Reno Abortion Site Closed on Snow Covered Day, Thanks Be to God!

While the snow made if difficult for two of our most faithful prayer volunteers to get to the abortion site on Monday morning, when they arrived there in the early afternoon, they were happy to see that abortion site was closed for business.   It was mentioned that it’s a bit miraculous that a storm has hit Reno with so much snow while the surrounding mountains of Tahoe had barely an inch, which has all melted away.   The abortion site is closed, and for that, we Thank God!

While the prayer volunteers who are typically there from 8-11 am daily were unable to get to the sidewalk, there were others praying from 11:30 am – 4 pm, traveling from as far as Truckee and from as near as Huffaker Lane.   It didn’t appear that they were open to serve women, and no sign was seen of Dr. Stutes the abortionist.   But the Waste Disposal truck was seen leaving the property in the late afternoon and one of the women employees was seen leaving afterwards.   We continue to keep her and her colleagues in prayer, as we pray that they will come to appreciate that there are better ways to make a living, ways that better serve the women to come to them in distress.   These women deserve an option that leaves them in less long term pain than the dead end of abortion.

Vigil Needs This Week

  • Volunteers Needed Tues 7-8 am; & Weds 11-3 pm, 6-7.
  • On Tuesday, the Our Lady of Snows Parish has adopted the sidewalk.   The only hour at the sidewalk that hasn’t been covered is the early morning from 7 to 8 am.
  • On Wednesday, the MOM’s group from the Immaculate Conception Parish is adopting the sidewalk.  In addition to their coverage, we need volunteers from 11 am – 3 pm and again from 6-7 pm.

In the meantime, you are welcome to sign-up or simply show-up to pray at the sidewalk at any time of the day or night when you are available to join us.   Your prayers have value well beyond anything we can see and we welcome whatever contribution you can make to the effort as we Pray to End Abortion.

Life Chain Rally – Sunday March 14, 2 – 3:30 pm

Mark your calendar Spring Life Chain Rally held on Sunday, March 14, from 2-3:30 pm at South Virginia and South McCarran in Reno.   We will stand to give witness to the truth that Abortion Kills Children.   Signs are available at $1 apiece.   Churches are encouraged to make them available to their congregants for a $2 deposit, allowing those who would like to keep them, and others who would like to get their deposit back to return them. President Obama, Pelosi, Reid Still Pushing Pro-abortion Health Bill!

[National Right to Life, Washington] - President Obama and top Democratic congressional leaders are continuing to push hard for enactment, in the months just ahead, of sweeping health care restructuring legislation that includes far-reaching pro-abortion provisions.

President Obama has invited key Republican congressional leaders to participate in a "summit" on health care on February 25.  But Administration officials, and Democratic congressional leaders, already have made it clear that they remain committed to enactment of the essence of the health bill passed by the Senate in December, H.R. 3590.  Kathleen Sebelius, the secretary of Health and Human Services, has said that effort to enact the massive legislation will "accelerate" after the February 25 summit.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) has also repeatedly affirmed her determination to win final approval of broad restructuring legislation.  "We will move on many fronts, any front we can," she said on January 28.  "We'll go through the gate. If the gate's closed, we'll go over the fence.  If the fence is too high, we'll pole-vault in.  If that doesn't work, we'll parachute in."

In recent weeks, National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) lobbyists have been busy educating members of the House about how enactment of the abortion-related provisions of the health care bill passed by the Senate (H.R. 3590) would constitute the biggest expansion of abortion by Congress since Roe v. Wade. 

"The Senate bill would result in direct federal funding of abortion, federal subsidies for private abortion insurance, and federal pro-abortion mandates," said NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson.  "The scope of the abortion-related problems with the Senate bill are being vastly understated in the news media."

Obama, Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nv.) are discussing plans to have the Senate pass a new, smaller bill, containing certain changes to H.R. 3590, using a fast-track procedure called "reconciliation" that would not be subject to a Republican filibuster.  Under this plan, the House would then pass both the original Senate-passed H.R. 3590 and the new package of changes at about the same time, and President Obama would sign both bills into law.   To Continue Reading

A storm has hit Reno, with as much as 2 feet of snow standing in places around the city, and yet the prayer at the sidewalk continues.   Did you remember to Pray to End Abortion?

