Please Pray for the 5-10 Women who Appear to have had Abortions Today

Please pray for the women who entered the Reno abortion site today.   Dr. Stutes arrived for work shortly after 7 am, and was seen leaving the property at approximately 3:50 pm.  While he was there between 5 and 10 women entered the site, presumably for abortions, although we now realize that each woman typically visits at least twice to complete an abortion.   Therefore, let us pray that at least some of these women were on an initial visit and that our prayers will soften their hearts such that they choose to give life to their children.

We have a list of local pregnancy resources that we are able to offer them.   If you haven’t seen this handout, please download a copy from our website.   There is a link to it located on the team page, or you can go there directly at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/resources.   These resources provide the women with the opportunity to fully explore their choices before the go down a dead end.

If you plan to go to the sidewalk to pray and/or sidewalk counsel, please sign our Statement of Peace, located at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/statementofpeace.    Those who participate in 40 Days for Life are asked to commit to being peaceful, prayerful and lawful while we are at the sidewalk.

Please Remember to Stay on the Sidewalk or Across the Street

Just a quick reminder that we don’t want to be in the street when we come to pray.   Please stay either on the sidewalk or on the dirt across the street when you come to pray.   We also are not allowed to block vehicles entering or exiting the driveway of the abortion site, nor can we block pedestrians on the sidewalk.   Thank you for your continued cooperation.   If you are asked to move by a police officer, please comply immediately and ask for his name and badge number.   We’d like to keep track of any encounters between those who are volunteering at the sidewalk and the Reno Police department, so please email us at 40DaysforLifeRenoTahoe@gmail.com or call us at 530-412-1573.

Have You Encountered Disturbing the Peace or a Noise Nuisance?

Have you been to the sidewalk and been subjected to a noise nuisance while there?   Did you know that the City of Reno has a code that specifically addresses disturbing the peace and public nuisances?

Sec. 8.12.020. - Disturbing the peace.

It is unlawful for any person to commit a breach of the peace. Such breach shall consist of:

  1. Fighting or challenging to fight; or
  2. Conduct or words calculated to provoke violence or a violation of the law by the person to whom the conduct or words are addressed; or
  3. Making annoying, lewd, malicious or threatening telephone calls; or
  4. Willfully and unreasonably subjecting a person or neighborhood to any noise which is likely to disturb the peace of persons of reasonable and ordinary sensibilities.

(Code 1966, § 11.12.090; Ord. No. 5047, § 1, 9-28-99; Ord. No. 5387, § 1, 11-5-02)

And further on in the code regarding Nuisances:

Nuisance or nuisance activity. That which is injurious to health, or injurious, indecent and offensive to the senses, or an obstruction to the free use of property so as to interfere with the comfortable enjoyment of life or property, or is against the interest of public morals, decency, safety, peace and order, including, but not limited to, an attractive nuisance, a nuisance per se, criminal activity, the presence of debris, litter, graffiti, garbage, rubble, abandoned, unregistered or junk vehicles or junk appliances, curfew violations, or any other activity, behavior or conduct defined by the council or Nevada Revised Statutes to constitute a public nuisance. Nuisance or nuisance activity includes unreasonably creating, allowing, or engaging in any activity, conduct or use of property that subjects a person or neighborhood to noise which is likely to disturb the peace of persons of reasonable and ordinary sensibilities. [Reference NRS 268; NRS 268.412; 1997]

Sec. 8.22.035. - Nuisances per se defined.

Any of the following conditions are a nuisance per se as constituting conditions which annoy, injure or endanger the safety, health or comfort of any considerable number of persons:

(1)     An unsafe or dangerous building; …

(25)   Any other condition which creates a blight to adjoining property, the neighborhood or the city, or a nuisance, health, safety or fire hazard identified as such under the conditions set forth in the International Fire Code, International Building Code, Uniform Abatement of Dangerous Buildings Code, Washoe County Solid Waste Management Code, or any other Reno Municipal Code or Washoe County Code or the Nevada Revised Statutes.

