National Campaign Daily Intention

We are the defenders of true freedom. May our witness unveil the deception of the “pro‐choice” slogan.

Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.—2 Corinthians 3:17

Norma McCorvey (the former Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade) used to work at an abortion mill named “A Choice for Women.” She now realizes what a cruel irony that title was. She saw first hand, just as pregnancy resource center counselors see, that women don’t get abortions because of freedom of choice, but rather because they feel they have no freedom and no choice. They feel trapped, abandoned, desperate and afraid, and have been led to believe that abortion is their only option. As Frederica Mathewes‐Green has written, no woman wants an abortion like she wants a Porsche or an ice cream; rather, she wants it like an animal caught in a trap wants to gnaw off its own leg.

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” That doesn’t mean that the Spirit allows us to do whatever we want or to decide for ourselves what’s right and wrong. Rather, it means that the Spirit gives us the freedom to do what is right, the power to choose what is good, when we see it before us and yet feel pulled in the opposite direction. Liberty means that we no longer have to feel doomed to do what we know is wrong. We are the people of the Spirit of the Lord, and when we take action on be‐half of life, especially by being present at abortion mills, we are acting on be‐half of true freedom, and imparting to those who are in bondage the power to do what is right.

National Campaign News

On the Streets of New York

The National campaign reports on how the campaign is progressing around the country. Here is an excerpt from today’s update.

A few days ago, I mentioned that Shawn Carney, our 40 Days for Life campaign director, was headed to New York City. Shawn made a short video account of his visit to the 40 Days for Life campaign in the city labeled "the abortion capital of America."

If you only watch one video during this 40 Days for Life, it HAS to be this amazing clip:

During the brief video -- which was filmed right on the street in Queens -- you will:

  • Hear from a volunteer who puts in 6-10 hours EVERY DAY outside of two of the largest abortion centers in the United States
  • See hundreds of passers-by receiving a pro-life education on the street
  • Discover the challenges of holding a campaign in a crime and drug infested area -- on the spot where a murder took place right before 40 Days for Life
  • Meet a sidewalk counselor who shares how they are saving lives in the midst of the hustle and bustle
  • Learn JUST HOW MANY lives have been saved in the Big Apple due to 40 Days for Life campaigns over the last two years -- prepare to be amazed in the last 20 seconds of the video!

The video is loud. Everything's in motion. It's got attitude. But hey -- it's New York City! :-) …

Local Campaign News

A World Trade Center Event, Each and Every Day in America

Last weekend, Mnsgr Reilly, founder of “Helpers of God’s Precious Infants”, headquartered in New York, spoke at a Pro-Life retreat in Sacramento. He told of being in New York, at the sidewalk, counseling women when the planes flew into the World Trade Center. Sadly, the abortions were not interrupted that day for the all the surrounding chaos. But what struck most of his reflections on the day was his reflection while in prayer at ground zero, as the day came to a close.

He closed his eyes and reflected on what had happened, while the dust was still settling, and the emergency personnel continued digging in the hopes of locating survivors. With the entire incident raw and unprocessed, the image that came to his mind while in prayer was first of workers standing at the water cooler, or coffee pot, just beginning their day, greeting their co-workers, feeling totally secure in their safe office environment, until into this safe scene exploded a airplane, and a ball of fire. His immediate next impression was of a child in the mother’s womb, equally safe and secure until the tools off abortion rip through the safety and the child’s world explodes. Abortion is the terrorism that we have ignored for 36 years, silently decimating our nation at the tune of nearly 4000 American’s killed each and every day. A World Trade Center event occurs each and every day in our nation. Where is the outrage? Lord have mercy!

Remember to Pray When you Come to the Sidewalk

One of our prayer volunteers commented that we need to remember (and she included herself in this admonition) to pray while standing at the sidewalk, rather than lapsing into conversation with the others who come to the sidewalk. It is our prayers, more than anything else, that will make the difference, therefore, remember to utilize our most powerful weapon against abortion, the power of prayer. She recommends that if you’d like to visit with others who have also come to the sidewalk that you take your conversation to Denny’s afterwards (or other similar location).

Correction – Police Non-Emergency Number – 775 334-2099

I’ve been told that the number we have been asked to use for the current campaign, is 775-334-2099. If you’d like to report being sprayed by the watering system or having music blasted while you’re at the sidewalk, please use this Reno Police non-emergency line.

Before you come out to pray, please sign a Statement of Peace which can be found on-line at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/StatementofPeace. If you can get to the sidewalk in Reno, to register for the hours when you’ll be at the sidewalk, go to: http://www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe. For those who live close to Carson City, please consider going to the sidewalk in front of the Tahoe Women’s Care, located on Mica Drive. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this effort. To register for your time there, go to: http://www.vigilcalendar.com/carsoncity. Don’t forget to send your impressions of your time at the sidewalk to renotahoe@40DaysforLife.com.

Our website has been undergoing major renovations, due to the assistance of our webmaster, Suzie. Take at look by going to: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe and don’t miss the Resources section!

