Local Campaign News
Sidewalk Participation Grows
Today there were parents from Bishop Manogue High School, along with prayer volunteers from Reno, Truckee and Fallon who came to the sidewalk to Pray to End Abortion. Even on this day, with questionable weather and when the on-line calendar looked like we’d have fairly sparse coverage, we were blessed with numerous volunteers coming to pray at the sidewalk.
What we have seen thus far during the Spring campaign, is that each day brings more volunteers than we have seen in past campaigns, and groups that have participated in the past are growing in their support. And, our coverage is more constant than we’ve seen before. This is evidence that those who have come to the sidewalk in the past have appreciated the value of bringing their prayers to the place where the killing is done, both during the hours that the abortion site is open and during the weekend and evenings. Won’t you come to Pray to End Abortion?
Video Cameras Recommended
It has been recommended, and I’d like to encourage you to consider this recommendation, that those coming to the sidewalk bring a video camera when you come to pray. Place the camera in your car, or on a tripod on the sidewalk, to videotape you while you are standing in prayer. It is prudent that we have a video record of all that occurs at the sidewalk, as we gather peacefully, prayerfully and lawfully.

Volunteers Needed Sun all day; Mon 7-8 am, 5-7 pm & Tues 7-8 am
On Sunday, we had a volunteer willing to cover the morning who, due to car troubles, has had to back out of praying at the sidewalk this weekend. Can you help fill the gap? This is an especially good time for first time prayer volunteers, as the abortion site is not open on the Sundays. This means you will not need to worry about interacting with the abortion site staff, nor will you find yourself in a quandary as to how to approach women entering the property. Please, sign up on the Vigil Calendar and help us cover the sidewalk in continuous prayer.
On both Monday and Tuesday, we are looking for a prayer volunteer to come to the sidewalk at 7 am. Is this near your route to work? If so, could you spend an hour of prayer at the sidewalk to begin your day?
On Monday, we also have a gap in our prayer coverage from 5-7 pm. Thanks to the Our Lady of Snows Parish, our sidewalk will be covered in prayer from 8 am – 7 pm. Praise be to God for all our faithful prayer volunteers.
You are welcome to sign-up or simply show-up to pray at the sidewalk at any time of the day or night when you are available to join us. Your prayers have value well beyond anything we can see and we welcome whatever contribution you can make to the effort as we Pray to End Abortion.
Please register the hours when you can come pray at the sidewalk by going to our on-line calendar at: www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe
40 Days through Scripture
- Day 12: Luke 14-19 (including: Luke 18:9-14)
- He then addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. “Two people went up to the temple area to pray, one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity – greedy, dishonest, adulterous – even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’ But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me as sinner.” I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.
Remember when we are present at the sidewalk to pray, regardless of how firmly we know that abortion is a moral evil, and as we pray for those who participate in abortion, that we not therefore consider ourselves to be morally superior to those who enter the abortion site. It is in our own humility, our awareness of our own humble condition as compared to the perfection of God, that we can reflect the Love of Christ in an authentic manner to those whom we encounter. An air of superiority is unpleasing to God and will create a distance between us and those around us. If we are to help those in need of Christ, we must be approachable, and reflect the ultimate humility of Christ himself.

National News
Massachusetts Rationing Proposals Show Danger of Federal Bill
[National Right to Life] - By Burke J. Balch, J.D., director, NRLC's Powell Center for Medical Ethics, "Over-promising plus under-funding forces rationing." For months, the National Right to Life Committee has been hammering that point, as regular visitors to our blog at http://powellcenterformedicalethics.blogspot.com/.
We have repeatedly warned that rationing will result if the federal government creates a major new entitlement to health insurance for the uninsured, yet relies on vague hopes that greater efficiency will restrain health care costs instead of providing an adequate, sustainable funding mechanism to pay for the entitlement.
Now we are seeing clear evidence that NRLC is not exaggerating--it comes from Massachusetts.
In 2006, Massachusetts enacted a widely heralded plan essentially mandating universal health insurance coverage, with subsidies to enable the low-income uninsured to afford it. To pay for the subsidies, the state bill cobbled together a series of funding sources, including federal payments, existing state funds for health care for the uninsured, and other sources of revenue that shared one commonality--they were not based on what people actually pay for health care. (For background on why this is a fundamental error, see http://www.nrlc.org/MedEthics/SaveNotRation.html and the webinar that links to that page.)
After the first couple of years of the new program, Massachusetts began to face a mounting gap between the cost of health care subsidies and the available funds. Last year it relied on one-time funding from the federal stimulus bill to help bridge the gap.
This year, faced with mounting evidence that the state simply cannot afford the increasing outlays, Governor Deval Patrick on February 11 sent the legislature a bill that embodies precisely what NRLC has warned will happen on the federal level. Presumably to avoid a "two-tier" system in which the subsidized health insurance would be worse than the health care the rest of Massachusetts residents get, Patrick's bill proposes sweeping measures to limit what any of the citizens of Massachusetts would be ALLOWED to pay for health care! Video Vignettes
My Chance, by Jaime Thietten
Dave Andrusko, editor of the NRL News says, “When NRL Convention Director Jacki Ragan IM-ed me a link to the My Chance video, it came with Jacki's highest commendation. Had Jaime been available, she would have been a prominent part of NRLC's 2009 national convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. You don't have to be a music critic to recognize talent this awesome. Halfway through "My Chance," it's clear that Jaime's voice is a gift from God. It’s an extraordinarily sensitive and powerful pro-life song. We are certainly looking forward to having her share at our 2010 national convention.” He originally wrote an article for his daily blog on the NRL site (www.nrlc.org) on April 10th, 2009. Mr. Andrusko received such an overwhelming positive response that he concluded the natural next step would be to offer the video to the subscribers. (source: http://www.jtmusic.net/home/entry?id=13)
