National Campaign Daily Intention

Pray that when those representing Planned Parenthood and other abortion groups see volunteers for 40 Days for Life, they see ambassadors of Christ, and may each volunteer be consciously aware at all times of Whom we represent.

I...beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness, and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one an‐other in love.— Ephesians 4:1b2

When Carol Everett, a former abortionist and post‐abortive woman, was asked what turned her heart from death to life in Christ, she said, “It was unconditional love,” shown by a man ho prayed daily for her in front of the abortion clinic where she worked.

He told Carol that “God had sent him” because there was someone in there that God wanted out. She left 27 days later and now serves as Christ’s ambassador to help others. We too have been sent by Christ as an ambassador to love unconditionally those God seeks to “get out” of their bondage and sin. What a high calling it is ‐‐ much higher than any presidential appointment to another country.

In his book, Fishers of Men, Dr. Sumner Wemp describes what it means to be an ambassador of Jesus Christ, the King of Kings:

  • God has chosen us (John 15:16)
  • We are sent into a world that is our home (1 Peter 2:11)
  • Our walk must match our talk (1Timothy 3:7)
  • We must abide in him for daily instruction (John 15:5)
  • Know our purpose to seek and to save that which is lost (Luke 19:10)
  • We are to reconcile others to God with His authority (Matthew 28:19‐20)
  • Do not let kindness and truth leave you (Proverbs 3:3‐4)
  • Our service is to be grounded and rooted in love (Ephesians 3:17)

Pray that we each will walk worthy of the calling with which we were called!

Ambassadors of Christ

Today's devotional speaks of being ambassadors of Christ. That's exactly what each of us is called to do during this 40 Days for Life campaign -- and I am so gratified to see how many of you are taking this call to heart. But it isn't always easy. More than in any previous campaign, there is strong opposition to what you are and others are doing on the sidewalks of 212 cities. And in a couple of minutes, I'm going to ask you to watch a 38-second video that shows the challenge -- and the proper response to that challenge that demonstrates to the whole world exactly what sets 40 Days for Life apart.

Carol Marie in Reno, Nevada reports that 40 Days for Life vigil participants often have to deal with "tirades, nasty comments and empty threats" from the abortionist, who clearly wishes the prayer presence outside his offices would go away. The people praying at the vigil do not respond; they just keep praying. "I am happy to learn that we continue to demonstrate that we are there to share the love of Christ with those who come to the abortion site," Carol Marie said, "regardless of their reason for being there, regardless of the role they are playing in this tragedy."

Paul in Lake Jackson, Texas said 40 Days for Life vigil participants there had a most challenging time recently. "We were visited by an angry protester that spent 45 minutes shouting at us and trying to argue with us right in front of our vigil space," he said. "By the grace of God, we were cool headed and tried not to engage her in any conversation but she was very persistent. It got to the point where one of the vigil participants had to call the police. "The officer that spent some time with the woman and told us afterward she wouldn't be back," Paul said. Even the mayor came later to offer his support. "Through it all we kept praying."

Clair in Kalamazoo, Michigan notes that a water bottle and a nearly-empty drink can were thrown at 40 Days for Life vigil participants from passing vehicles. Thankfully, no one was hurt. "The individuals who threw these items would like it very much if we stopped coming out," she said. But Kalamazoo is committed to press on with their 40 Days for Life campaign. The group did file a police report, and the officers promised to help. "They have told us there will be more patrols going past the Planed Parenthood facility," said Clair.

A slight increase in the incidents of taunting and heckling have been reported, as "pro-choice" bloggers are furiously attempting to rally abortion advocates to go out to abortion centers and demonstrate against the 40 Days for Life prayer vigils.

The 38-second video I'd like you to watch is one that I discovered on YouTube. It was recorded outside Dr. Emily's Women's Health Center in The Bronx, New York -- one of the country's busiest abortion facilities, that ends the lives of thousands of children yearly.

You'll see a small 40 Days for Life group, including several Catholic nuns, standing in a circle praying peacefully and quietly. You won't see the abortion demonstrators, but you'll certainly hear them as they angrily chant slogans in an attempt to drown out the vigil participants' prayers.

http://40daysforlife.com/blog/?p=305

This, in a 38-second nutshell, is what 40 Days for Life is all about. We stand up for those who have no voice, in a world that doesn't want to listen, where people yell in an effort to drown out the truth.

But never forget -- Jesus told us to expect this: "Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven" (Matthew 5:11-12). 40 Days for Life gives us the opportunity to live that out in a unique way. And, if we aren't being persecuted for our faith at times -- are we really living out the fullness of the gospel?

Thank you for being prayerful and peaceful ... and for living the gospel.