Remember, if you have plan to participate as a member of 40 Days for Life, you are asked to follow the law, including those that apply to private property. Do not enter the property of the abortion site and do not leave “Litter” behind when you depart. This includes large crosses on the public land directly across from the abortion site. If you have not yet signed a Statement of Peace, please do so now on-line. Also remember, that as witnesses to Christ, we come to bring the Love of Christ to the sidewalk. While this refers to everyone with whom we interact, it applies especially to Dr. Stutes and his staff. It is through his conversion of heart that we have the most to gain, especially if he repents of the abortions he has participated in and accepts Christ and His forgiveness.

Wrap-up Rally & Celebration, Nov 1st, 5 pm

Just around the corner is our Wrap-up Celebration, at which we will blow a Shofar at the sidewalk to mark the end of the campaign. After a brief Rally at the sidewalk, we will proceed by car, slightly less than 2 miles to the River Rock Christian Fellowship, located at 4690 Longley Lane, Reno. At 6 pm there will be a Pot Luck Dinner, followed by a movie at 7 pm. Please download a copy of our Flyer and ask your church to post it this weekend. www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/flyer

Do you know how to drive a trailer? If so, please contact Carol Marie for help with a task this Sunday, 530-412-1573 or renotahoe@40DaysforLife.com.

Coming Events

Carson City Church Fair – Volunteers Found – Fri / Sat Oct 30-31, noon – 5 pm
The St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Carson City will be having a fair on Oct 30-31, from noon – 5 pm each day, during which we have been invited to promote 40 Days for Life. Thank you to the three volunteers, Laura who has stepped up to help on Friday, Joe who will be assisting on both Friday and Saturday and Dick who has offered to join the effort on Saturday. With a team of volunteers like this, who can go wrong! It turns out that this will be no simple Church Fair that St. Teresa’s is holding as they have contracted with a carnival ride firm to bring the good old-fashioned Fair fun to this Carson City Church. If you’d like to enjoy some wholesome family fun, pack-up the kids and head to St. Teresa’s this weekend, and don’t forget to stop by our booth and say “Hi”. While the vendor booths (as we’re called) will only be there on Friday and Saturday, the Fair will be continuing on Sunday as well.
Wrap-up Rally – Sunday, Nov 1 – 5:00 Shofar, 6:00 Pot Luck Dinner, 7:00 Movie
Mark your calendars for a true celebration, as we honor God for all the graces He has showered upon our campaign, this Fall and since we began this effort in the Fall of 2007. November 1st is the Catholic All Saints Day feast, the perfect time to join in celebration of all the Saints who have given their lives in service to Our Lord and to Thank Christ for the many graces He has showered on our campaign for the past 40 Days as we have sought to do His will. We have planned an event you will not want to miss. River Rock Christian Fellowship, having been recently blessed with a new Church home less than 2 miles from the West End Abortion Site, has graciously offered to allow us to use their facility for a Pot-Luck Dinner and Pro-Life Movie Night. We will end the 40 Day campaign with the blowing of the shofar at the sidewalk at 5 pm, along with a brief rally of prayer, scripture and sharing, and then we will proceed by car to their church for a pot-luck dinner of Celebration, as we fellowship and share our experiences of the past 40 Days. Our evening will conclude with a Pro-Life movie. Please, print a copy of our FLYER and with your Pastor’s permission, post it at your church for this weekend. Then, don’t forget to contact Millie at 775-348-9088 to confirm your attendance at this special evening. If you are willing to help, contact us at renotahoe@40DaysforLife.com. Your assistance and participation are greatly appreciated. We are looking for help in putting on this event, so please do not be shy, step forward and get involved!

40 Days through Scripture

Day 36 - I Peter 1 – I John 1 (including: I Peter 4:12-19)
Beloved, do not be surprised that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as if something strange were happening to you. But rejoice to the extent that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice exultantly. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. But let no one among you be made to suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as an intriguer. But whoever is made to suffer as a Christian should not be ashamed but glorify God because of the name. For it is time for the judgment to begin with the household of God; if it begins with us, how will it end for those who fail to obey the gospel of God?

“And if the righteous one is barely saved, where will the godless and the sinner appear?”

As a result, those who suffer in accord with God’s will hand their souls over to a faithful creator as they do good.

Loyola University Researchers: Contraceptives Nearly Double Chance of Stroke

[LifeSiteNews.com] - A new study by Loyola University Health System neurologists indicates that oral contraceptives increase the risk of stroke about 1.9 times. The study involved the analysis of numerous previous studies conducted on the issue. Nevertheless, despite this finding the Loyola University's press release stated that the "benefits [of contraception] still outweigh risks for most users."

The research covers ischemic strokes, which are caused by the loss of blood supply to the brain. Overall, there are about 4.4 ischemic strokes for every 100,000 women of childbearing age. According to the study, published in MedLink Neurology, the use of birth control nearly doubles this risk, increasing it to roughly 8.5 strokes per 100,000 women.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, in 2002 roughly 11 million women in the US used oral contraceptives. Assuming that Loyola University's definition and Guttmacher's definition of contraceptive use are the same, this would mean that oral contraceptives may have contributed to over four hundred strokes in the US in 2002. About 100 million women use such contraception worldwide, which, under similar assumptions, would mean that contraception may contribute to over three thousand strokes each year. Political News

Pelosi Perturbed by Pro-Life Dem

[Heritage Foundation] - It looks like Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) isn’t happy with Democrat Rep. Bart Stupak’s efforts to make sure that taxpayer dollars do not pay for abortions in any new health care plan and, according to The Hill, “he may work with Republicans to torpedo healthcare reform unless he gets a vote to strip abortion-related provisions out of the House bill.”

