentleman who is so frequently at thesidewalk.   They wanted to introduce Richard to their 8 ½ month olddaughter.

Apparently, this young father’s own dad is a doctor and a personal friend of Dr. DamonStutes, the abortionist who runs the West End Abortion Site.   Whenhe learned that his son was going to become a young father, he referred him andthe mother of his child to Stutes to have an abortion.   “You’re tooyoung to be parents,” they were told.   While they were at the abortionsite, Richard started a conversation with them, and through his loving witness, they ended up choosing to give their daughter life.

For much ofthe pregnancy, they were prepared to give their child up for adoption, but whenthe learned that the adoptive family was a lesbian couple, they realized thatthey really weren’t ready to have someone else raise their babygirl.   Now, this young father wanted to tell everyone at thesidewalk that his daughter is absolutely the best thing that has ever happenedto him.   As a result of making the choice to be a parent and all thechanges that have come from having to take responsibility for his life, he hascome to know Jesus Christ, and he is currently in the RCIA program, and expectsto enter the Catholic Church at Easter next year.   Not only was alife saved, but a soul as well!   Praise be to God!

But thiswasn’t the only story of life that came to me today!

A friend, whomI met over the course of working on 40 Days for Life, attends the Valley ViewChristian Fellowship.   During the last campaign she offered whatlooks like an excellent course on Abortion to the members of her church, overthe course of approximately 8 weeks.   On the last week of theprogram, she invited me to present our Vigil Volunteer Workshop to the participants.  Among the participants in her course were several teens.   I turnsout that one of these girls has just found that she’s unexpectedlypregnant.   Certainly it would have been better if she had maintaineda chaste relationship, but that decision is already behind her, now she hadanother choice to make, what to do about the reality she is nowfacing.   Because of the exposure she got to the reality of abortion,as reviewed during this course (based on the Bethlehem Institute’s “Abortion isAbout God: Reframing a Moral Issue) she had no hesitation as to what she wasgoing to do.

Sadly, she hashad difficulties at home in the past, such that a social worker has beenassigned to her case.   While her supportive parents were there forher, offering their assistance with her pregnancy and supporting her decisionto give life to her child, the social worker told her she would personally helpher get to an appointment at Planned Parenthood, even if she wanted to do sobehind her parent’s backs.   Is this what happens if you allow asocial worker to help your child learn to make responsibledecisions?   Thank God this girl was already well aware of whatabortion is really all about and she knew for herself that it was not a choiceshe wanted to make.

Vigil SupportNeeded This Weekend and Beyond

If you’vealready experienced the sidewalk in front of the abortion site, considerinviting a friend to join you, someone who has never before gone to Pray to EndAbortion.   Let’s share this experience with as many new people aspossible and let’s do so as soon as possible, so we can continue to fill thehours in our constant vigil.   To register for the hours when you’llbe at the sidewalk, go to: http://www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe  Ithank you in advance for your support.

40Days through Scripture

Day4: Matthew 19 – 24 (including:  Matt21:18-22)
When hewas going back to the city in the morning, he was hungry.  Seeing afig tree by the road, he went over to it, but found nothing on it exceptleaves.   And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from youagain.”   And immediately the fig tree withered.   When thedisciples saw this, they were amazed and said, “How was it that the fig treewithered immediately?”   Jesus said to them in reply, “Amen, I say toyou, if you have faith and do not waver, not only will you do what has beendone to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up andthrown into the sea.’   It will be done.   Whatever you askfor in prayer with faith, you will receive.”

North DakotaBishop Asks All Priests to Spend "At Least One Hour" Outside AbortionFacility

Bishophimself commits to prayer hours with 40 Days for Life. [LifeSiteNews.com FARGO, ND, September 25, 2009] - Bishop Samuel J. Aquila, the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo, joined pro-life advocates for anhour of prayer this morning at 11:00, in front of a local abortion facility. His time of prayer coincides with the 40 Days for Life campaign, which beganSept. 23 in more than 200 communities nationwide. This is the third annual 40 Days for Life campaign to be held inNorth Dakota.