Signs of Hope – Bri, Michael & Julianna Express Their Gratitude

She was 17 years old, she’d already had an abortion.   Now she and her new boyfriend thought they might be pregnant.   When it was confirmed, his father was quick to make an appointment for them at the local abortion site. Having already been through this ordeal, she was uncertain that she was willing to once again see her own baby die.   These two young people decided to simply have an ultra-sound and then take time to consider their decision, but when they left the abortion site, they saw a man who looked like he was certainly a prophet, and when her eyes fell on the large, bold word “GOD” that was on his sign, she knew for certain that she was going to give this child life.

That was April 29, 2008, and the 40 Days for Life campaign had ended.   But Richard had not gone home, he had not stopped coming to the sidewalk to pray for the children who continued to lose their lives at the abortion site.   But even though his presence had made a difference, he knew nothing about the impact he’d made on this young family to be.   And despite the loneliness of his effort, he continued to stay committed to the babies.   For Richard, it’s all about the babies.

He has even endured being arrested on charges of Destruction of Property, Permanent Damage for allegedly writing on the painted metal fence that fronts the property of the West End Abortion Site, located at 5915 Tyrone Rd. in Reno.   Having pleaded no contest, he is now under a one year probation that prohibits him from standing within 10 feet of the driveway entrance to the property, and yet even with this, Richard has continued to return to Pray to End Abortion.   He comes regardless of the weather, at least 5 days per week, and typically twice a day, as the women enter the facility.

A couple of weeks ago, Don, who had been driving past Richard and Tony, who has been standing with Richard since his court sentence was handed down, finally knew what he needed to do to support these men.   He went and purchased four 8 foot long by 2 foot high signs that say, successively “Abortion”, “Stops A”, “Beating”, and “Heart” and then gave them to Richard and Tony to display daily for the passing cars to read.   At the time, Richard and Tony thought it couldn’t get much better than this.

And then this week, the news came that Richard had saved the life of a child who yesterday celebrated her 9 month birthday.   Richard first learned of the events of April 2008 through a phone call placed by Merrie, Tony’s daughter, who was at the sidewalk when this young, now married, couple approached, looking for Richard.   Again, it was thought, how could it get any better, this was as good as it gets.   But on Friday morning, Bri, Michael and Julianna showed up at the sidewalk to personally thank Richard for being there, for helping to save Julianna’s life when she was unable to speak for herself.

They brought with them a beautiful, large sign they had made that shows a photo of Julianna and the words “Julianna 1/2/09, God’s Gift.  We saved her… Can you save yours?”   To see Richard standing with this wonderful sign, go to: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/ConstantVigil.

What Did You Learn About Yourself While At the Sidewalk?

During their time at the sidewalk, many find that they come to better appreciate the pain of loss suffered by those who have made the decision to abort and they find a new sense of compassion for those who have made this terrible decision.   Others have a profound sense of the loss of potential represented by the children who will never live to contribute to society.   Still others find that they have a deep desire to see those who participate in abortion be brought to know, love and serve Our Lord, Jesus Christ.   What do you feel when you stand in prayer?   To register for the hours when you’ll be at the sidewalk, go to: http://www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe   I thank you in advance for your support.

Send your impressions of your time at the sidewalk to renotahoe@40DaysforLife.com.

40 Days through Scripture

Day 11: Luke 10 – 13 (including:  Luke 11:5-8 )
And he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him’ and he says in reply from within, “Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed.   I cannot get up to give you anything.’   I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence.”

Scripture assures us that the persistence of our prayers will lead to them being answered.   Join us, be persistent.

I am 71% – I Oppose Taxpayer Funding of Abortion

[Operation Rescue, Washington DC] – On Friday, October 2, 2009, the Christian Defense Coalition and other pro-life groups raised a 100 foot image of the number 71 on the west lawn of the White House to remind Congress that, according to a recent Zogby Poll, 71% of Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortion in the proposed health care reform package.

In support of this effort, Operation Rescue is launching the “I AM 71” Project. We are asking Americans to take a digital photo of them holding a paper with the number 71 and send it to Operation Rescue. These photos will be posted on the Internet and compiled and sent to members of Congress and President Obama.   The Complete Story   To submit your photos, send them to: photos@operationrescue.org.

National Campaign Daily Intention

Let us affirm the unborn children by our language.

Anyone who says to his brother, “Raca,” is answerable to the Sanhedrin…anyone who says, “You fool!” will be in danger of the fire of hell. — Matthew 5:22

Before the schoolyard bully beats up his victim, he calls him names. This is a way to dehumanize the victim, and therefore make it easier to justify at tacking him. In this verse from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says that using dehumanizing language is sinful. “Raca” was an Aramaic term of contempt. The respect and love we are called to have for other human lives is not limited to action alone; it also has to manifest itself in language. Professor William Brennan, in his book Dehumanizing the Vulnerable: When Word Games Take Lives, traces the de-humanizing language used to oppress various groups of people in history, such as our African-American brothers and sisters, or our Jewish brothers and sisters in the Holocaust.