From The Hill’s Blog Briefing Room: During an interview on C-SPAN’s ‘Washington Journal’ show, Stupak (D-Mich.) said he is undeterred in trying to ensure that taxpayer dollars do not pay for abortions. Stupak, who opposes abortion rights, acknowledged that some in his party are upset with his public campaign to change the bill. ‘The Speaker is not happy with me,’ Stupak said.

Stupak has pulled together 40 like-minded Democrats who plan to block healthcare reform legislation from coming to a vote on the House floor if the bill includes federal subsidies for abortions. As The Hill reports, “Stupak wants a vote on the House floor to strike the language, and predicts he would have the votes to pass such an amendment.”

The northern Michigan democrat’s threat to work with Republicans to halt healthcare reform appear tailored to forcing a vote to strip abortion-related provisions from the House bill. From The Hill: Stupak said one way or the other, there will be a vote on the abortion language, either “though a rule, or on the floor, or on a motion to recommit.”

Why is this an issue?

Even though President Barack Obama pledged, “Under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions,” The Foundry previously reported that Obamacare will force the American people to pay for abortions because there is no law to prevent it from happening. What’s more, a provision known as the Hyde amendment, which blocks federal dollars from being spent on Health and Human Services programs, doesn’t apply to the health care reform.

But don’t take our word for it. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops sent a letter to Congress on October 8th writing: “No one should be required to pay for or participate in abortion. … No current bill meets this test.”

Bart Stupek – Would Vote for Abortion Funding Health Care

[Heritage Foundation] - Earlier today, The Foundry wrote about Rep. Bart Stupak’s (D-Mich) claim that he and like-minded, pro-life Democrats will work with Republicans to “torpedo healthcare reform unless he gets a vote to strip abortion-related provisions out of the House bill,” as reported by The Hill.

That sounded like good news, but in an exclusive Foundry video of a town hall held in Cheboygan, Mich., on Saturday, it appears that Stupak intends to vote for the Democrats’ healthcare reform, even if it includes public funding for abortion. Watch the video from the Town Hall meeting.

- So, what tangled webs are the pro-aborts weaving? Is this a case of look over here, while we pass things behind your back with our other hand? This merits close watching.

Abortion 101

Abortion – The Life of the Mother

The case of what happens when the life of the mother is threatened, is a scenario frequently raised as the necessary exception for allowing legal abortions? What do medical experts and others say about this situation, both medically and ethically? See http://www.all.org/article.php?id=10681 and http://www.all.org/article.php?id=10682.

In instances such as an ectopic (“tubal pregnancy”), the mother’s life is threatened by the growth of the child in her fallopian tube, which is not intended to support a growing fetus. The inevitable growth will result in a rupture, causing the mother to hemorrhage and risk bleeding to death. How is this situation addressed ethically? The answer can be ascertained through the application of the Principle of Double Effect (see http://www.all.org/article.php?id=10049&search=Principle%20of%20Double%20Effect)

U.S. House Speaker Pelosi wants to ram the pro-abortion health care bill through the House - Telephone your representative in the U.S. House today!

[NRLC] - This is an urgent congressional alert from the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) in Washington, D.C. Please act on this alert immediately. …

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Ca.) is planning to try to ram the massive health care bill (H.R. 3200) through the House on short notice, without allowing consideration of a critical pro-life amendment. National Right to Life is urging every pro-life citizen to immediately TELEPHONE the office of his or her representative in the U.S. House of Representatives with a clear and firm message urging a NO vote on the so-called "rule," which is the procedural vote that would allow passage of H.R. 3200 with no amendments allowed, and also to vote against the pro-abortion bill itself.

Even if you have already called and written your representatives in Congress about the health care bills, it is critical that you call again now. This will just take a few minutes. For guidance on how to make your call, click here, or go to the NRLC Legislative Action Center at http://www.capwiz.com/nrlc/ and click on the "Urgent Congressional Alert."

National Campaign Daily Intention

Pray for post‐abortive women who cannot forgive themselves; may they understand that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sin is covered. Blessed is the one to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.—Romans 4:7-8

In the passage above, the Apostle Paul making a point about justification by faith, refers back to David’s words in Psalm 32:1‐2. In spite of the enormity of David’s sin—adultery with Bathsheba and his murder of her husband—and the utter absence of any personal merit, David in his brokenness, understood the imputed righteousness of God. David’s response was not continued guilt over his sins, but praise for his freedom from guilt, and God’s power to live life differently. Once your relationship with God has been restored, your guilt has served its purpose and should no longer be given place in your life. This is true regardless of the particular sin, including the sin of abortion.

As a post‐abortive woman, I too struggled with this issue until I realized that punishing and hating myself after receiving God’s forgiveness was an insult to God. It was as though I were minimizing Christ’s work on the cross as insufficient to cover my sin. I was denying Him the opportunity to bring glory to His name for the healing and restoration He wanted to do in my life. I was giving victory to the enemy who having lost the battle for my soul, was bent on destroying my testimony as I accepted the continual guilt he heaped on my mind.