While we need to be accountable for our own behavior and ensure that we ourselves do not in any way cross over from prayer and an exercise of our Free Speech to being a public nuisance, we should also be protected from those who seek to disturb our peace or use noise as a nuisance towards us.   The Reno Police Department Non-Emergency number is: 775-334-2677.   I recommend you program it into your cell phone.   If you do contact the police for an incident of Disturbing the Peace or a Noise Nuisance, please also contact us at 40DaysforLifeRenoTahoe@gmail.com or 530-412-1573 and let us know how your call was handled.   Please get the name of the officer with whom you spoke, as well as their badge number.   If a report was taken (this is what is required for them to follow-up on the matter) be certain to ask for the case number and provide that to us as well.

Please Ask Your Church to Join Life Chain & Adopt A Day at the Sidewalk

We have posted an invitation to participate in Life Chain, along with a sample Bulletin Announcement & Pulpit Announcements is available at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/LiveChainInvite.   Please bring this to the attention of your Pastor.   If you believe you’ll be able to join us, please RSVP through our Facebook Event, located at:

Thus far, our campaign success in maintaining a nearly constant vigil at the sidewalk has been possible because people like you have stepped up and requested that their pastors support Adopt a Day through their church.   The vast majority of the churches that have stepped up to this challenge have been Catholic, but this campaign is by no means a Catholic endeavor.   The national director of 40 Days for Life is not Catholic, and many of the campaigns around the country are led by non-Catholic Christians.   Many of our local regular prayer volunteers are themselves not Catholic and we would like to see our campaign better reflect the entire body of Christ as we Pray to End Abortion.   Won’t you please approach your pastor and request that your congregation join on the sidewalk to defend the most innocent and defenseless children be protected from abortion?

What we have found is that those who come to the sidewalk grow in the depth of their relationship to Christ.   Being there where the killings are done also creates a sense of just how serious this issue is and increases the intensity of the prayers that it will come to an end.   These are the spiritual benefits of participating in this campaign at the frontlines, not to mention the benefits that occur when a mother sees those who love her child enough to come out of their comfort zone to plead for the innocent life.   We can’t save every child that is brought to the abortion site, but on occasion, we see the fruit of our labors, through an innocent life saved.   Won’t you come to Pray to End Abortion?

We will also be holding a Life Chain on March 14.   This event started as a gift from God to a small ministry in Yuba City, CA in 1987 and in 2009 over 1700 locations held a Life Chain event.   This non-denominational Christian effort is for those who call Jesus Christ Lord, and are willing to declare abortion a grave evil that defames the name and holiness of God (Leviticus 18:21).   For more information on Life Chain, call Elizabeth Labat at: 504-296-8670

Video Cameras Recommended

It has been recommended, and I’d like to encourage you to consider this recommendation, that those coming to the sidewalk bring a video camera when you come to pray.   Place the camera in your car, or on a tripod on the sidewalk, to videotape you while you are standing in prayer.   It is prudent that we have a video record of all that occurs at the sidewalk, as we gather peacefully, prayerfully and lawfully.

Volunteers Needed Thurs 7-8am, 11-12, 4-7pm, & Sat 2-7 pm

Thursday brings the Valley View Christian Fellowship to the sidewalk and we welcome their presence.   We currently have a gap in our coverage on Thursday from 7-8 am, 11-12 & 4-7 pm.   Which hour can you cover with prayer?   Could you stop by the sidewalk before going to work.   This gives you an opportunity to be present when the doctor and his staff arrive for their day of work.   We would like them to see that we are praying for them as their day begins.

Perhaps you can take an early lunch and come to the sidewalk at 11 am, staying to pray for an hour.   Or would you be able to swing by at the end of the work day to pray from 4-7 pm.   We like to continue our prayers at the sidewalk even after the doctor and his staff have left for the day.   If the weather turns, praying from your car still provides the spiritual benefit to the site, but seeing a prayer volunteer standing in inclement weather has turned more than one person from abortion or from participating in the industry, as they see the strength of our commitment.   Help us maintain a constant vigil for 12 hours of the day, from 7 am until 7 pm daily.   Please register using our online calendar, so we can be certain that the sidewalk is covered in constant prayer.

On Friday, we have had prayer volunteers commit to the schedule from 7 am until 7 pm, with at least 2 volunteers for most of the day.   This is our goal, to have at least 2 people present at all times.   Thank you to the volunteers who have helped to make this happen.

On Saturday we need your help.   Please sign up for an hour or more, especially in the afternoon.   We have the opportunity to maintain our spiritual presence at the sidewalk on a constant basis, but we need your help to make it happen.