He then shows that the same kind of dehumanizing language is used against the unborn, who have been called “parasites,” “tissue,” and “medical waste,” among other things. What are we to do instead? We are to affirm one another, including the un‐born, with ennobling language that inspires respect and love. The unborn are precious children, they are our brothers and sisters, they are the image of God. Let us multiply the language of affirmation, as we hasten to the day of their protection!

Defending the Truth

Yesterday I visited the Toledo, Ohio 40 Days for Life campaign and in a few hours I'll be jumping on an airplane to Jacksonville, Florida, where I'll be joining the 40 Days for Life volunteers on the streets as part of their vigil. It always amazes me to see so many people "speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves." While running across the country visiting 40 Days for Life locations, I have to admit that I keep thinking about the banner at the Planned Parenthood abortion center in St. Louis that I told you about earlier this week -- the one that says "defend the truth." I keep waiting for the day when everyone knows the truth and there's no one left to defend what goes on at Planned Parenthood and hundreds of other abortion centers in North America and throughout the world.

The good news is that more people are learning the truth -- thanks to you!

In Riverside, California, people who were praying at the 40 Days for Life vigil watched as a young woman entered the Planned Parenthood abortion center. A couple of hours later, she came out. A pastor who was praying with the group met her and asked if she needed anything. She told him she had come for an abortion, but changed her mind. The Planned Parenthood staff told her they would give her a shot that would stop her baby's heart. She said, "WHAT?" The young woman knew right away she could not go through with the abortion, so she got up and left. In her heart, she knew the truth.

In Kalispell, Montana, one of the vigil participants had a chance to talk with a man whose company provided contract services for All Families Healthcare. It was news to this man that All Families Healthcare was in the abortion business. He said he would have never signed a contract with the clinic if he had known the truth. He thanked the people praying for taking part in 40 Days for Life -- and assured them that he would not be renewing his contract with the clinic.

The reality of abortion in most communities is that many people are simply unaware that it's going on in their city. "Abortion" is somebody else's problem -- or a political issue, perhaps. It doesn't seem real. People seem to act like it's something that involves people you don't know and places you've never been. But of course, that isn't the truth. That's one of the reasons why community outreach is a key component of 40 Days for Life.

In Halifax, Nova Scotia, the 40 Days for Life team went door-to-door to let people in their city know about the campaign -- and to ask them to pray. "Most people are a little surprised at such a request," said Julie. "And most are polite -- probably thinking that if they are nice, we will leave quickly." The volunteers offer a fact sheet about 40 Days for Life that also includes information about abortion that people generally do not know. "This went much better than I anticipated," she said. "No one I met had even heard of the vigil or noticed it, so this really is a way to raise community awareness of the prayer vigil and to bring the neglected issue of abortion before the public."

The truth will ALWAYS triumph over the big lie of abortion. So let's spread more of the truth!

Local Campaign News

Sidewalk Covered in Prayer Elicits Many Conversations

One of the unexpected benefits of having so many people standing in prayer, and most days, there have been many people standing at the sidewalk in prayer through-out the day, is that it piques peoples curiosity and they stop to ask questions. The other day Sr. Carol was at the sidewalk in her habit and people took notice.

I also received word from Dave who was at the sidewalk and had a young man come by walking his dog and shaking his head. Uncertain what was the cause of this man’s shaking head, Dave approached him for clarification and asked if he had any questions. “I can't wait until all you people die off” Dave was told. He asked him to repeat himself, uncertain that he’d heard correctly. Sadly, he had. What ensued was a conversation that at points resulted in this young man’s lip beginning to quiver, before he managed to again focus his anger against those who attempted to gently share the truth. During the course of the conversation, several of the other prayer volunteers came and joined the conversation, which at points became heated. Dave prays that next time he will do a better job of maintaining his composure but I pray that by simply being there to engage in a discussion on the topic, and by having the logic of truth on our side, that this young man will be ready to consider the points raised in the conversation they had at the sidewalk.

If you’re encountering a difficult person while at the sidewalk, may I ask that you remember the primary purpose of our time there, and that is to pray. Therefore, ask God for the grace to remain in prayer while you are listening to a person rant. Remember that anger frequently masks pain, and that by simply raising the subject of abortion, by merely mentioning the word, we are forcing people to confront their own decisions, decisions they may be having difficulty living with, children they may be refusing to admit they miss, because they know they are the reason these children are not living, and the knowledge of this truth is too difficult to bear. It is therefore easier, until they are forced to face the weakness of their own arguments in support of their decision, to blame their pain on those of us who stand to honor the children they fear acknowledging.

You Could Be Exactly the Person Needed to Fill the Sidewalk

Your hour could be the difference needed to fill the sidewalk with uninterrupted prayer today and tomorrow. Won’t you come and pray? To register for the hours when you’ll be at the sidewalk, go to: http://www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe I thank you in advance for your support.