In addition to his own participation in the pro-life campaign,Bishop Aquila also recently sent a letter to allpriests of his diocese, asking them to participate in the 40 Days for Lifecampaign. In a Sept. 23 letter to priests, he wrote:
"I will pray on the sidewalk in front of the abortionfacility on Friday, September 25, at 11 a.m. and again on Respect Life Sundaywhen I lead a Eucharistic procession to the abortion facility, carrying ourLord in the Blessed Sacrament to the site of death for so many of his children.

"I ask that each of you schedule at least one hour ofprayer outside the abortion facility during these 40 days. I realize this willrequire great sacrifice for some of you in terms of miles traveled and timeaway from other pastoral duties. Yet I am confident that much fruit will comefrom your time spent in conversation with God at the site of this modern day, legally protected holocaust. Please also encourage your parishioners to take upthe cross of Christ for the most vulnerable among us."

His letter to priests continues, "Most especially in the'Year for Priests' we too are called to sacrifice - to carry the cross ofChrist. With Christ we stand in prayerful witness, in the cold, the rain, thesnow, enduring the glances of hatred and the words of disgust from those who donot understand. In faithful hope we pray that some will come to understand, that hearts will be transformed, unborn babies will be saved from death andparents will escape the agony of later realizing that their choice ended thelife of their child."

The 40 Days for Life campaign is a national ecumenical effort ofprayer, fasting and peaceful prayer and presence outside abortion facilities. The North Dakota campaign includes 40 days of non-stop prayer on the sidewalkoutside the Red River Women’s Clinic at 512 1st Ave. N., Fargo. We pray for God’s gift of strength as we strive to protect humanlife during 40 Days for Life

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what youwill eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life moreimportant than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at thebirds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet yourheavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
—Matthew6:2526 —

Billionsof dollars are spent each year on diet plans. But Jesus tells us to stopworrying so much about our bodies, and instead to trust in God’s care for ourphysical needs.
Whatwould happen if the people who had started on a low‐carb diet this year hadinstead gone on a diet of heavenly food?   For non‐believers thatdiet would include trusting in Christ for their salvation, and for believers itwould include a renewed prayer life, a new Bible study, or even a spiritualfast.

Thisdiet doesn’t include giving up on certain kinds of foods.   What thisdiet includes is giving up on anxiety by resting in the loving arms of Christ, trusting that He will provide.   Such a spiritual diet also frees usfrom our worries, and allows us to freely praise Him and serve others.  Christ’s words bear repeating:

ThereforeI tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or aboutyour body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and thebody more important than clothes?   Look at the birds of the air;they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Fatherfeeds them.   Are you not much more valuable than they?

Thispromised provision teaches us the inestimable worth of our lives.  He will not allow us to go without.   This intimateknowledge and care for human life on the part of our gracious God is whatmotivates us to seek for the preservation of human life in all its stages.

AbortionWorker Quits!

In my messageto you on Tuesday, I said, "When it comes to 40 Days for Life, expect theunexpected!"

And yes, eventhough I said that, the e-mail message I received from Tim Palmquist with the40 Days for Life team in Bakersfield, California was REALLY unexpected.
Tim wrote,"An employee of the Bakersfield Family Planning Association abortioncenter has just quit!"

The womanwalked out of the building and spoke to Rosa, who was taking part in the prayervigil, and told her, "I'm done with this place!" The woman also saidshe had turned in her uniform. Rosa quickly offered a hug, which the formeremployee accepted.

All this time, another vigil participant was watching. It was the first time she had ever goneto pray at an abortion center. Rosa turned to her and said, "Do you seethe power of prayer?" After seeing this amazing turn of events, the newvolunteer said she wants to spend much more time at the vigil during these 40days.
This happenedWednesday -- yes, the FIRST DAY of this 40 Days for Life campaign!

WOW!

Jim in GreenBay, Wisconsin writes, "Michael and I just walked the first shift of thisyear's vigil." He and Michael really didn't know each other well at first."But now we do. 40 Days for Life has a way of bringing folkstogether."
Jim describesthe late night/early morning scene as warm, slightly muggy, but beautifullyquiet. "We counted three horn honks with thumbs-up signals," henoted. "We also spoke to a young couple who were walking across thehospital parking lot. The young woman saw our signs and shouted encouragementsaying, 'We're not aborting! We're having a baby!' Michael and I shouted backour approval and encouragement.
Michaelobserved how we never, ever know how our presence impacts people. This vigil, like the prayer that it is, reaches far beyond those whom we can see and feeland touch -- which is just how the hand of God operates.