It is my joy to continually sing of God’s grace rather than give the devil a foot‐hold in my life. Don’t waste God’s mercy! Accept His forgiveness and for‐give yourself as testimony of His amazing grace.

Sometimes it Takes a While

The National campaign reports on how the campaign is progressing around the country. Here is an excerpt from today’s update.

As we enter the final days of this 40 Days for Life campaign, please keep in mind that God does not always grant the blessing of seeing immediate results from our efforts.

Such is the case in one 40 Days for Life community where the campaign has been conducted several times. Participants knew that because of their peaceful, prayerful witness outside the abortion clinic, lives had been saved from abortion. But what was really going on inside that building?

One person found out in a most surprising way. This person was not scheduled to pray at this particular day and time, but stopped by the vigil following a meeting. The clinic manager stepped outside to clean windows, so the vigil participant saw an opportunity.

"I spoke kindly and introduced myself."

About half an hour later, the manager came out and asked to talk -- "and invited me into the clinic!"

To say the least, what followed was an interesting conversation.

The manager wanted to explain and justify what goes on at the clinic, but it seemed like this clinic staffer was offering excuses for being involved in the abortion business. Furthermore, the manager professed to be a Christian who was certain "in my heart" that this was God's calling, and that what goes on in the clinic is not wrong.

"I asked if the manager's heart had ever been wrong," said the vigil participant, "and did my best to lovingly communicate my disagreement and the reasons I am passionate about defending both the unborn and their mothers. I said that Jesus cared for children, and that it does not matter what anyone thinks about when a fetus is a person or whether abortion is wrong. What matters is what God thinks; what Jesus thinks."…

The Doctors Didn’t Even Encourage Her

At this evening’s Youth event, held at Little Flower Catholic Church, Kat, a Polish mother of a two year old daughter shared with us this report:

When Kat was only 21 weeks pregnant, she began to suffer challenges in her pregnancy that threatened to result in her child being delivered prematurely. Because at 21 weeks the child is not considered to be viable outside the mother’s womb, she was told that if her child were delivered this early in the pregnancy, there could be any number of complications, from death, to blindness, to mental retardation. She was neither encouraged to fight for the life of her child nor given much hope that such a commitment would likely yield successful results, but she knew that if God wanted her daughter to survive, that she wanted to leave it to God, and He would provide.

She accepted that the only way to give her daughter a fighting chance was for her to remain on bed-rest for at least 3 weeks, and possibly longer, in the hopes of delaying the early delivery of her child, giving her every possible chance of maturing to the point that she could survive outside the womb. Her doctor commented that in his 17 years of practice, she was the first mother facing such a choice that had been willing to sacrifice her own comfort for 3 weeks to fight for the life of her child. I makes me wonder was it his manner of encouragement (or lack thereof) that failed to strengthen women to handle the challenge of a few weeks that would result in saving her child’s life? Or have we really sunk as a culture to such depths that when a woman’s own child is struggling for life, that she can’t be bothered with the discomfort of spending a few weeks laying down when it can save the life of her own child. Have we bought into the lie that only a healthy life is worthy of being lived, so that parents are led to believe that a child that might have a disability are better off dead?

Whatever the cause, this beautiful child, who is now two years old and with no discernable disabilities, was abandoned by her doctors, who didn’t feel the need or responsibility to encourage her mother when decisions needed to be made. Kat says that the pain of staying completely immobilized for 3 weeks was nothing compared to the sense that she was in this all alone, that her doctors had no appreciation for the worth-while nature of her desire to strive to save her child, that was the hardest part of her ordeal.

What will happen to children like Kat’s daughter if health care rationing is put in place, with doctors being penalized for cost over-runs? Will doctors who see each life as precious suffer the loss of their practices due to government incentives and disincentives that penalize them for even allowing a parent to make the decision that Kat made to give her daughter a chance at life?

Thank you to the two volunteers, Laura who has stepped up to help on Friday, to Joe who will be assisting on both Friday and Saturday and to Dick who has offered to join the effort on Saturday. With a team of volunteers like this, who can go wrong! It turns out that this will be no simple Church Fair that St. Teresa’s is holding, they have contracted with a carnival ride firm to bring the good old-fashioned Fair fun to this Carson City Church.

Day 35 - Hebrews 11 – James 5 (including: Hebrews 12:1-13)
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood. You have also forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons: “My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him; for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges.”

Endure your trials as “discipline”; God treats you as sons. For what “son” is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are without discipline, in which all have shared, are you not sons but bastards. Besides this, we have had our earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not [then] submit all the more to the Father of spirits and live? They disciplined us for a short time as seemed right to them, but he does so for our benefit, in order that we may share his holiness. At the time, all discipline seems cause not for join but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.

So strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees. Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed.

Aborted Fetal Material Used in Anti-Wrinkle Creams

[LifeSiteNews.com] - Children of God for Life announced today that Neocutis, a bio-pharmaceutical company focused on dermatology and skin care, is using aborted fetal cell lines to produce several of their anti-aging skin creams.