Please register the hours when you can come pray at the sidewalk by going to our on-line calendar at:  www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe

You are welcome to sign-up or simply show-up to pray at the sidewalk at any time of the day or night when you are available to join us.   Your prayers have value well beyond anything we can see and we welcome whatever contribution you can make to the effort as we Pray to End Abortion.

40 Days through Scripture

Day 16 - John 10 – 13 (including:    John 11:1-4)
Now a man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.   Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and dried his feet with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was ill.   So the sisters sent word to him, saying, “Master, the one you love is ill.”   When Jesus heard this he said, “This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

What glory could God be intending to come from all the abortions that have occurred since 1973?   We know that through Christ all things are possible, even bringing abortion to an end.   We also know, that in some mysterious way, God always brings a greater good from whatever evil occurs.   Let’s allow this tragedy to bring out the best in the Body of Christ, as we come together to Pray to End Abortion, as one body, across all that separates us otherwise.

Join us as we read the New Testament over the course of the 40 Day campaign.

Delaware Suspends PA Abortionist’s License

[Operation Rescue, Dover DE] by Sarah Howell (on Bryan Kemper’s Blog)- Dover, DE – The Delaware Board of Medical Practice suspended the medical license of Pennsylvania abortionist Kermit B. Gosnell yesterday during an emergency hearing. Gosnell’s Pennsylvania license was suspended last week after authorities investigating an abortion death and drug violations discovered appalling conditions and a collection of aborted baby remains dating back 30 years.

Members of the Delaware Board based their decision to suspend Gosnell’s license on action taken against him in Pennsylvania.

Raymond L. Moore Sr., the president of the Board of Medical Practice, issued the following statement: “Based upon the severity of the violations alleged in the complaint, and based upon the suspension of Dr. Gosnell’s license in the state of Pennsylvania, we have concluded that the suspension of Dr. Gosnell’s license to practice medicine in Delaware is necessary to protect the public until we can fully hear the matter.”   To Continue Reading

Abortion 101

Post-Abortive Healing

After years of prayer asking for this result, the Pro-Life movement is seeing an influx of new workers come to the effort, men and women who have previously had or encouraged an abortion.   Before they can be fully effective in their new calling to save those who are currently at risk of following in their footsteps, before they can fully put the pieces of their own lives back in order, before they can leave their old “choices” behind, it is important that they have the opportunity to participate in a healing program.   There are three basic ways of attaining healing available in the Reno/Tahoe area:

  • the PACE program, coordinated through the Reno CPC, a 10-12 week group bible study
  • Rachel’s Vineyard retreats, a weekend long healing retreat
  • individual counseling, preferably through a Christian counselor who has experience with post-abortion trauma

Sidewalk Coverage Continues to Grow – Resources for Women Available

The coverage at the sidewalk has grown from campaign to campaign until now we are pleased that there is nearly non-stop coverage with multiple volunteers praying at the sidewalk through-out the day.   Thank you to Our Lady of Snows who adopted the sidewalk today.   It is wonderful to have church communities come together to show their support for this effort.

Our constant presence is capturing the attention of the drivers going by and the number of stops, with people asking questions continues to grow.   One of the most common questions we receive is “What are you doing for the women whom you are asking to make another choice?”   The answer is that we have a list of local pregnancy resources that we are able to offer them.   If you haven’t seen this handout, please download a copy from our website.   There is a link to it located on the team page, or you can go there directly at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/resources.

If you plan to go to the sidewalk to pray, please sign our Statement of Peace, located at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/statementofpeace.    Those who participate in 40 Days for Life are asked to commit to being peaceful, prayerful and lawful while we are at the sidewalk.

This story from the national campaign was worth sharing:

A young woman walked up to the 40 Days for Life vigil outside an abortion center in Austin, Texas recently. She signed up to join the others in prayer … and then immediately sat down on the sidewalk and started to cry.

One of the volunteers stopped praying for a moment to approach the young woman, whom she had never met before, and asked her if she needed a hug. This volunteer assumed that the thought of what was going on inside the abortion facility had simply overcome this woman and brought her to tears.

But that wasn’t the case. To her surprise, she found out this young woman was crying for another reason.

“I’m pregnant right now and don’t want to be,” she said. “I’ve already had four abortions.