Procession& Kick-off Rally Rousing Success

Inaddition to the untoppable success of a life saved, our campaign started on theright note with a well attended Procession and Kick-off Rally.  There were 50 participants of these evening events, and the reaction ofpassersby was, for the most part, strongly in support of our message thatAbortion Kills Children, as we asked that on-lookers Pray to EndAbortion.
Andif the presence of a great group of new volunteers weren’t enough, we were alsoblessed with the presence of signs that are new to the sidewalk.  Each day, he drove by and saw the faithful witness of Richard and Tony, as theystood with their signs, imploring those who pass by to pay attention to thetruth that Abortion Kills Children, and praying that each mother headed to theabortion site might change her mind and spare her child.   But henoticed that their signs seemed difficult to read for the those who weredriving by for the first time.   The more he saw them, the more hefelt that he needed to do something to help, but he didn’t know what he coulddo to make a difference.   Finally, he took it to prayer, and afterpraying he felt called to donate large format signs that he could leave withthese constant prayer warriors, who are at the sidewalk 5 mornings each week.  Come see them yourself, these 8 foot long, 2 feet high signs, that read“Abortion Stops A Beating Heart.”

40Days through Scripture

Day3: Matthew 13 – 18
Including:  Matt 18:6-9   Whoever causes one of these littleones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a greatmillstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of thesea.   Woe to the world because of things that cause sin!  Such things must come, but woe to the one through whom they come!  If you hand or foot causes you to sin, cut if off and throw itaway.   It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippledthan with two hands or two feet to be thrown into eternal fire.   Andif your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.   It isbetter for you to enter into life with one eye than with two eyes to be throwninto fiery Gehenna.

Whenwe allow laws like legalized abortion to stand, are we not guilty of leadingthese girls to the sin that damns them?   Are we not obliged to findthem and bring them to repentance through Jesus, Our Lord?   Do wenot need to tear from the fabric of our land and the Laws that guide it, anytraces of abortion as a legal option, so that the entire land not rot under theevil it perpetuates?   We must exorcise abortion laws from our landnow.

More on Dominican Republic Passage ofComplete Abortion Ban

[LifeSiteNews,September 24, 2009, (C-FAM) BySamantha Singson] Last week, lawmakers in the Dominican Republic gave theirfinal approval to a pro-life constitutional change despite fierce criticism andpressure from UN agencies and abortion advocates to defeat the measure. The Dominican Republic’s National Assembly easily ratified a revision ofArticle 30 in a vote of 128 in favor with 32 opposed. The article now statesthat "the right to life is inviolable from conception until death."

Whilethe measure was widely supported by Dominican parliamentarians, it met withstaunch opposition from international abortion proponents and even UN agencies, which are officially neutral on abortion. Last April, when the right-to-lifeprovision was first debated, two UN officials interjected themselves into thedebate. Nils Kastberg, UNICEF's regional director for Latin America and theCaribbean, called on Dominican legislators to consider liberalizing abortion sowomen would not be forced into "unsafe procedures." Kastberg alsosuggested that lawmakers would be "hypocrites" unconcerned with thenation's higher-than-average teen birth rate.
UnitedNations Program for Human Development coordinator Miguel Ceara Hattoncriticized the article stating the constitutional revision encourages theincidence of clandestine abortions and maternal deaths and disregards a woman’sright to life.  Hatton also took aim at the Catholic Church stating thatit had "influence in everything" and that, "for following adogma [the Church] has become a source and a motor for social exclusion in theDominican Republic. The dogma is placed ahead of the needs of the population, health, housing and better living conditions. "
Contraryto the positions these UN officials took, the United Nations website maintainsthat "the legal status of abortion is the sovereign right of eachnation" and that the organization "does not provide support forabortion or abortion related activities anywhere in the world."

Pray for those who workin the abortion industry, and for those who have repented of committingabortions and have resolved to defend life.