Send your impressions of your time at the sidewalk to renotahoe@40DaysforLife.com.

Adopt A Day Remains the Most Efficient Way to Grow the Campaign

Did you know that the Adopt-A-Day program is one of the surest ways we have to fill the sidewalk at the abortion site with constant prayer? And this prayer is having an effect. People are noticing, the abortionist is having to reflect on what he’s doing for a living, the women entering the abortion site are having to consider the impact of their decision to abort. Help us fill the schedule, bring Adopt-A-Day to your church.

Please approach your pastor and ask to make announcements at church this weekend, inviting others to come and Pray to End Abortion. For further support on how to coordinate adopting a day, go to: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/AdoptaDay or to get the procedure in PDF format, go to: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/AdoptaDay.pdf.

40 Days through Scripture

Day 10: Luke 5 – 9 (including: Luke 6:27-36)
But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic. Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount. But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Remember that while we may not like what is being done to the babies at the abortion site nor do we enjoy it when we have sprinklers turned on us, or we are serenaded with George Carlin, we are there to love those who do not yet appreciate the Love of Christ, we are there to bless them and pray for them. We want to offer love and support to the women and if a clinic worker is looking for an alternate job, we want to be prepared to go out of our way to help them change careers. This is how we can give witness to the Love of Christ when we gather at the sidewalk.

Last night, Thursday, the Reno Crisis Pregnancy Center held a banquet dinner highlighting Sydna Masse of Ramah International who is so impressed with the work they’re doing locally that she offered to speak at their banquet for free. Sydna came all the way from Englewood Florida to share her testimony of healing through the forgiveness of Christ from the pain she has suffered after an abortion she had as a young woman. After working with Focus on the Family for several years, she launched out onto her own and founded Ramah International to reach out to Post Abortive Women.

National Campaign Daily Intention

May we grow in joy, knowing we serve a living God.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.—John 1:14

The Word of God came to us in human form in Jesus Christ. Every time I con‐template this fact I get chills! And I think it is something that we, as Christians, tend to gloss over. I can only imagine how the first disciples felt when they were looking into the eyes of the one and only Almighty God who created them. The first disciples developed a close relationship with Him as they daily walked and talked with Him. They ate with Him, prayed with Him and rested when He rested.

As they listened to the Word of God, who was and is Jesus, they believed and “beheld His glory.” Today, this is something we can still do because we serve a living God. Re‐member, Jesus died on the cross but rose from the dead in victory! Jesus is every bit as real and alive for all of us as He was to the first disciples. He wants us to develop a close relationship with Him in the very same way. Jesus wants us to know Him personally. He wants us to walk with Him and talk with Him on a daily basis.

National Campaign News

It’s Been a Most Incredible Week!

I'll have to admit it -- going out to stand and pray in front of an abortion facility is not exactly an appealing proposition. It isn't easy, especially if it's something you've never done before. The first time I went to pray outside an abortion facility I was very worried about what could happen and who might see me there. But please trust me; when you make the commitment, God will provide every ounce of grace that you'll need to answer His call.

We've gotten notes from people who had never taken part in 40 Days for Life until this past week. Hopefully, these notes will encourage you to step out in faith if you have not yet signed up for a time to pray at the abortion center.

"I did my first hour Friday night at 10 as part of my church's adopted day. I could sense such evil," wrote one first-timer. "It was powerful to pray there for the end to abortion and the conversion of the doctor."

Another first-time participant writes, "This issue has been close to my heart for a long time, but to be honest, participating in the vigil Friday has put this front and center in my heart now."

"I wish there was a way I could bottle the experience and send a copy to each of you so you could experience it fully right from the comfort of your living room, but this is something you'll simply need to experience for yourself," said Carol Marie of the 40 Days for Life campaign in the Reno/Tahoe area of Nevada and California. "I believe that when we go to the sidewalk and pray to end abortion we each are given a special grace so that we can better address the issue," she added. "Because we are each called to play our own particular role in this effort, that grace varies from person to person, and thus the experience also differs. How is God calling you to help? What role are you meant to play?"

Pamela is another person who had never taken part in 40 Days for Life -- or even participated in any visible pro-life activities -- until this campaign. "I have to tell you," she said, "it was an eye opening and powerful experience." She prayed that God would give her courage. "I have to admit that I was scared," she said. "The knowledge that I could potentially watch a woman walk into a facility carrying a baby and watch her come out without one brought me to tears." Pamela arrived late -- and nervous. "I felt an overwhelming need to pray; and there in the grass I wept and prayed for the men and women who entered the facility to work and receive services." She prayed for everything she could possibly think of that God could offer these people to change their hearts and minds. "What I observed this morning was a demonstration of grace and truth," she said. "If anyone feels the same hesitation and uncertainty I did, please consider coming to the event with another group or a group of friends. I am certain you will be blessed and awakened by the experience."