She said she didn’t have an abortion scheduled. “But I keep feeling this huge temptation to just go to an abortion clinic, pay my $400 and get it over with. I came to the sidewalk to pray, and to be around people who are like-minded as I am.”

The young woman told one of the sidewalk counselors that she was twelve weeks into her pregnancy. She had already been to a pregnancy resource center, but was still a mess emotionally.

She had become a Christian, she said. “But with this pregnancy, I just feel so depressed. I’m living in a women’s shelter, and the last thing I want right now is to be pregnant.”

The sidewalk counselor took her to dinner, and they sat and talked for hours. “As they developed a long-term plan to get this young woman the help she needs,” said Elizabeth McClung, the local 40 Days for Life coordinator in Austin, “she said something that should serve as an encouragement to every single pro-lifer who has ever thought about going to pray at an abortion facility.”

“If you guys weren’t out there praying,” this woman said, “I would have pulled up to the facility, sat in my car for hours on end — and ended up going inside for a fifth abortion. Since you were on the sidewalk praying, I knew I could find comfort and support there, so I went there to cry instead. Thank you for being there.”

“Her story is the perfect example as to why we not only pray from home and from church, but we also go pray at the very places where lives are being hurt and taken,” Elizabeth said.

40 Days through Scripture

Day 15 - John 6 – 9 (including: John 6:16-21)
When it was evening, his disciples went down to the sea, embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum.   It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.   The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing.   When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid.   But he said to them, “It is I.  Do not be afraid.”   They wanted to take him into the boat, but the boat immediately arrived at the shore to which they were heading.

When the world is in turmoil around you, remember the words of Christ, “Do not be afraid.”   Draw closer to Jesus, read Scripture, imitate His life, live a life of charity, strive to animate the body of Christ in all you do, and you have nothing to fear, if you are living according to His will.

Join us as we read the New Testament over the course of the 40 Day campaign.

“Less of Me”

[Social Justice Begins in the Womb] by Sarah Howell (on Bryan Kemper’s Blog)- Well, I’m about a week into the season of Lent. The time of the year for fasting, for cutting back on foods we love too much, or shows we watch too often. The time of the year when we choose quiet meditations over getting angry with our spouse, and steady scripture readings over sporadic video surfing on Youtube. It is the season in which we learn to understand just how much we must truly decrease, so that God may increase. And, while decreasing is never really an easy lesson to learn, God is teaching me that His increase is more than worth it. Because it is one of the more amazing miracles I have ever witnessed.

About a week ago, some of my most favorite visitors came to share a meal with me in Wilmington. It was the day before Lent, and I could not think of a better way to enjoy it than a hamburger and fries from P.T.’s Grill, with a girl by the name of Jennifer and her two constantly smiling children, Aiden and Marissa.

I’ve written about Jennifer before but, in case you never read that article, I’ll recap: Jennifer was the first pregnant girl I ever counseled during my time as a missionary with Stand True. She was 18 when she found out that she was pregnant, and, like many young girls who never expected to be expecting, she was terrified. She called the office one night and Bryan asked me speak to her. At the time, I felt wholly unprepared to take that call, but the Holy Spirit inside me felt wholly convinced that we should. So I said a quick prayer, took a very deep breath, and allowed my part in Jennifer’s story to begin.

That moment was a decrease for me, as well as a decrease for Jennifer. I allowed God to use me as a source of comfort for a scared, young girl, and Jennifer allowed God to wrap her in His love, and give her a child.   To Continue Reading

Abortion – The Life of the Mother

The case of what happens when the life of the mother is threatened, is a scenario frequently raised as the necessary exception for allowing legal abortions?   What do medical experts and others say about this situation, both medically and ethically?   See http://www.all.org/article.php?id=10681 and http://www.all.org/article.php?id=10682.

In instances such as an ectopic (“tubal pregnancy”), the mother’s life is threatened by the growth of the child in her fallopian tube, an organ which is not intended to support a growing fetus.   The inevitable growth will result in a rupture, causing the mother to hemorrhage and risk bleeding to death.   How is this situation addressed ethically?   The answer can be ascertained through the application of the Principle of Double Effect

Day 14 - No Abortions Today!

Day 14 – No Abortions Today!