Jesus called out with aloud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this,he breathed his last. The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God andsaid, “Surely this was a righteous man.”
—Luke23:4647

“Those of us who have participated in the killing of unbornchildren are the Centurions of today. We have dropped our swords against theunborn child. Now we must recognize the depth of our guilt and deal with theramifications... To revitalize our humanity we need to forgive and be forgiven,to reconcile and be healed.”
These words come from a brochure of the Society of Centurions,an organization for former abortion providers. These words convey in abeautiful and moving way what is happening across the nation as hundreds ofabortionists and their staff members experience repentance, conversion, andhealing.
How does this conversion begin? Dr. Philip Ney writes, “Thefactors that hanged their opinion on performing abortions, in the followingorder of frequency, were: evidence of the infant’s humanity, a spiritualexperience, personal distress, evidence of the mother’s distress, scientificarticles, being accepted as a person, a personal relationship with a pro-lifer,pro-life pickets.” (The Centurion’s Pathway, p. 77).
The journey is not easy. But the Jesus who heals us calls us toface the truth of what we’ve done, make restitution where possible, and engagein the hard work of mending relationships. Let’s pray for the Centurions; maytheir numbers increase!

Baby Saved at Kick-Off Event!

At the St. Louis kickoff rally that evening, "we sang, prayed and had achance to meet many new people," said local coordinator Brian Westbrook."God truly blessed us with an exciting night."

Butthe excitement was just beginning. At the end of the long day, Brian went home, checked his e-mail and found this message:

Reno AlreadyRealizes Our 1st Save!

Day 2 – We’vejust finished our Kick-off Procession and Rally and already we have our 1stsave to report from the Reno Abortion Site!   While at the sidewalk,Carol Marie and Caryle were blessed to have the opportunity to participate in savinga child on the first day of our local campaign.   Aida came to theabortion site, conflicted about her 14 week pregnancy.   Herboyfriend is uncertain that he’s prepared for the responsibilities of being afather and she fears for where she’ll live if she continues thepregnancy.   Thankfully, we were there to let her know that there areoptions to an abortion, she can make another choice, she can give her childlife and we are there to help her meet whatever needs come her way.

I was able toshare with her the story from the last week of our Spring Campaign, when afather came out to explain to the sidewalk counselors why he and his wife wereat the abortion site.   The child his wife was carrying was not his,and while they were both Hispanic, the man who had fathered this child wasAnglo.   How could he possibly raise such a child that would be aconstant reminder of his wife’s infidelity?   Members from ourcampaign worked with him to help him appreciate that every child is a gift fromGod, but that if he was unable to raise the child, a home could be found, thatabortion did not have to be the answer to this dilemma.   He was putin touch with a Spanish speaking nun who continued to work with the couple andthey were also referred to the Reno Crisis Pregnancy Center.
Just lastweekend, a baby shower was held for this couple and the husband is now thrilledthat they will be having a son, the son they have always wanted.  And the community has stepped forward to provide for their needs, as they add athird child to their family.

Hearing thisstory gave Aida the courage she needed to choose life for herchild.   We also shared with her the developmental facts about herchild, using the “Before You Choose” brochure which we have available in bothSpanish and English.   She now realizes that she is already a mom andshe is beginning to appreciate that she has a responsibility to protect herunborn child.   Please pray for her as she continues to work throughthe challenges ahead.   She still needs to discuss this decision withthe father of her child.   Let us pray that he appreciate the beautyof the unexpected life that is now growing within her womb.

40Days through Scripture

Day 2: Matthew 8 – 12
Matt11:20-24   Then he began to reproach the towns where most of hismighty deeds had been done, since they had not repented.  “Woe to you,Chorazin!  Woe to you, Bethsaida!  For if the mighty deeds done inyour midst had been done in Tyre or Sidon, they would long ago have repented insackcloth and ashes.  But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyreand Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.   And as for you,Capernaum:  ‘Will you be exalted in heaven?  You will go down to thenetherworld.’ For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done inSodom, it would have remained until this day.   But I tell you, itwill be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than foryou.”
Do we tend to forget, in all that weknow of God’s infinite Love, that He is also infinite Justice and that He haspromised that Hell is also possible for those who do not repent of their sin?