Brian Westbrook of the St. Louis 40 Days for Life campaign said if people like Pamela can find the courage to stand for Life on the sidewalk, "then so can you. We will not end abortion by sitting at home," he said, "but we must proclaim the truth from our roof tops and on the street corners."

Ready to give it a try?   Visit the list of all 212 communities participating in this 40 Days for Life:

Calendar Manager - One of our valiant Calendar Managers has had to step back from the commitment and we’re looking for someone to step up and fill the role.   Would you be willing to assist in ensuring that we have volunteers to fill the sidewalk for one day of the week for the remainder of the campaign?  This would entail making phone calls to volunteers who have already been to the sidewalk, as well as attempting to find churches willing to Adopt a Day.   The calendar manager also assists volunteers and Church Coordinators to enter their volunteer hours onto our on-line schedule.   This role is significant to the campaign and if you are willing to make phone calls, your contribution can make a significant difference.

You Are Needed at the Sidewalk

While we are each created in the image and likeness of God, we are also each created unique, one from the other.   This means that your prayers are uniquely heard at the throne of God.   Won’t you please bring your unique prayers to the sidewalk, as we Pray to End Abortion?   To register for the hours when you’ll be at the sidewalk, go to: http://www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe  I thank you in advance for your support.

Send your impressions of your time at the sidewalk to renotahoe@40DaysforLife.com.

Adopt A Day the Most Efficient Way to Grow the Campaign

Day 9: Luke 1 – 4 (including:  Luke 4:38-39)
After he left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon.   Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her.   He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her.   She got up immediately and waited on them.

National Campaign Daily Intention

May the spirit and example of the Good Samaritan fill the hearts and minds of all our citizens.

Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. “A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. “So, too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. “But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the ands of robbers?”

The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”—Luke 10:30-37

Here Jesus commands us to show mercy to the victims of the culture of violence and death. But why did the priest and Levite fail to show mercy? Perhaps they feared that the robbers were hiding just around the next corner to attack them. They asked them‐selves, “If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?” The Samaritan, however, reversed the question, and asked, “If I don’t stop to help this man, what will happen to him?” In working to save the unborn, let’s not worry about what will happen to us if we act; let’s worry about what will happen to the unborn if we don’t.

National Campaign News

It’s Been a Most Incredible Week!

Well, here we are! The first week of the fall 40 Days for Life campaign is complete. Since it's been a most incredible week, I'd like to share some "most incredible" happenings, in categories large and small.

Weather-wise, we've seen a bit of everything – warm in the south, cool in the north, a lot of rain in the east. But clearly, the honor for Most Incredible Weather Report goes to Colorado Springs for Day 1 of the campaign.

"Colorado Springs woke up this morning to a howling wind," Michele told me. "I looked outside and there was blowing snow." Snow! The wind died down and the snow stopped, but it was still pretty cold. But more than 60 people showed up -- in winter coats, hats and mittens -- for the opening event of the 40 Days for Life campaign. "No," Michele said, "the cold won't keep us away!"

We've seen tons of great pictures from many local efforts, but the Most Incredible Picture of a 40 Days for Life Banner Hanging from a Church Bell Tower is definitely from Pensacola, Florida, where Sacred Heart Cathedral's very tall banner features the 40 Days for Life logo and a scripture verse, John 10:10 – "I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly." Go here to see the banner on the bell tower: http://40daysforlife.com/blog/?p=292

We also have photographic evidence for the Most Incredible Falsehood from Planned Parenthood – the banner hanging from the walls of an abortion center in St. Louis with the message, "Defend the truth." Click here to see the abortion center's banner: http://40daysforlife.com/blog/?p=292

Defending the truth? That's what YOU are doing! Planned Parenthood is the nation's largest abortion chain and despite the constant claim that Planned Parenthood somehow "reduces abortions," this organization's latest annual report shows a record total of 305,310 abortions for the previous year -- numbers that continue to go up. That's indefensible.

Local campaigns had many good TV news reports thus far (you can check them out through the links on our news page at http://40daysforlife.com/news.cfm )

But I thought the Most Incredible TV News Report came from WFMZ-TV, whose report on 40 Days for Life in Phillipsburg, New Jersey gives a fair, objective view of the campaign -- and an interesting look at those who "defend" the abortion business. See the video report here (note that there's a commercial before the news story begins), and please pray for the lone "pro-choice" supporter. You'll see what I mean: http://40daysforlife.com/blog/?p=292

While mentioning incredible things, an incredible pro-life event that takes place during this fall's 40 Days for Life is the annual Life Chain. It's happening this Sunday, October 4. People will line the sidewalks in communities across North America to stand up for life. You can find out much more at: http://nationallifechain.org

If you've never taken a public stand for an end to abortion, please consider this invitation. It will give you a first taste for pro-life activity that will whet your appetite for doing even more – like taking part in the nearest 40 Days for Life vigil, for instance! ;-)

Without a doubt, however, even in a most eventful week of lives saved, hearts consoled and prayers answered, my Most Incredible Inspiration is -- YOU! YOU are the ones who answer God's call to speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves. It has been genuinely amazing to watch you in action. And I can't wait to see what happens these next 33 days!