Table of Contents

Local Campaign News

No Abortions Today

The wonderful news from the sidewalk was that there were no abortions today!   The facility was closed to clients although there were staff present during the day.   It’s hard to know what to expect these days, as their schedule seems to be in a constant state of flux, perhaps trying to avoid the hours when we have volunteers present at the sidewalk.   But now with a more constant presence, this effort on their part becomes less effective.

Our prayer volunteers were present on the sidewalk today, immersing the property, and all those involved at the site, in constant prayer.   We have found that many of the employees seem to be warming to our presence, even giving occasional smiles and waves as they enter the property.  We pray that, just as Abby Johnson left her position at Planned Parenthood to work for Life, that they too will come to join us as we pray on the sidewalk.   Abby Johnson left her job as director for Planned Parenthood and now stands on the sidewalk of the same facility she once ran and counsels women entering.   We would welcome any of these women to do the same here in Reno!

Thank you to the many faithful volunteers who come to pray, even those who have not placed their names on the on-line calendar.   Your support makes the success of this campaign possible!

One prayer volunteer spoke of her time at the sidewalk on Sunday and how the drivers of the passing cars encouraged her in her prayers.   This confirms the experience of another volunteer, who while standing in prayer was recently greeted by a passing driver who stopped to give him $20 to put towards supporting our efforts.   We’ve also had drivers stop to join in prayer, one even shared a story of their abortion experience, and our presence allowed them to begin the healing process.   God is using our efforts, while the abortion site is open and while it is closed.   Please, join us in this effort to make abortion unthinkable through prayer.

We pray that Dr. Stutes will come to accept that what he is doing in the abortion site goes against everything that is good, and that he surrender to the Love and Mercy of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who loves him unconditionally, even as he condemns the sin of abortion.   Christ loves a repentant heart and He longs to have his son turn from his sinful ways and return to the God who has loved him always.

Sign Incident Update

As reported in the Saturday Update, a police report has been filed on the incident involving the signs that stand across from the abortion site were run over.   Today investigators contacted at least 2 of the three witnesses of the event.   Thank you to Reno’s finest as they follow up with their investigation.   We look forward to their taking this incident as seriously as they took the matter of a pencil mark on the metal fence that fronts the abortion site.

Please Ask Your Church to Adopt A Day & Join Life Chain

World-wide, there are a reported 107 babies saved during the current campaign.   The incredible thing is that we know from local experience that there are saves that aren’t reported to the sidewalk, sometimes for years afterwards, and sometimes they are never reported to those who come to pray and council the women entering the abortion site.   Praise God for all those who are saved from abortion and the women who are spared the trauma!   Praise God also for those who have been brought to the healing of Our Lord Jesus Christ through the witness provided at the sidewalk.

40 Days through Scripture

Day 14: John 1-5 (including:  John 1:6-14)
A man named John was sent from God.   He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.   He was not the light, but came to testify to the light.   The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.   He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world came to be through him.   He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him.   But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice  nor by a man’s decision but of God.

And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.

Christ became man so that we might know Him and be saved.   But he entered the world in the humble form of man, coming through the birth of an innocent child, whose life was delicate and unprotected, except for the love of a mother who gave Him life.   He is our role model in all things, including the example that all life is precious, even the life of an unborn child in the womb.   What light, what joy might that child bring to his parents if allowed to live?

Please pray that all involved with abortion will come to appreciate that the lives they take are a gift from God, just as Jesus was a gift, precious and uniquely selected for the family in which he has been placed.   Children often provide the blessing of bringing their parents closer to God.   Let us pray that every woman who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant will seek first Christ when trying to understand how she is to cope with the challenges she faces.

Practitioner Denies He Botched Legal Abortion That Killed Hispanic Woman

[LifeNews] by Steven Ertelt - A New Your City abortion practitioner is denying he did the botched abortion that killed a local Hispanic woman last month. The abortion was done at the A-1 Women's Care abortion center located in Jackson Heights and, although abortion practitioner Salomon Epstein does abortions there he denies he did it.

Last month, 37-year-old Alexandra Nuñez died after a botched abortion claimed her life.

The State of New York Department of Health has opened an investigation into Epstein and his abortion center.

But, in an email received over the weekend, Epstein told LifeNews.com he did not do the failed abortion that claimed the woman's life.

"I did not treat this patient and I do not operate the A 1 clinic that is mentioned," he claims. "You may call that clinic directly ... not one of my patients ever died."