Poland Catholic Magazine Fined forCriticizing Woman's Abortion Decision

Warsaw, Poland(LifeNews.com) -- A court in Poland today fined a Catholic magazine for likening a woman to akiller for wanting to get an abortion allegedly because she would go blind ifshe did not have an abortion. Take a Step of Faith and Join This Prayerful Effort

Whether you've participated in 40 Days for Life before, or you're along on this journey for the very first time, thank you taking the step of faith to join this prayerful effort.

What is 40 Days for Life? Bishop Richard Malone of Portland, Maine offered about the best one-sentence answer I've yet seen: "40 Days for Life is the work of the Holy Spirit, a divine inspiration in the ongoing effort to end the plague of abortion."

And how does the Holy Spirit work? Often, in the hearts of those who join this effort to pray for others. When it comes to 40 Days for Life, expect the unexpected! That message is clear in what people are saying about 40 Days for Life.

A blogger just posted: "As I sit here tonight awaiting the kickoff rally tomorrow, while holding my precious sleeping infant, I praise God for the gift of life." But she writes with mixed emotions. Six years ago, she became pregnant as the result of rape. She chose life for her son, and arranged for a loving couple to adopt her child. "Six years later," she writes, "I still know and feel I made the right decision, but I miss him. So, tonight as I write this, I think about the women who go in for an abortion and wonder how I can make a difference. I realize that I can make a difference by being there praying for them, praying to God that their mind changes away from abortion." She is thankful for 40 Days for Life "because I believe it truly touches the hearts of the women who come there for an abortion. I am eagerly anticipating the Lord's goodness in this fall's campaign."

Then there's Val in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, who expressed her thoughts in a letter to the editor of the local newspaper: "Last spring I volunteered in the 40 Days for Life campaign. For 40 days I joined other volunteers to pray for the unborn in front of the Planned Parenthood clinic. We didn't pray only for the unborn. We also prayed for the women facing unplanned pregnancies. We prayed that those facing these circumstances would consider other alternatives such as adoption. My family adopted a child whose mother once faced an unplanned pregnancy. After making an appointment to end her pregnancy, she changed her mind when she encountered volunteers who were present the day of her appointment, praying on behalf of the unborn. This child has been such a blessing to our family. God has a plan for each one of us, and I'm seeing that, especially in the case of this child."

This fall from September 23 to November 1, another 40 Days for Life campaign will take place. I hope many will come and join us as we pray. Miracles really do happen."

The Schedule, while filling, Needs Your Help!

Day 1 – We have more churches involved in the campaign than ever before, preachers are addressing the subject from the pulpit and the media is even interested in what we’re doing for the first time since we started with a small campaign in the Fall of 2007.   But this campaign requires that all Christians come forward, and declare the truth we all know, that Abortion Kills Children and we can no longer look the other way.   Please join us as we Pray to End Abortion on the sidewalk of the darkest corner in our community, the sidewalk at the abortion site.   We come to bring the light of truth to those caught in the web of lies.   Be a witness to Christ, come and share His Love through prayer.

Coming Events

40 Days through Scripture

Day 1: Matthew 1 – 7 (including: Matt 6:19)
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroys, and thieves break in and steal.  But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroy, nor thieves break in and steal.   For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

Consider the heavenly treasure that awaits those who do God’s will, for they have their eyes on heaven.

Vienna Cardinal Forbids Famous Pro-Life Bishop to Attend Pro-Life Rally

(LifeSiteNews.com VIENNA, September 22, 2009 By Hilary White) - When pro-life demonstrators in Vienna marched to City Hall earlier this month to protest the hosting by the mayor of a celebration for a notorious local abortion facility, one prominent member of Austria's pro-life world was not present. Bishop Andreas Laun, an auxiliary of Salzburg, told marchers at a Mass prior to the event that he had been forbidden to attend the demonstration by the cardinal archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Schönborn.

Bishop Laun is one of the recipients of the Von Galen Award, an honor given by Human Life International "to a Catholic prelate who has been a voice of conscience for his society." He said at the Mass that preceded the rally, "Cardinal Schönborn has told me on the phone that he does not want that I participate in the demonstration. I replied to him, 'This topic can hardly be discussed on the phone,' and [thought] that I will not be able to convince him. Since Schönborn is the archbishop of Vienna, I have to respect his decision according to canon law."