Local Campaign News

The Winds of Change Blew in Reno

Apparently, Dr. Stutes didn’t have a peaceful day of rest on Tuesday, as several prayer volunteers commented on seeing him at the abortion site today. One volunteer observed him, along with a clinic worker, fighting to better anchor down the large signs he has placed outside the facility, as the winds were buffeting it about. This person commented on how the struggle they were having against the strong winds reminded them of how the winds are used in Scripture as a symbol of the power of the Holy Spirit, and here were Dr. Stutes and his worker, battling against the winds, which blew their signs around. Last year, these large signs were completely blown from the site by the strong, cleansing winds. What will be seen when the light of day again shines on the sidewalk?

I was most pleased to learn that among those who shared their experiences with me, that they did not respond in kind to his several tirades of nasty comments and empty threats. I am happy to learn that we continue to demonstrate that we are there to share the love of Christ with those who come to the abortion site, regardless of their reason for being there, regardless of the role they are playing in this tragedy.

Another prayer volunteer told me that while at the sidewalk she and another were approached by a woman who drove up to ask why they were there. Apparently Rachel was able to provide what this observer considered to be a beautiful defense of life, which may have been one of the first times this woman who approached with her questions had ever heard a well articulated defense for why abortion is never a valid option. Thank you Rachel, and thank you Therese who last year offered to her church an excellent program on the reasons that abortion can not be defended by a Christian. Rachel was one of the many participants in this workshop from whom we are now seeing good fruit.

It was also reported that someone may have left a religious candle at the abortion site, perhaps having placed it on the fence or one of the blue boxes within the abortion site property. This was conjectured by one of those reporting to me the events of their time at the sidewalk, and a tirade of Dr. Stutes as he took pictures of the candle (which may have been on the ground near the speaker box) and shouted various things to those who had come to pray in peace. I’m uncertain if the candle was or wasn’t placed on the fence or speaker box, but either way, I’d like to offer this word of caution. If you place anything on the fence, that may constitute trespass and we must NOT trespass upon the private property of the abortion site. It is even more a case of trespass if one were to reach into the site to place something on one of the blue speaker boxes. Please, do not do anything while you are there that could put you in a position that could result in an arrest or other legal action. Assume that the cameras are always functional and that they will be watching every minute of the tape, 24 hours long.

The abortionist has already demonstrated his willingness (perhaps even desire) to prosecute us for any transgression. We do not want to provide him with the opportunity to do so. Also, if it was in fact a candle, this is likely to elicit an especially strong response, as it is my understanding that while at the previous abortion site location on Mill Street, the facility was the object of an attack by a firebomb. This occurred more than 15 years ago while there were a large number of people present, when the approach was to protest, rather than pray. The majority of those present recognized one another from their time spent together at the sidewalk, but no-one recognized the individual who came, threw the firebomb and then immediately left. There has been some conjecture that this person was never associated with the Pro-Life movement, but it has never been proven one way or the other.

I ask that we please not repeat such behavior under our watch! And please, do not place anything within the property, which includes on top of the fence.

If you approach the site and someone has placed something on the fence, if the person responsible is present, please ask them to remove it, so as to reduce the likelihood of anyone facing legal troubles. At the same time, if you didn’t place it there, and don’t know who did, I would recommend not touching anything, as it is on private property. If there is a lit candle, it might be prudent to blow it out, so as to minimize the slight possibility of any fire hazard (although his plantings and building materials have reduced the likelihood of this being a problem).

Large votive candles, or hand held candles that are not placed on private property and are not left unattended should not present a problem and can offer spiritual benefits, so they are not discouraged. Use them in prayer, use them as a symbol of the light we come to represent. Remember that we come to the sidewalk to take back this dark place in our community, to shed light on the darkness, the true light, the light of Christ.

All are welcome, we all have the power of prayer at our disposal, no one is too young or too old to pray to the Almighty, All Loving, All Merciful God. For we know that this effort will only be won when we surrender it to God, who can accomplish all things.

Send your impressions of your time at the sidewalk to renotahoe@40DaysforLife.com.

You Are Needed at the Sidewalk

Today the sidewalk needs your prayers. No, not that other person reading this across town, YOU! If you absolutely can’t make it due to distance or other commitments, please cover the sidewalk, the abortion site, the abortionist, the women who are contemplating an abortion later this week, cover them all with your prayers. Cover the volunteers involved in this effort, those who help in prayer, those who are taking an active role in coordinating the effort, the families of all who are involved in this effort. Please cover them all with your prayer. If you can make it to the sidewalk, please register via our website, and be certain to sign a Statement of Peace before you go out! To register for the hours when you’ll be at the sidewalk, go to: http://www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe I thank you in advance for your support.