"You should share this with your friends at Operation Rescue," Epstein told LifeNews.com.

After passing along the email to the pro-life group, OR investigators contacted the A-1 Clinic and didn't get very far.

"A call was made by Operation Rescue investigators and an unidentified receptionist refused to give any information, but did not deny it when questioned if Epstein worked at the clinic," OR informed LifeNews.com today.

"If you got an e-mail, you work it out with him," she said.

The investigator responded, "But he asked us to call you," at which time the receptionist hung up.

Operation Rescue investigator Tara Shaver says a receptionist told her late last year that Salomon Epstein was involved with the abortion facility.

Shaver later filed a complaint with the New York Medical Board against Epstein when news of the Nunez abortion death surfaced. Shaver was sent a letter confirming that an investigation was underway and has since spoken with investigators..   To Continue Reading

Representative Trent Franks – Abortion Worse for Blacks than Slavery

This video has been creating quite a stir in the mainstream media and through-out the liberal blogosphere, as he states that abortion has more devastated the black population than slavery ever did.   He carefully qualifies the fact that this in no way excuses the horrible tragedy of slavery, but merely points out the fact that as we look back in wonder that our nation could have ever condoned slavery that we acknowledge that abortion now does even greater damage to Black Americans.   His comments on this topic can be found at minute 6:30 on the tape.   Watch for yourself.

40 Days through Scripture

Day 13: Luke 20-24 (including: Luke 23:44-49)
It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon because of an eclipse of the sun.   Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.   Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit”; and when he had said this he breathed his last.   The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said, “This man was innocent beyond doubt.”   When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts; but all his acquaintances stood at a distance, including the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw these event.

Would you have traveled from Galilee to be there by the side of Christ on the cross?   Today, the most innocent are dying every weekday at 5915 Tyrone Rd. Are you willing to come and pray for these and their mothers, who know not what they do?   Please, be present.

Without your prayers, the women who enter the abortion site will leave deadened to their potential as mothers.   They will be scarred physically, emotionally, and spiritually.   Is it possible that your prayers and the witness of your peaceful presence will be what is needed to prevent her a lifetime of regret?   Could your prayers be sufficient to spare the life of an innocent child?

And if the Centurion, responsible over 100 Roman soldiers, and who had most likely participated in many crucifixions, was able to see the innocence of Christ, is it not possible Dr. Stutes can also come to realize that the children he has been ripping from their mother’s wombs are also innocent.   Let us continue to keep him and his staff in our prayers, that they may come to know, love and serve Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Join us as we read the New Testament over the course of the 40 Day campaign.

Abortion Uber Allies

[Population Research Institute] by Steven W. Mosher - Ignoring the polls and the House of Representatives, President Obama is pushing ahead with a health care bill that will force Americans to pay for abortions.

He has proposed what he calls a “targeted set of changes” to the Senate-passed bill, which have the effect of making a bad bill for babies even worse. (An 11-page summary is available on the White House website here).

Bear in mind that the Senate bill (H.R. 3590) already promotes abortion in multiple ways, making it the most pro-abortion legislation since Roe v. Wade. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), a cautious critic at best, posted a study of the anti-life provisions of the Senate bill that ran no fewer than thirteen (13) pages.

Now comes Obama's version, ladling on $11 billion for “Community Health Centers.” Planned Parenthood will be the beneficiary of much of this money, as the President helps his friends at the abortion organization get even richer off our tax dollars.

Obama also wants to subsidize private health insurance that covers abortion, and to mandate that even non-subsidized plans to cover abortion, in effect forcing all of us to pay for someone else's abortion.

The House bill (H.R. 3962), on the other hand, has no place in Obama's plan, patently because it was stripped of its abortion language by the Stupak-Pitts Amendment.   To Continue Reading

Planned Parenthood’s Response to Undercover Sting Videos

[US News and World Report] Posted: February 25, 2010 - By Deborah Kotz – For nearly two years, Lila Rose has been a thorn in Planned Parenthood's side. The UCLA student has taken a hidden video camera to various clinics across the country and posed as a minor who is several weeks pregnant by a much older boyfriend. Her aim is to see if clinicians follow state laws regarding the reporting of statutory rape and getting parental consent for abortions. In nine cases, her videos suggest they weren't.