Bishop Laun said he respected the cardinal's decision and added, "There is a blessing on all legitimate forms of obedience in the Church." He had been scheduled by rally organizers to speak at the demonstration and to lead prayers outside City Hall.    Read the entire article on LifeSiteNews.com

Media Analysis Says Pro-Life Group Right, Baucus Health Care Bill Funds Abortions

(LifeNews.com, Washington, DC) -- A new media analysis is verifying the contention of a pro-life group that says the new Baucus health care bill funds abortions. As is the case with HR 3200 and the Kennedy bill in the Senate, National Right to Life says the Baucus bill also contains massive abortion subsidies and mandates. The Pulitzer-prize winning PolitiFact web site, operated by the St. Petersburg Times newspaper, is respected as a web site that looks into political claims. In a new analysis released on Monday, it verifies as true the National Right to Life take on the Baucus bill that it "contains provisions that would send massive federal subsidies directly to both private insurance plans and government-chartered cooperatives that pay for elective abortion." PolitiFact says the NRLC view of the bill "get[s] to the heart of the rhetoric on both sides of the debate."   Read the entire article at Lifenews.com …

40 Days for Life will be participating on Sunday at a Church picnic and possibly on Saturday afternoon as well. Are you available to stand at a booth and invite others to join us as we Pray to End Abortion? We will also be promoting the campaign at this Thursday’s Catholic Professional & Business Group breakfast. We’d love to see you there!

Donors Desired to Underwrite E-Mail Service & Fund Purchases

For the campaign this Fall we hope to use a professional e-mail distribution service. This is another expense you can help support. Please donate by sending a check to Carol Marie at PO Box 7548, Tahoe City, CA 96145.
We are pleased to announce that Heritage House has extended their sale, so we are able to purchase the items needed for the campaign at rock bottom prices. Please donate to allow us to get a banner which will be used when promoting the campaign, as well as at our various rallies. We would also like to purchase 50 lawn signs for distribution during the campaign, through our Door-to-Door campaign and to local volunteers and churches. Bumper stickers, bookmarks and business cards with Post-Abortion healing information are additional items we would like to be able to distribute.
We would also like to get the quantity pricing on the banners. To do this, we are hoping that several area churches will purchase a banner for their own use, through us. When we have 5 banners, each will cost only $89 apiece, reduced from full price at $165, near 50% in savings.

Men Wanted for “Knight Shift” at the Sidewalk
We are looking for men to cover the Knight Shift during the coming 40 Days for Life campaign, which runs from September 23 – November 1st, to ensure that there is prayer coverage at the sidewalk from 6 pm – 6 am.

Is your church listed on our website? If so, contact your Church Coordinator and offer to assist them with Adopt a Day at your church. It takes a team of people to work the tables after church, signing up the members of your congregation. If you have multiple services each Sunday, this increases the number of people who can assist in this effort.
If your church isn’t listed, please take it to prayer to determine if you are called to help us promote the 40 Days for Life to your church community. Even if you don’t coordinate an Adopt-a-Day, you can encourage individuals to gather in prayer, either at the sidewalk, at your church or in a home. We are raised up on the prayers and fasting of individuals from their own homes and to get that prayer support, people need to know about our campaign. You can help us in this effort, by simply forwarding our emails to family and friends, encouraging them to subscribe.

Graphic Images Come to University of Nevada, Reno

There are a range of methods for helping others to appreciate the reality of what abortion really means. One of these methods is the use of graphic images. Don Blythe and his companions from Sacramento have been in town displaying their graphic images on the UNR campus. While the use of graphic images isn’t incorporated into the 40 Days for Life campaign, they have been shown to help young college students reassess what abortion really is. And this is the age-group most likely to find themselves facing an unexpected pregnancy. Therefore, this method of sharing the Truth, although difficult to stomach, saves lives.

October 4 is National Life Chain Sunday. Elizabeth Labat has stepped forward to coordinate the effort. Please ensure you have ordered signs for your church by Sept 18, so we have sufficient time to get them from the printer. What event would you like to see to spread the truth that Abortion Kills Children? Please step forward and we will support you by publicizing your efforts through our distribution that now reaches over 500 email accounts, not even counting the numerous churches and pastors on our list.