A Tale of Two Words

[Alliance Defense Fund] - by Gary McCaleb - For six years, the legal battle was joined in Arizona, as the Alliance Defense Fund and allied attorneys battered against stonewalling state officials who were determined – in the face of every legal precedent – to block applications for a “Choose Life” license plate.

The donnybrook of motions and counter motions finally climaxed at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, where judges ruled in favor of ADF and those asking nothing more than the freedom to use their license plates to encourage people to support childbirth and adoption.

After the decision, I watched as a reporter approached our allied attorney.  He quickly got to his zinger: “Isn’t this way too much fuss over two words?  Does anyone really care?” 

I laughed out loud.  How many of his paper’s advertisers, I wondered, would turn up their noses at the chance to have two words of their choosing displayed on thousands upon thousands of automobiles across America?  How many politicos would love that opportunity?  And how many unborn children – if they could speak the longing of their hearts—would say: “Choose Life?”   To Continue Reading

Truckee Church Held Vigil in the Snow

On Saturday, the 4th day of the Spring campaign, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, from Truckee adopted the sidewalk and even Fr. Matt made time to come to the sidewalk and pray in the snow.   It is wonderful to know that the clergy stand in support of our prayers for Life given outside this place so filled with death.   News that Fr. Matt came to our sidewalk came at the same time that Sacramento reported that Bishop Soto visited and prayed at their vigil location, along with their prayer volunteers.  

Let us pray that we continue to see support from those who have the responsibility to lead the flock, the Body of Christ.   We welcome clergy of all denominations to come to the sidewalk to give a visible witness of the Love of Christ and we hope that they will come with members of their congregations.   It is through this loving example that lives are saved and souls are brought back to Christ.

Thank you to Eileen who worked to invite the parishioners of the Assumption Parish to participate in our campaign.   Many of those who came to the sidewalk today did so for the first time.   We’d love to have your church select a day to come as the unified face of Christ.   I firmly believe that it is only when we bring the entire body of Christ together to address this issue that we will begin to see leeway being made.   We look forward to seeing your church participate in this most important church ministry, as we protect the orphaned children, whose mothers have already spiritually abandoned them, as they cling to the walls of her womb, hoping against hope to survive to be born.

Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, deeply regretted what he had done.   He returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned in betraying innocent blood.”   They said, “What is that to us?   Look to it yourself.”

“What is that to us?”   Is that not the response that the post-abortive woman gets from the abortion industry when she comes to realize that she has sinned by betraying innocent blood?   It is up to us, as the body of Christ, to help these women in pain realize that the Love and Mercy of Christ is available to them, they simply need to turn to our Lord in repentance.   He is ever faithful to us, even when we have rejected him.  

How different Judas’s story might have ended if when he turned to the leaders of the people of God for his time, had assisted him when he felt the pangs of remorse.   Instead, they turned their back on him and he was denied knowledge of the mercy that would have spared his life, both mortally and immortally.

Pope Benedict: Dignitas Personae, Dignity of People Same in Abortion, Bioethics

[LifeNews.com, Vatican City] - by Kimberly Baker - In a February 13 meeting with members of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Pope Benedict said, “The questions of bioethics often place the reminder of the dignity of the person in the foreground.”

The Church’s attention to bioethics continues to keep pace with ever-new advancements in medical science. One of the more recent major documents from the Vatican on bioethical issues is Dignitas Personae (The Dignity of a Person). Issued in 2008 by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Dignitas Personae is an essential “follow-up” to its predecessor, Donum Vitae (The Gift of Life), from 1987.

Dignitas Personae explores new issues in the area of reproductive technologies over the past 20 years. The first part discusses anthropological, theological, and ethical aspects of human life and procreation.

The second section addresses new problems concerning procreation; it analyzes techniques for assisting fertility, the problem of in vitro fertilization, and the treatment of embryos in such procedures.