For years Children of God for Life has been a watchdog on pharmaceutical companies using aborted fetal cell lines in medical products and they have received thousands of inquiries from the public on the use of aborted fetal material in cosmetics.

However, the group says that this is the first time they have encountered any company bold enough to put the information right on their own website and product literature.

"It is absolutely deplorable that Neocutis would resort to exploiting the remains of a deliberately slaughtered baby for nothing other than pure vanity and financial gain," stated Executive Director Debi Vinnedge. "There is simply no moral justification for this."

Neocutis' key ingredient, known as "Processed Skin Proteins," was developed at the University of Luasanne from the skin tissue of a 14-week gestation electively-aborted male baby donated by the University Hospital in Switzerland. Subsequently, a working cell bank was established, containing several billion cultured skin cells to produce the human growth factor needed to restore aging skin. The list of products using the cell line include: Bio-Gel, Journee, Bio-Serum, Prevedem, Bio Restorative Skin Cream and Lumiere.

Vinnedge is calling for a full boycott of all Neocutis products, regardless of their source.

"There is absolutely no reason to use aborted babies for such selfish motives," Vinnedge said. "It is anti-life, anti-woman and counter-productive as Neocutis is about to find out!" Full story at LifeSiteNews

National Campaign Daily Intention

May we come to know that divine life, in relationship, creates human life.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. —John 1:1-3

“In the beginning" was God. Always, before all times, there was God. This particular God ‐‐ the God of the Bible, the God of St. John’s Gospel ‐‐ is different from all other gods. This God is alive and full of life. This God is not the picture of deadness and death, aloneness and isolation.

This God is the picture of life, relation‐ship, and unity. For within this God, within this one God, there are three divine persons who live, who love, and who work ‐‐ together. This is the glorious mystery of the Trinity. The Trinity means divine life. The Trinity means three, living Persons ‐‐ Father, Son, and Holy Spirit ‐‐ who relate to each other. The Trinity means mutual love and service among three Persons.

The Word was always with God the Father. This Word was, is, and will be the Trinity’s second person. The Word is also the Son of God or, as revealed in time, Jesus Christ. God the Father and God the Son live, love, and work for each other. As one, they create "all things" together: the Father creates all things, including all human life, through the Son.

So the Father, through the Son, creates all human lives. The little one swimming in his mother’s womb, the infant smiling in his father’s arms, the child crying in pain in a hospital bed, the energetic teen running another mile, the old man gasping for his last breath ‐‐ all were created, at their beginning, by the Father through the Son. No exceptions. Divine life creates human life.

Six Days to Go, 411 Saved!

The National campaign reports on how the campaign is progressing around the country. Here is an excerpt from today’s update.

The words a sidewalk counselor spoke to a woman entering the abortion center in Dallas, Texas summed things up so accurately. "I know the baby is not the problem," the counselor said, "but it's the situation you are in."

The woman took information from the counselor but continued into the clinic -- while 40 Days for Life vigil participants prayed for her and her child. An hour later, the woman came out of the clinic in tears. She was married, she said, but thinking about abortion -- though she doesn't know why it got to that point. But when she saw people praying, she knew abortion was not the answer, and that indeed, it was her situation that was the problem, not the baby.

There are two other stories from Dallas with a similar theme -- and the same outcome.…

To read the entire national update go to: http://40daysforlife.com/blog/?p=458. Please join us as we give witness to the truth at our sidewalk. Utilize this Right before someone puts in place an ordinance that removes our right to free speech.

Detectives Visit the Abortion Site & Meet with Stutes

Today Laura visited the sidewalk on her day off of work, and afterwards sent us this report:

Karen & I were at the sidewalk today. An unmarked police car drove out of the facility shortly after we arrived & parked to the right of the entrance on the street. He walked past us on the sidewalk, to the end of the fence, crossed the street & walked the easement and back to his car. He only said “hello” so us as we walked by. As soon as he left, the sprinklers began so we crossed the street to the easement. 5 seconds later the same police car pulled parallel to my car [parked across the street in the dirt] & the officer got out to talk to us. He saw the sprinklers getting us wet & he heard the music. He stated he had been inside speaking with him. He suggested that we not stand in the gutter nor in the street. The officer was very polite, answering our questions and concerns in the 10 minutes or so. Did I mention, as soon as the officer was out of his car & heading toward us, the sprinklers & music were silent!

Later John from Fernley stopped by to pray on his way home. He joined us in the last decade of the Joyful Mysteries and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Don’t think I heard but 1 honk of discontent from passersby today, yet about 8 in affirmation. Praise be Jesus.

If you’d like to report being sprayed by the watering system or having music blasted while you’re at the sidewalk, please use the Reno Police non-emergency line. Their number is 775-334-2677.

40 Days through Scripture

Day 34 - Hebrews 2 - 10 (including: Hebrews 3:12-15)
Take care, brothers, that none of you may have an evil and unfaithful heart, so as to forsake the living God. Encourage yourselves daily while it is still “today,” so that none of you may grow hardened by the deceit of sin. We have become partners of Christ if only we hold the beginning of reality firm until the end, for it is said:

“Oh, that today you would hear his voice:

‘Harden not your hearts as at the rebellion.’”