Please Bring Adopt A Day to Your Church

Please help us to efficiently cover the sidewalk in prayer! If I told you that by giving a few days of your time that you could cure a friend of deadly cancer, would you? If I told you that by skipping your plans for the weekend, you could give someone life, would you? I believe that everyone reading this would answer with a resounding yes! Who among us wouldn’t jump at the chance to save a loved one? I tell you, that our prayers are every bit as powerful as just that, they are saving lives. If you put in the time to arrange an Adopt a Day for your church, you can play a role in seeing an end to abortion in our community. The number of lives that will be spared as a result could be countless. Isn’t this worth the inconvenience of rearranging a few things on your calendar of events?

Please approach your pastor and ask to make announcements at church this weekend, inviting others to come and Pray to End Abortion. For further support on how to coordinate adopting a day, go to: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/AdoptaDay or to get the procedure in PDF format, go to: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/AdoptaDay.pdf.

40 Days through Scripture

Day 8: Mark 12 – 16v(including: Mark 13:32-37)
“But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. It is like a man traveling abroad. He leaves home and places his servants in charge, each with his work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch. Watch, therefore; you do not know when the lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all: ‘Watch!’ “

If he were to come to you today, if this were your last day on earth, would you be satisfied with how you spent it? Did you use today to give Glory and Honor to God? Did you protect the innocent, help the downtrodden?

[Americans United for Life, REVISED: 09.28.09] No amendments pertaining to life issues received a vote on Friday. The Senate is not in Session today. On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee will likely consider three pro-life amendments filed by Senator Orrin Hatch (UT). While the Committee accepted one pro-life modification to the bill last week as part of a package of amendments – the federal government cannot mandate abortion in the “essential benefits package” that private insurers must provide to participate in the system – there are still several problems with the Bill. . Read the Entire Story

I received an email from Eric Scheidler today referring me to this article and I’d like to encourage you to follow his lead and call Senator Ensign and all the other Finance Committee members, requesting that they take action to remove abortion from Health Care Reform.

We’ve got their attention, now is the time to capitalize on that by being heard. We’ve even got the attention of Planned Parenthood, who sent out two missives today, asking for money so that they can counter us as Cecile Richard says “It's clear that months of relentless pressure by a small, vocal bunch of anti-choice extremists who will stop at nothing to get rid of a woman's right to choose — even if it means that millions upon millions of women, men, and children would remain uninsured — is working.” But let’s not sit back, taking her word that we’re making headway through the efforts of others. Let’s each and every one of us pick-up the phone and let these legislators know that now is the time when we say:

“Enough is Enough, not with my tax dollars, not with my insurance premiums, not now, not ever, I will not pay for abortion! Please support the Hatch Amendments.”

National Campaign Daily Intention

May we have a heart and a zeal to save the poor and release the oppressed.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed. —Luke 4:1819

This passage is a very familiar one. It has been preached on many occasions, even made popular in books and songs. Though the quote is about Jesus, all Christians take this commission seriously as a directive on how to reach the world with the gospel. We, like our Savior, are to bring the good news to the poor, the broken hearted, those in captivity, those who cannot see, and the oppressed. The commission given to us in this passage is clearly a charge to care for those for whom God cares the most. I wonder though, whom do we look for to be touched by the Holy Spirit as we go out into the world? Who are the poor, if not those unborn children who have been abandoned by their parents before they ever leave the womb? Who are the broken hearted, if not those unborn children whose only example of love is having their mother take them to an abortion clinic to be destroyed, or the mother of a child who has been deceived by everyone around her into believing that what she is doing is best for her and her child? Who are the captives, if not those unborn children who are bound over to death by the “choice” of abortion? Who is more blind than an unborn child in the darkness of a womb that has become a waiting room for their death? And who is more oppressed than those unborn children whose oppression has been legitimized by their government, their church and even their family and loved ones.

Fathers Have No Say When it Comes to their Unborn Children

People participating in the 40 Days for Life vigil watched as a young man who appeared to be in tears walked into Planned Parenthood with his girlfriend and her mother. When they left some time later, he was most certainly crying—and obviously quite upset.

I'll let one of the prayer vigil participants pick up the story...

I watched him head down the street, alternating between wiping the tears from his face and punching the buildings in anger and frustration as he passed them. Eventually he headed back toward the parking lot. As he approached, I went to him first. All I could think to say was that I was so very sorry for his loss. He began to cry again. Then a truck pulled up leaving the parking lot with his girlfriend and her mother inside. The girl's mother yelled at him to get in and cursed him as he opened the door. He had one foot inside, then stepped back out and closed the door. As she drove away he promptly sat down on the curb and cried like a baby. Three of us sat down beside him -- all men -- and cried with him.