The third and final section discusses new treatments which involve the manipulation of the embryo or human genetic material: gene therapy, human cloning, the therapeutic use of stem cells, animal-human hybrids, and the use of human “biological material” of illicit origin. Abortion Procedures

[PriestsforLife.org] There are a series of different ways that abortions are done, determined primarily by the stage of the abortion being terminated.   Father Frank Pavone has a series of videos that describe each procedure in detail, each video addresses the procedure and several provide descriptions using the abortionist’s own words.

Suction Procedure – Used in the 1st three months of pregnancy, Fr. Pavone shows the tools used for an abortion, and using a model, describes the procedure.

Dilation and Extraction - Uses the birth process itself as the method of killing, Partial Birth Abortion is a version of this type of abortion.   Some forms of this abortion procedure remain legal.   Dr. Haskell, an abortionist, has given lectures on how to perform this type of abortion.   It has also been testified to in Congress that this procedure occurs.   This video includes a talk during which Dr. Haskell walks a group of doctors through the procedure of a partial birth abortion.   This is done while the video shows a drawn diagram, although the sound track is of an actual abortion in progress.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyKc6nPw6C4

Yesterday we reported on two saves at the sidewalk, including Elizabeth who returned for a refund after investigating the availability of resources to support her in making another choice, the choice of Life for her child. Yesterday evening, just as the update was being sent, Elizabeth sent the following text message to the volunteers who spoke to her at the sidewalk.

I just wanted to send you guys a text to let you know, that what you do out there does make a difference. When I went to that abortion clinic last week to drop off my money to terminate my pregnancy, I saw people standing outside with signs. I didn’t expect to see that and a part of me felt ashamed. I think that maybe there was another way. All this week I thought and prayed about it, and I realized in my heart what the right thing to do was. I can’t help but think, that had you guys not been there that day to remind me that I had another choice, that maybe one more baby would have died today. Don’t stop what you’re doing. It matters. It did to me. From the blonde lady in the white SUV, who picked up her money instead of aborting her baby today …

  • Tuesdays: covered with at least one volunteer from 7 am – 7 pm
  • Wednesdays: 2-3 pm; 6-7 pm
  • Thursdays: 2-6 pm
  • Fridays: covered with at least one volunteer from 7 am – 7 pm, starting next week
  • Saturdays: 2-7 pm
  • Sundays: 2-7 pm

Can you take one of these hours each week for the duration of the campaign and assist us in completing the prayer coverage?

When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together and one of them [a scholar of the law] tested him by asking, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with al your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it; You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

Remember, when coming to the sidewalk, that the emphasis must always be on bringing the Love of Christ to the sidewalk. It is only by being a good witness of this love that we can hope to bring these workers to Christ and the forgiveness he gives to the repentant heart.

Women Want Abstinence-Based Empowerment, Not NOW and Casual Sex

[LifeNews.com, Duluth, MN] - by Jennifer A. Marshall. A group that thinks an ad celebrating Tim Tebow's life is bad news for women might be a little out of touch with what women really want. That helps explain why the National Organization for Women and other feminist groups have vehemently opposed abstinence education while failing to notice that a culture of casual sex hasn't been so liberating for women.

Just ask the 29-year-old Briton living in America whose anonymous account appeared in her country's left-wing Guardian newspaper.

"(M)y sexual liberation was perversely trapping me in destructive relationships, while intimacy had become something elusive, insubstantial, disappointing, surreal," she writes. Weary of a "burlesque comedy where we all pretended we were emotionless and cool," she decided to stop having sex because "I wanted sex to be, quite simply, special again."

Similar world-weary statements have been recorded by researchers such as Dr. Miriam Grossman, author of "Unprotected," and Laura Sessions Stepp, author of "Unhooked: How Young Women Pursue Sex, Delay Love and Lose at Both." Only a third of young women say they truly wanted to have sex the first time they did, Stepp reports. Two Lives Saved in Reno!

The rally is behind us and the campaign is underway, and what a start! Today, while at the sidewalk, numerous women accepted the “Before You Choose” brochure, along with our slip sheets of information pointing them to local resources to support a pregnancy or to find post-abortion healing. As a result, both Elizabeth and Jessica chose to give life to their children.