Pregnancy Resource Centers: Turning Despair to Hope

[PriestsforLife.org] - One of the most encouraging facts about the pro-life effort in our country is that there are far more pregnancy resource centers (over 2300) than there are abortion mills (about 740).

The centers used to be called “crisis pregnancy centers” and were often advertised with the promise of “free pregnancy tests.” Now, the more common term is “pregnancy resource centers” (PRCs), and the range of services provided goes far beyond pregnancy testing, and includes the services of fully licensed medical clinics.

Moreover, these centers do not just operate on their own with the support of their local communities. Rather, there are large well-organized networks of pregnancy centers, united by a commitment to professional standards of care, expert training programs, and joint efforts to make sure everyone knows exactly where to turn for alternatives to abortion.

All this is good news for the pro-life movement, and to help spread that good news, a report was recently compiled by several of the leading pregnancy resource networks and organizations that foster them. Called “A Passion to Serve, A Vision for Life,” this pregnancy center report for 2009 was prepared by Heartbeat International, Care Net, the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, LIFE International, and the Family Research Council. The corresponding website is www.apassiontoserve.com.

As the report states, “PRCs serve some 1.9 million people each year with pregnancy assistance, abstinence counseling and education, community outreach programs and referrals, and public health linkages….Every day in the United States pregnancy resource centers assist an average of 5,500 Americans, female and male, young and old, with sexuality-and-pregnancy-related concerns.”

Twenty-nine of every 30 people engaged in pregnancy center work are volunteers, involved with lay and peer counseling, medical services (including ultrasound and STD testing), center upkeep, fundraising, parenting classes, and programs for healing after abortion. Full story at PriestsforLife.org

"Law & Order's" Wholly Unexpected Treatment of Abortion was Must-Watch Television

[NRLC] - Friday of last week, NRLC had this to say about a Law and Order Episode:

Last week NRLC received a letter about "Dignity," tonight's episode. I didn't happen to see the letter until recently. But I probably would not have bothered to open it had it come to me first, based on the program's two previous treatments of the abortion issue.

But then there is the last line of the letter from the executive producer: "At the very least, it ["Dignity"] will confound those who thought they had us pegged." As I watched an advanced copy of the program today, I realized that truer words have rarely been spoken. …

Today NRLC provided a link to a clip from the episode (the complete show is apparently available for purchase on-line through iTunes). They had this to day about the clip:

… The NBC program [Law and Order] is hardly known for treating the abortion issue in an even-handed manner. Friday's program--"Dignity"--allowed the pro-life position to be presented in full and through the mouths not only of self-identified pro-lifers but also through the agonizing reflections of members of the "Law & Order" cast. …

Watch the video clip.

Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood is one of the largest abortion providers in the world. But where did it all get started and what does Planned Parenthood really stand for today? It’s important to be armed with the facts if you want to understand the impact Planned Parenthood is having on our culture today, especially on young people and their perception of their sexuality and their fertility.

Founder Margaret Sanger had some interesting views that are worth looking into. For more info on her, go to: http://www.stopp.org/sanger.htm

Stop Planned Parenthood (www.stopp.org) has a number of resources to provide you with the facts about Planned Parenthood. A good page to get started is: http://www.stopp.org/resource.htm

But you don’t have to take the word of those who are opposed to Planned Parenthood to see just how much of a negative impact they are having on today’s youth. You can go to their own Teen Talk website to see for yourself what they are selling to youth. Go to: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/teen-talk/ Warning, they can be obscene and graphic, so this content is not recommended for the young, despite how Planned Parenthood is targeting their materials.

For guidance on how to make your call, click here, or go to the NRLC Legislative Action Center at http://www.capwiz.com/nrlc/ and click on the "Urgent Congressional Alert."

Spread the Message of Life on October 31st by making Pro-Life Jack-o-Lanterns!

There are many opportunities to be a voice for the voiceless, and most of those opportunities require us to go someplace public. But, on the eve of All Saints Day, the public comes to us! So make a pro-life jack-o-lantern and send your photos to us. Be sure to include your name, age and address in the e-mail, and we'll post the best ones on our homepage! It doesn't have to be anything fancy. It could be as intricate as the design here or as simple as the word "Pro-Life." Whatever your skill level, be creative and tell the world about the personhood of preborn babies! Send your pro-life Jack-O-Lantern pictures to prolifepumpkin@all.org.

National Campaign Daily Intention

May we absorb the truth that God is paying attention to us, and to each human life, personally and individually.

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor.– Psalm 8:3-9

How often we ignore the phrase, “stop and smell the roses” and instead submit to the all too “urgent” task at hand. Is this tendency what keeps us, at least in part, from acknowledging that God’s care for His sacred creation is paramount in His own mind?

The Psalmist speaks of God’s handiwork: the heavens, the work of his “fingers,” and then points to God’s masterpiece – human life. He declares to us that God is mindful of us. God keeps His masterpiece in His thoughts. God, the creator of the awe-inspiring heavens, is not distracted by the tasks before Him. He is not pulled away, as we might be, by thoughts of something “more important.” God is paying attention to and attending to His crowning glory, His masterpiece of creation, which cannot be duplicated or replaced, which surpasses the beauty of all other created things — the human being. There is no way to adequately describe how God feels about us as human beings. There are no words to fully portray His love, compassion or desire to be in communion with us. Perhaps, the closest we can come, is to contemplate the thoughts of a mother as she gazes for the first time at her newborn child. God cares for Life. We, as His followers, should take time to consider the life He has created and called upon us to love and protect.