Pastor Walter Hoye Moved Hearts in Tahoe City

Pastor Walter Hoye, and his faithful wife Lori, came to Tahoe to give us a heart moving talk on how the Lord worked through him and spoke to his heart through his recent experience of being incarcerated for having the audacity to stand on a sidewalk and ask women if he might offer them another option to the clinic they were approaching. Walter’s case has the potential of ending up in the United States Supreme Court as a challenge to our First Amendment Rights, and anyone who knows Walter knows that he is the perfect person to represent us in this battle. God has certainly chosen well and Walter, faithful as he is, has allowed God to form him for this challenge. His gentle, humble demeanor will hold him well through the court battles ahead, as he and his lawyers strive to ensure that we all continue to have the right to proclaim the truth in all corners of our nation, even on the sidewalk in front of an abortion site, even in the City of Oakland.
Walter shared with us that during his incarceration, the Lord wrote three things on his heart and I believe these are worth sharing.

1st The extent to which you Love the World is the extent to which you are compromised by the World

2nd The extent to which you are willing to suffer is the extent to which you are willing to do My Will.

3rd The extent to which you are willing to defend life is the extent to which you will have life.

I think these words of wisdom are worth taking to prayer, as we strive to know God’s will for our lives. Humanity was created in the image and likeness of God Himself. As such, the killing of innocent children is a grave offense against an all loving God. How are we going to work to end this offense? How are we going to bring the body of Christ together to work on this issue, so that we are one, as He and the Father are one? What role will you play?

Team Meeting – Weds, September 2nd, 6:30 pm, South Valley’s Library

There will be a team meeting for 40 Days for Life team members, at the South Valley’s Library in Reno on Weds, Sept 2. The meeting will run from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. We will go through how to use the on-line scheduling tool to register our volunteers and review the materials available to manage the Adopt a Day program at your church. We will also discuss other ways your church can cooperate in making the campaign a success.
Team members are asked to review the information listed on the roster they received in a separate email and as posted on our website. The team information has been included on the website, so please visit the site to see how things are growing! To see what is currently posted, go to:
www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/contactus

Please RSVP so I will know approximately how many will be at the meeting, and can appropriately plan to have the necessary materials available. If you are unfamiliar with how to find the South Valley’s Library, we have a map on our website, at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/SouthValleysLibrary. The library is located at 15650 Wedge Parkway, Reno, near the base of the Mt. Rose Highway.
Those who are not yet on the team, but who would like additional information are welcome to attend. Please RSVP, either by email:
renotahoe@40DaysforLife.com or by phone: 530-412-1573.

Reno, Tahoe, Carson City Join 212 Cities for the Fall Campaign

The Nationwide / International 40 Days for Life continues to grow, as we now have 212 cities registered to participate in the Fall 2009 Campaign. Since 40 Days for Life began, 240 cities have completed a campaign and 41 new cities will be holding a campaign this Fall. All 50 States have participated in one campaign or another since the Fall of 2007. In addition to the United States, the campaign thus far has been run in Canada, Australia, Northern Ireland and now Denmark. A total of 1561 lives are known to have been saved (these are just those lives that have been verified to us as saved because of the campaign due to the mother or another person stopping to tell us that they have changed their minds.)
In addition to 7 known saves in Reno, it is our belief that the abortion site was previously open 5 days a week, with an average of 15 women entering for abortions each day. Now that we have held several campaigns of prayer, the abortion site is only open 3 days each week, and we estimate that as few as 5 women enter the facility to abort their child each day. These numbers may not be correct, but if they are, something is happening to significantly reduce the number of abortions locally performed at this site. Please join us as we continue the effort to further reduce the local deaths due to abortion.

Our List of Team Members Continues to Grow!

This campaign is gearing up to be a roaring success. I’ve been so busy signing on new members of our ever growing team that I’ve hardly had time to catch my breath! Ah, what a wonderful problem to have!