In fact, two weeks ago Alabama put a Birmingham Planned Parenthood clinic on probation after an inspection triggered by one of Rose's videos. State health inspectors found that the clinic failed to get the signature of minors on its forms verifying parental consent for abortions. Vanessa Cullins, Planned Parenthood's vice president for medical affairs, told me the national office is "concerned" and that this affiliate will soon be merged with a Georgia affiliate that "has more resources."

In one of the videos, taped in July 2008 at a clinic in Memphis, Rose poses as a pregnant 14-year-old who wants to have an abortion immediately. She's told that as a minor she has to bring a parent along but then convinces the receptionist to allow her to talk to a counselor. During the ninth minute in this unedited video, Rose says that she's 14 and her boyfriend (who's not with her) is 31 and then asks if he's going to get in trouble. "No," the counselor says. "You promise?" Rose asks. The worker then says the boyfriend could if she tells her manager but adds, "I'm not going to tell anybody. Please don't say that I told you this. ... Just say that you have a boyfriend 17 years old." Tennessee state law defines statutory rape as someone at least four years older than the victim having sex with someone older than 13 and younger than 18. The state requires a reporting of such cases to authorities.

The counselor did tell Rose that she'd need to see a judge if she wanted to have an abortion without her parent's consent. The counselor said that she should tell the judge that her boyfriend was also a minor to protect him from a statutory rape charge.

A similar scenario had occurred when Rose took her hidden video camera to an Indianapolis clinic a month earlier.

A Planned Parenthood spokesperson who didn't want to speak for attribution says that the counselor on the Memphis tape was no longer an employee by the time the tape was released. Nonetheless, the clinic immediately retrained all its staff, the spokesperson says. According to a December 2008 statement from Planned Parenthood of Indiana, the Indianapolis clinic dismissed two employees who were featured in Rose's video, and the president of the state organization said that "we've already made changes to tighten procedures and reinforce our reporting policies with all health center staff across the state."   To Continue Reading

Contraception is Harmful to Women

Contraceptives have long been unhealthy for women, but now, even such pro-choice media outlets as the New York Times are reporting on the fact that even the newer birth control pills have serious health risks  (see: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/26/health/26contracept.html) and condoms, long promoted as a way of reducing the risk of contracting disease, have been found to  increase risky behavior, resulting in an increased risk of exposure (see: http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2009/oct/09101901.html)  As recently as Monday, Oct 19, 2009, Cincinnati.com published a piece outlining how women are harmed by the failed contraception / abortion cycle, as well as the poor relationships that use of contraceptives encourages.

Day 12 - Sidewalk Participation Grows

Day 12 – Sidewalk Participation Grows

Local Campaign News

Sidewalk Participation Grows

Today there were parents from Bishop Manogue High School, along with prayer volunteers from Reno, Truckee and Fallon who came to the sidewalk to Pray to End Abortion.   Even on this day, with questionable weather and when the on-line calendar looked like we’d have fairly sparse coverage, we were blessed with numerous volunteers coming to pray at the sidewalk.

What we have seen thus far during the Spring campaign, is that each day brings more volunteers than we have seen in past campaigns, and groups that have participated in the past are growing in their support.   And, our coverage is more constant than we’ve seen before.   This is evidence that those who have come to the sidewalk in the past have appreciated the value of bringing their prayers to the place where the killing is done, both during the hours that the abortion site is open and during the weekend and evenings.   Won’t you come to Pray to End Abortion?

Video Cameras Recommended

It has been recommended, and I’d like to encourage you to consider this recommendation, that those coming to the sidewalk bring a video camera when you come to pray.   Place the camera in your car, or on a tripod on the sidewalk, to videotape you while you are standing in prayer.   It is prudent that we have a video record of all that occurs at the sidewalk, as we gather peacefully, prayerfully and lawfully.

Volunteers Needed Sun all day; Mon 7-8 am, 5-7 pm & Tues 7-8 am

On Sunday, we had a volunteer willing to cover the morning who, due to car troubles, has had to back out of praying at the sidewalk this weekend.   Can you help fill the gap?   This is an especially good time for first time prayer volunteers, as the abortion site is not open on the Sundays.   This means you will not need to worry about interacting with the abortion site staff, nor will you find yourself in a quandary as to how to approach women entering the property.   Please, sign up on the Vigil Calendar and help us cover the sidewalk in continuous prayer.