Eventually, he began to talk. He was probably in his very early twenties. He told us that his girlfriend did not want to keep the child because she feared they would not be able to provide for him. He asked her how she could destroy a life based on a hunch. He told her this child had a heartbeat and a soul and deserved to live. He even tried to convince her to, at the very least, put the child up for adoption. I was struck by the fact that this young man knew all this simply because his heart told him it was true. He was wise well beyond his years and he was hurting terribly. I was struck by the clear reality that fathers have so little to do with whether their own children live or die. I also couldn't help but notice that despite the high volume of Planned Parenthood volunteers around, none of them approached him. Before I left him, he stood up to hug me. All I could tell him was what I truly believed -- that today, his child knows that his/her father fought for it. That to his child, he is a hero and that someday he would know that also.

Please pray for this young man and others like him. The tragedy of abortion is real and happening everyday. No one knows that better than he. I sincerely hope this young man comes to embrace the exceptional advice he was given; but that will most certainly take time. I cannot even begin to imagine the anguish.

This is a first-person account of what abortion does to fathers. Who knows how many others have walked in his shoes, as there are more than a million abortions every year -- and more than 50 million since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that opened the floodgates to abortion on demand.

Let's pray even harder!

Impressions of the Sidewalk from Three Prayer Volunteers

Today the sidewalk was covered in prayer by the St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral parish, as coordinated by Charles, who spent the entire day there, with clipboard in hand. Throughout the day there were on average 3 people standing to Pray to End Abortion. Charles was impressed most by the fellowship of the believers who stepped out of their comfort zone to be at the sidewalk to pray. Because the abortion site is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, there were no saves to report, but neither were there any killings, so it has been a good day for the unborn babies of Reno.

Katie, who has taken on the responsibility of filling the calendar on Mondays through-out the campaign, reported that she observed people at the sidewalk from Lucy who is only 3 years old, to several seniors, who came to pray. She was also impressed that this is something where we can leave aside our denominational, church affiliation differences as we come together to Pray to End Abortion. She knows this to be true for having stood in prayer with James who attends the Reno Christian Fellowship, while she attends St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Mary, who helped Charles fill the schedule today, reported that while she was praying with Pam & Joe a young man drove up, parked his car and came over to them, asking what they were doing. When they explained that they were there to Pray to End Abortion, he told them that he simply disagreed with what they were doing, and that he felt it wasn’t right for them to stand there in judgment of the women to come to the abortion site. “Certainly, you can’t know what her situation is, what if she’s been raped?” he reasoned. “So, should the innocent child have to pay with death for the crime of his father”, they posited back to him? The conversation continued on in a cordial manner and in the end it’s uncertain if he was convinced, but at least he was given the opportunity to consider that perhaps his relativistic values don’t hold up to close scrutiny. Certainly he hasn’t previously had the opportunity to discuss the subject with someone who can clearly and honestly defend the position that life is worth protecting from the moment of conception. And if nothing else, it’s good that this young man has gone away thinking. Who knows where the Lord will take this encounter.

Time to Head to the Sidewalk for an Hour

Today the sidewalk needs your prayers. No, not that other person reading this across town, you.

Adopt A Day at the Sidewalk

Day 7: Mark 7 – 6 (including: Mark 8:34-38 )
He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? What could one give in exchange for his life? Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless and sinful generation the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

Have you denied yourself and picked up your cross today? Come to the sidewalk, stand at the foot of the cross, be there for the innocents as they leave the world.

Wash. College Agrees to End Discrimination against Pro-Life Students

[LifeSiteNews.com SPOKANE, WA, September 28, 2009] - Community Colleges of Spokane and Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) officials agreed to a court order Thursday that settles a lawsuit filed after they attempted to silence the pro-life message of a student group.

SFCC officials threatened student Beth Sheeran and other members of a Christian student group with disciplinary measures, including expulsion, if they chose to hold a pro-life event on campus. The information Sheeran and the others were sharing with fellow students was deemed "discriminatory" by the college since it did not include a pro-abortion viewpoint.

The agreed-upon order eliminates or revises the problematic policies and programs that led to the unfair treatment of the student organization. To Read the Entire Story

Can’t Handle the Truth, Only One Choice for Pro-Choice

After being encouraged to abort her child, which she had been told was merely a clump of cells, a pregnant mother departs the abortion site and opts to have a free ultra-sound being offered nearby. What she finds so shocks her that she insists that the members of the life affirming clinic that offered her the opportunity to see her unborn baby bring pictures, with her written permission, to the escorts at the clinic where she was just deceived. Rather than a clump of cells, her child is a well developed person, with fully defined features growing within her. This is not what she had been led to believe, and if she had accepted their advice, believing what she was being told, her child would be dead and at some point she would have come to know the truth, but by then it would be too late for her child. Who really cares about women, who is really interested in providing the truth, who really wants to come forward to dialogue? Watch