National Campaign News

A Sense of Reponsibility and a Surge of Strength

The National campaign reports on how the campaign is progressing around the country. Here is an excerpt from today’s update.

Everywhere I go, I continue to be encouraged by the stories of change brought about through 40 Days for Life — not just changes for women and their babies, or clinic workers and abortion supporters, but deep, lasting, spiritual changes in the hearts of those who answer the call to pray, fast, and stand vigil for an end to abortion.

Such is the case with a man my family and I had the privilege of meeting during our New England 40 Days for Life visits just over a week ago. His name is Tom Dwyer of Hartford, Connecticut — one of more than 250,000 people who’ve prayed with 40 Days for Life.

Tom first heard about 40 Days for Life in the fall of 2007, when the first coordinated national campaign was just about to begin. “I felt that I could participate in the prayer and fasting,” he said, “but I did not feel the need to go to the abortion clinic.”

Tom went through most of the 40 days and faithfully prayed and fasted, but had the feeling that he wasn’t really doing all he should. “I asked my wife, Joyce, if she was willing to go to the abortion clinic,” he said. “She agreed to go.”

He e-mailed the coordinator in Norwich — it’s an hour from his home in Hartford, but it was the closest location — saying that he and his wife wanted to pray on a specific day from 10 to noon. “I received an e-mail back stating that ‘God must have sent you to us.’ They had no coverage for the hours that we selected.”

So Tom and Joyce drove to Norwich. “Since this was my first time at an abortion clinic I was a little apprehensive,” Tom admitted, “but after I saw a car go by and give a thumbs-up, I felt better.”

Joyce had to leave the vigil for a few minutes, leaving Tom as the only person praying.

“I experienced a feeling unlike any I had ever experienced before,” he said. “I had never been to an abortion clinic and now I was the only person there witnessing for the unborn babies. I felt a great deal of responsibility and at the same time a great surge of strength that made me want to publicly state my opposition to abortion. At that one point in time and at that location, I was the sole representative publicly proclaiming that abortion is wrong. I knew from that point on, that witnessing at abortion clinics was something I needed to do.”

40 Days through Scripture

Day 33: I Timothy 6-Hebrews 1 (including: 2 Timothy 2:8-13)

Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David: such is my gospel, for which I am suffering, even to the point of chains, like a criminal.   But the word of God is not chained.   Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation this is in Christ Jesus, together with eternal glory.   This saying is trustworthy:
If we have died with him, we shall also live with him;
if we persevere we shall also reign with him.
But if we deny him, he will deny us.
If we are unfaithful he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself..

National Campaign Daily Intention

Pray that we display an attitude of humility as we stand in peaceful vigil, as we fast, as we knock on doors in our communities. Though we proudly proclaim Christ’s truth, may our boasting be only in His grace.

These six things the Lord hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that de‐vises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.—Proverbs 6:16-19

The Lord who made us knows us well. I can’t help but think that perhaps as He inspired these words, He knew that our tendency might be to make the judgment call on which sins should be labeled as detestable. He wants us to be absolutely clear, however, that the sinfulness of man en‐compasses much more than the external sins that we easily identify.

Lest we assign a particular sin as that of an abortionist, or a worker in an abortion facility, or an abortion activist, the Holy Spirit insured that our sin of pride would be listed first. In this pas‐age that speaks of eyes, tongue, hands, heart, and feet we realize than every part of our being is subject to the curse of sin.

We all need Jesus Christ who saved us from the penalty of sin, saves us from the practice of sin as we abide in Him, and will one day remove us from the presence of sin. Praise His Holy name!

Proper self‐esteem in a follower of Christ is a matter of recognizing and confronting yourself in your humanity, including the tendency to sin.

It is also a matter of embracing Jesus’ work on the cross ‐‐‐ His grace that covers a multitude of sins.

The Apostle Paul sums it up best in 2 Corinthians 10:17‐18:

But he who glories let him glory in the Lord. For not he who com‐mends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends.

Christ Forgives and Heals

The National campaign reports on how the campaign is progressing around the country. Here is an excerpt from today’s update.

Today's short video report comes from the front lines in Lexington, Kentucky.

During this powerful 6-minute video, you will hear from several faithful 40 Days for Life volunteers about why they are involved, including:

  • An Evangelical pastor whose brother was almost aborted...
  • A mother of a Down's syndrome son...
  • And a post-abortive woman who was on the verge of suicide before getting involved in 40 Days for Life and finding healing in Jesus Christ.

Throughout this 40 Days for Life campaign, God has blessed us with more than 400 stories of babies spared from abortion -- and mothers spared from abortion's aftermath.

We also know, of course, that too many women unfortunately continue to make a very poor "choice" when it comes to the lives of their unborn children. We stand and pray for them as well. …

To read the entire national update go to: http://40daysforlife.com/blog/?p=447. Please join us as we give witness to the truth at our sidewalk. Utilize this Right before someone puts in place an ordinance that removes our right to free speech.