Calendar Managers
Thus far, the following people have stepped forward and accepted the role of Calendar Manager for the following days:
Monday Katie Shoen
Tuesday Shirley Beasley
Wednesday Donna Kelly
Thursday Theresa Cobb & Rachel Mattos
Friday Brian Hanifan
Saturday Mary Vidimos
Sunday Still Open

The calendar managers will work to ensure that our calendar is filled for their day of the week, each week during the course of the campaign. They will work with churches that step forward to adopt a day at the sidewalk, helping them to enter their volunteers onto the calendar, and they will be calling previous volunteers looking to fill those hours which remain open. Please help them to know what hours need coverage by signing up for your hours on our on-line calendar. Note, there is a separate calendar for Reno and Carson City.

There are many more churches, schools and men’s groups in our area that could use a Coordinator. Please take this request to prayer and consider answering the call to help the campaign this Fall. As with several churches already listed, this is a job which can be shared by two people. Perhaps you know someone who would be willing to join you in this effort, so that the members of your church can more easily participate as we join to Pray to End Abortion. When we each play our role, the body of Christ is animated in the world.
Event Planners
Life Chain – Reno Sunday, October 4 - Elizabeth Labat

Our Kick-Off Rally will be held at the West End Abortion site, located at 5915 Tyrone Rd., Reno at 7:00 pm. We are working on plans for something special before the Rally, watch for details for this exciting component to the day, but block off time starting at 6:15 pm just in case!
We would also like to hold an end of the campaign Celebration. Is this something you can either help plan, or provide volunteer assistance in its execution?

Door-to-Door Campaign Volunteers

In previous campaigns, Donna Kelly, our Calendar Coordinator for Wednesdays, has coordinated our Door-to-door campaign, “an effort I initially participated in with very little enthusiasm” said Carol Marie. “The idea of going to people’s homes and speaking to them about the Pro-Life viewpoint was extremely intimidating,” she shared. And yet those who participated in this aspect of the campaign found that they were far better received than anticipated. This aspect of the campaign has played a large role in the success of 40 Days for Life efforts elsewhere in the nation and we would like to continue to reach out to new members of our community. Would you like to be part of this outreach effort? If so, reply with your interest or call 530-412-1573.

Campaign Support Positions
Webmaster - Suzie Ama
Blogmaster - Veronica Tarquinio

Suzie and Veronica will be assisting in our on-line communications with volunteers and the public, through our website and our blog. I would like to personally thank them for making my life easier!

Nevada Right to Life Went to the State Fair Aug 26th – 30th

Nevada Right to Life returned to the Nevada State Fair this summer where they continued to reach out to people from across the state, and shared with them the message, that life is precious from conception through natural death. Again their booth was one of the most well attended of all those on their row of booths! People are ready to learn more about life issues and are willing to step forward to be counted as pro-life.

Support Needed

Additional Contributors Wanted
Generous donors stepped up and underwrote the highly successful BBQ for Life Celebration, featuring Pastor Walter Hoye, and attended by members of 30 area churches, many clergy among those present. While we met our goal of reaching the area clergy, this was not a fund raising event. We are therefore in need of additional donations to assist with the ongoing overhead of running this campaign. We are in serious need of your support to purchase yard signs, & banners and to cover the day to day costs of keeping the campaign going, such as a new email distribution channel that we hope to have on-line before the beginning of the campaign. We could use another $700 to cover costs already incurred. If you can contribute, please email renotahoe@40DaysforLife.com , or call me at 530-412-1573. We are not yet a 501(c)3, so unfortunately donations are NOT tax deductible.

If we get sufficient support, it is possible that we may move forward towards establishing the necessary corporation to support an application for non-profit status. Becoming an organization has never been our goal, our interest is in bringing people together to Pray to End Abortion. But we have found that there are strong reasons for having a formal organizational structure. Please vote with your financial support or reply with your thoughts one way or the other.

Knights of Columbus & Men’s Groups Invited for Sidewalk “Knight Shift”
Local Knights of Columbus Councils are being encouraged to cover the Knight Shift during the coming 40 Days for Life campaign, which runs from September 23 – November 1st to ensure that there is prayer coverage at the sidewalk from 6 pm – 6 am. “If each council steps up for 3 or 4 nights during the campaign, we should be able to ensure that we have 24 hour coverage this time around” said Carol Marie when asked about the Fall campaign.