On both Monday and Tuesday, we are looking for a prayer volunteer to come to the sidewalk at 7 am.   Is this near your route to work?   If so, could you spend an hour of prayer at the sidewalk to begin your day?

On Monday, we also have a gap in our prayer coverage from 5-7 pm.   Thanks to the Our Lady of Snows Parish, our sidewalk will be covered in prayer from 8 am – 7 pm.   Praise be to God for all our faithful prayer volunteers.

You are welcome to sign-up or simply show-up to pray at the sidewalk at any time of the day or night when you are available to join us.   Your prayers have value well beyond anything we can see and we welcome whatever contribution you can make to the effort as we Pray to End Abortion.

Please register the hours when you can come pray at the sidewalk by going to our on-line calendar at:  www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe

40 Days through Scripture

Day 12: Luke 14-19 (including:    Luke 18:9-14)
He then addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else.   “Two people went up to the temple area to pray, one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector.   The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity – greedy, dishonest, adulterous – even like this tax collector.   I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’   But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me as sinner.”   I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.

Remember when we are present at the sidewalk to pray, regardless of how firmly we know that abortion is a moral evil, and as we pray for those who participate in abortion, that we not therefore consider ourselves to be morally superior to those who enter the abortion site.   It is in our own humility, our awareness of our own humble condition as compared to the perfection of God, that we can reflect the Love of Christ in an authentic manner to those whom we encounter.   An air of superiority is unpleasing to God and will create a distance between us and those around us.   If we are to help those in need of Christ, we must be approachable, and reflect the ultimate humility of Christ himself.

Join us as we read the New Testament over the course of the 40 Day campaign.

National News

Massachusetts Rationing Proposals Show Danger of Federal Bill

[National Right to Life] - By Burke J. Balch, J.D., director, NRLC's Powell Center for Medical Ethics, "Over-promising plus under-funding forces rationing." For months, the National Right to Life Committee has been hammering that point, as regular visitors to our blog at http://powellcenterformedicalethics.blogspot.com/.

We have repeatedly warned that rationing will result if the federal government creates a major new entitlement to health insurance for the uninsured, yet relies on vague hopes that greater efficiency will restrain health care costs instead of providing an adequate, sustainable funding mechanism to pay for the entitlement.

Now we are seeing clear evidence that NRLC is not exaggerating--it comes from Massachusetts.

In 2006, Massachusetts enacted a widely heralded plan essentially mandating universal health insurance coverage, with subsidies to enable the low-income uninsured to afford it. To pay for the subsidies, the state bill cobbled together a series of funding sources, including federal payments, existing state funds for health care for the uninsured, and other sources of revenue that shared one commonality--they were not based on what people actually pay for health care. (For background on why this is a fundamental error, see http://www.nrlc.org/MedEthics/SaveNotRation.html and the webinar that links to that page.)

After the first couple of years of the new program, Massachusetts began to face a mounting gap between the cost of health care subsidies and the available funds. Last year it relied on one-time funding from the federal stimulus bill to help bridge the gap.

This year, faced with mounting evidence that the state simply cannot afford the increasing outlays, Governor Deval Patrick on February 11 sent the legislature a bill that embodies precisely what NRLC has warned will happen on the federal level. Presumably to avoid a "two-tier" system in which the subsidized health insurance would be worse than the health care the rest of Massachusetts residents get, Patrick's bill proposes sweeping measures to limit what any of the citizens of Massachusetts would be ALLOWED to pay for health care!   To Continue Reading

Video Vignettes

My Chance, by Jaime Thietten

Dave Andrusko, editor of the NRL News says, “When NRL Convention Director Jacki Ragan IM-ed me a link to the My Chance video, it came with Jacki's highest commendation. Had Jaime been available, she would have been a prominent part of NRLC's 2009 national convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. You don't have to be a music critic to recognize talent this awesome. Halfway through "My Chance," it's clear that Jaime's voice is a gift from God. It’s an extraordinarily sensitive and powerful pro-life song. We are certainly looking forward to having her share at our 2010 national convention.” He originally wrote an article for his daily blog on the NRL site (www.nrlc.org) on April 10th, 2009. Mr. Andrusko received such an overwhelming positive response that he concluded the natural next step would be to offer the video to the subscribers.   (source: http://www.jtmusic.net/home/entry?id=13)