Jessica was the first save we knew of this morning. When she arrived at the abortion site, she saw the many cars (including one belonging to one of the abortion site employees who parked immediately across from the driveway, presumably to prevent us from being there) and a trailer, also belonging to the abortion personnel, also parked immediately across from the driveway. Perhaps it was because of these vehicles that she got the impression that she should park on the street. She walked onto the abortion site property before we had an opportunity to approach her with an offer of help, but as she walked down the driveway, returning to her car, a post-abortive volunteer approached her and let her know that she didn’t need to choose abortion for her child. It turns out that Jessica has already had one abortion, when she was a 17 yr old student, and now, facing an unexpected pregnancy while studying for her chosen profession, she was torn about what to do. But when she learned that we had resources to offer, she was happy to make the choice for life. Please keep Jessica in prayer. She doesn’t have the support of the father, who is out of the picture, and she’s returning home to discuss the situation with her parents.

Later in the day, Elizabeth returned to the abortion site after doing a little research on the information we had provided her earlier in the day. She had left the abortion site intending to return to abort her child, but when she heard there were other options available, she took the time to investigate for herself and realized we were correct, she had other, more loving options available. She returned this afternoon to get her money back. When she approached the door, because they had seen her hug another of our prayer volunteers, they refused to let her re-enter the facility. They made her return to her car and they brought her refund out to her.

Praise God that we have two women who know that there are resources available to allow them to choose life for their children. Thank God that they have chosen to give their children life! Praise God that we had the opportunity to be there to play a role in this decision and that we were given the opportunity to see how our work played out in these decisions! God is Good!

A dozen people showed up last night at the Carson City Kick-Off Rally, which Cecelia deemed a success for their fledgling campaign. They had 2 speakers and those present then gathered in prayer to kick-off the campaign. But their vigil calendar still needs your assistance if you live in or near Carson City. Woman Who Threatened Pro-Lifers With Knife at Abortion Site Keeps Baby

[LifeNews.com, Duluth, MN] - A woman who faces assault charges after she pulled a knife on two pro-life advocates who encouraged her not to have an abortion has decided against having the planned abortion. Mechelle Tallulah Hall has pleaded guilty to second-degree assault but she has also decided to keep her baby.

Leah Winandy and other pro-life advocates were gathered outside the abortion business in Duluth when Hall approached the Building For Women abortion center. Winandy told Hall she cared about her unborn child but the woman responded by reportedly brandishing a knife and held it to Winandy's throat. The 26-year-old woman from Superior, Wisconsin plead guilty during a court hearing yesterday and admitted her crime under questioning from county prosecutor Nathaniel Stumme, according to the Duluth Tribune. Public defender Laura Zimm told Judge David Johnson that details of the plea agreement Hall made with prosecutors would have her serving probation but no jail time. The newspaper reached Hall at home afterwards and she said she has decided to have the baby and that she is happy the Winandys were present to persuade her otherwise. Full story at LifeNews.com

Reno Rally Rocked

The campaign has begun, and it did so with gorgeous weather, full coverage at the sidewalk and an amazingly peaceful and well attended rally. But the story behind how we managed to have such a peaceful rally is enough to make you laugh out loud. At approximately 3:30 in the afternoon, as the time approached to pick-up the trailer which has functioned as our stage for the past several rallies, a strange series of events occurred at the sidewalk. A large GMC truck arrived, hauling a trailer loaded with used appliances, and several cars pulled up to the open space directly across the street from the Reno Abortion site. Upon their arrival one of the personnel from inside the clinic came out to the sidewalk, and after making a few unnecessarily rude comments to the prayer volunteer present she proceeded towards the driver of the large GMC truck and directed him to move his vehicle towards the car of the prayer volunteer. At the same time, she directed another vehicle which had arrived to move to the front of the prayer volunteer. Within a few short minutes, the entire dirt lot directly across from the abortion site was filled with cars and trucks hauling trailers, each parked parallel so as to take up as much parking space as possible in the area where we typically hold our rallies. One of the trucks hauling a trailer came out from the parking lot at the abortion site itself, and each of the employees moved their cars out to the street for the evening. They gathered briefly on the driveway at the entrance of the parking lot, before eventually going into the building.