Carson City Sidewalk Prayers Bear Fruit

One of volunteers, Dick, tell has this to say about his visit to the sidewalk on Friday:

While my wife and I were praying on the sidewalk in front of Tahoe Women's Care in Carson City tonight, a man drove up and asked for information on Adoption facilities available to women considering abortion. He has been witnessing in his own Church community and spreading the pro-life message, and has been asked about resources available to women considering abortion. I was happy to give him contact information I had with me about the Crisis Pregnancy Centers in Reno and Carson City, as well as the brochure with the hot line numbers. We talked for a few minutes about the power of prayer, and about the need to add good works to our faith, as James told us to do. I was very pleased that we had been there at that particular time to answer this man's questions.

Before you come out to pray, please sign a Statement of Peace which can be found on-line at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/StatementofPeace. For those who live close to Carson City, please consider going to the sidewalk in front of the Tahoe Women’s Care, located on Mica Drive. To register for your time there, go to: http://www.vigilcalendar.com/carsoncity.

Reno Sidewalk Volunteers Hear – Abortion Still Hurts When You’re 70 Years Old

While Dick was on the sidewalk in Carson City, Theresa had her own report to offer from the sidewalk in Reno:

My time at the sidewalk today was a little eventful, [I] met a post abortive woman who was probably in her early 70's. She pulled off the side of the road to talk to Rachel and I. She was a little angry that we were out there but she expressed that she too regretted her abortion, it was obvious to Rachel and I that she was really hurting.

We also talked to a man in his 70's whose girlfriend had an abortion many years ago "without any consideration for him", he said, seemed very sad and grateful that we were out there.

Then I ran into a guy who was an acquaintance of my late husband's... when he'd stopped his car he didn't recognize me. He was just curious about why we were out there I think. Yet [he] didn't seem to like abortion very much since he was cursing about the abortionist the whole time he was talking to me…

… I held a large sign today that said... I've had abortions. There is a better way. God wants you and your baby to live. There is no judgment here, only the way out before or after.

If you can get to the sidewalk in Reno, to register for the hours when you’ll be at the sidewalk, go to: http://www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this effort.

Do not enter the property of the abortion site. If you have not yet signed a Statement of Peace, please do so now on-line. Also remember, that as witnesses to Christ, we come to bring the Love of Christ to the sidewalk. This refers to everyone with whom we interact, especially Dr. Stutes and his staff. It is through his conversion of heart that we have the most to gain, especially if he repents of the abortions he has participated in and accepts Christ and His forgiveness.

Is it an Assault? - Continued

Another volunteer wrote in follow-up to our Assault article the other day, saying:

Hmmm; the County Sheriff came out to talk to me about spraying the neighbor’s dog w/the garden hose a couple weeks ago. (Only way I could get him to quit barking.) So…..if it’s an assault to spray a dog, I’d think it’s also an assault to spray people, don’t you??

It does make you wonder, doesn’t it! Would the Doctor have been better off if he had simply ceased “watering” on off days, rather than ensuring that it was defiantly obvious that he’s been using the watering system to harass and assault those who come to the sidewalk to pray? Perhaps he’ll rethink this use of water, but if not, it seems reasonable to report these assaults to the non-emergency line of the Reno Police department each and every time they occur.

Poll Says Northern Nevadans Want Abortion Ban

[KOLO TV] – Visitors to the KOLO website were asked the other day if they supported an abortion ban amendment to the Nevada state constitution and the polls are consistent with recent national polls that indicate that Americans are Pro-Life. The results are now in, with 66.1% of the respondents answering Yes they would support such a ban. Only 28% of those responding indicated that they do not support a ban and 5.9% of those who answered opted that they felt it didn’t matter due to the fact that it’s already legal at the Federal level. Handheld Ultrasound: A Peek at the Future of the Pro-Life Movement?

[LifeSiteNews.com] - New technology hailed as a stunning leap forward in modern health care may be about to give pro-life advocates unheard-of power to save a life - in the palm of their hand.

At the Web 2.0 summit in San Francisco this week, General Electric unveiled the ultra portable and user-friendly Vscan, an ultrasound machine about the size of a large flip phone. Dubbing it "the stethoscope of the 21st century," the company offered various scenarios in which the device could vastly advance the landscape of diagnostics.

For pro-lifers on the front lines, the new gadget could hugely improve abortion-bound women's access to ultrasounds, which have been found highly effective in helping mothers choose life for their baby. In the past, the sheer size of the devices has given pro-lifers a perennial puzzle over how to bring the heavy medical equipment into the paths of such women.

Thomas Peters of the American Papist blog was among the first to ponder the new invention as a potential "revolution in sidewalk pro-life counseling technology." Chris Slattery, the founder and president of the New York pregnancy resource center Expectant Mother Care, called the breakthrough "absolutely awesome." Slattery said that his own operation has been actively pursuing smaller versions of the ultrasound - having just crammed his mobile ultrasound into a 15-foot cargo van, a step up from the previous 20-foot mobile home. "Our movement is going more and more mobile with ultrasound," said Slattery. Some pro-life organizers, he said, are so devoted to the life-saving benefits of ultrasound that they have created "a whole sub-segment of the movement" dedicated to providing mobile ultrasound.