But even with as many vehicles as they had, they didn’t begin to fill all the open space on the block, and so, when our trailer arrived to set up for the Rally, we simply moved our venue down the block a short distance. For all their effort, they simply improved our event, as we were able to gather in peace, outside of the range of the foul noises that are broadcast from the speaker system installed at the front of the property of the abortion site.

There were several dozen participants in our Rally, and we were again blessed by the presence of Bri, Michael and their ever growing daughter Julianna, who was saved from the fate of an abortion at this very site nearly 2 years ago. Bri shared her story of an abortion that she did have at Dr. Stutes facility before subsequently becoming pregnant with her daughter. She shared the blessings that God has brought to her life as a result of her decision to give her daughter life, and the regret she lives with for the son she aborted.

Melanie, a new member to 40 Days for Life, joined us from Susanville, booking a room in Reno so she could stay over and participate in our Rally. She has never previously attended a Pro-Life event, but she knows that this is the first of many visits she will be making to this abortion site and those located in Southern California where she also maintains a home. Melanie stepped forward to the mic to encourage us to stay focused on the fact that we need to bring the Love of Christ with us to the sidewalk, because God Loves even those who work in the Abortion industry. She encouraged us to remember this, so that we can reflect that love in our dealings with them, regardless of how they choose to treat us.

Volunteers have stepped up to cover Sunday morning, but we still need assistance in the afternoon. Can you come to the sidewalk between 2 & 7 pm to ensure we continue to maintain unbroken coverage during this campaign?

On Monday, to complete our coverage at the sidewalk, we need assistance from 2 to 4 pm.

In the meantime, you are welcome to sign-up or simply show-up to pray at the sidewalk at any time of the day or night when you are available to join us. Your prayers have value well beyond anything we can see and we welcome whatever contribution you can make to the effort as we Pray to End Abortion.

Vigil Coverage Continues to Progress

To ensure unbroken coverage at the sidewalk from 7 am thru 7 pm every day for the 40 days of our campaign, we need volunteers present for 84 hours each week. As of now, we have 65 hours of each week covered with anywhere from 1 – 4 volunteers registered on our on-line calendar. The remaining hours to be covered are:

  • Mondays 2-4 pm
  • Tuesdays covered with at least one volunteer from 7 am – 7 pm
  • Wednesdays 2-3 pm; 6-7 pm
  • Thursdays 2-4 pm; 5:30 – 6 pm
  • Fridays 2-3 pm; 5-6 pm
  • Saturdays 2-7 pm
  • Sundays 2-7 pm

Can you take one of these hours each week for the duration of the campaign and assist us in completing the prayer coverage?

Document Reveals More Abortion, Sexual Abuse Violations at PP

[LifeNews.com, Birmingham, AL] - A newly-obtained document from the Alabama health department finds even more violations at a Birmingham Planned Parenthood abortion center. The report finds nine cases of underage girls who were victims of statutory rape getting abortions in violation of the state's parental consent law.

The documented cases are so numerous that Lila Rose, the pro-life muckraker who exposed the problems in an undercover video, says Planned Parenthood's license should be revoked.

As LifeNews.com reported, the state health department placed the Planned Parenthood center on a one-year probation last week because of the violations.

Now, Rose's group, Live Action, has obtained a copy of the Alabama Department of Public Health's Statement of Deficiencies indicating it charged Planned Parenthood with additional violations, To continue reading …

Kick-Off Rallies Weds Feb 17, Reno & Carson City

The Spring 2010 40 Days for Life campaign will be starting tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb 17 and running through Sunday, March 28. Join us in either Reno or Carson City on Wednesday evening as we gather to Kick-Off another 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting, Constant Vigil and Community Outreach, as we Pray to End Abortion. In Reno, we will gather at the sidewalk outside 5915 Tyrone Rd, Reno. In Carson City, the Kick-Off Rally will be held at 6 pm, at park behind the Tahoe Woman’s Care center, located at 973 Mica Dr, Carson City (395, East onto Mica, turn right on Smoketree, park at the curb).

Matthew assumes that we will fast, that fasting is an obvious component of our following Christ, and yet we are not to do so in a manner that makes a big deal of ourselves in the process.
