All Are Welcome / Needed at the Sidewalk
A comment was recently made that those who have been coming to the sidewalk are so much more gifted than I could ever be, so I read and pray from home. Another comment heard was that because we are now asking those who come to the sidewalk to register on-line, a supporter of our efforts has stopped dropping by for spontaneous prayers when she finds herself in the area. And yet another reader asked if her name would be visible for all to see if she registered on-line to come to the sidewalk.
Please know that those who have had the blessing of reaching out to someone at the sidewalk have simply prayed that they be made small so that the Holy Spirit might use them and place the necessary words in their mouths. But what has often not been adequately mentioned is that in addition to a volunteer counseling someone at the sidewalk, these efforts are most effective when there is at least one other volunteer present at the sidewalk, quietly praying in the background, seemingly uninvolved in the conversation, and yet lifting up every word spoken by our sidewalk counselor.
Also, we continue to welcome every spontaneous visit to the sidewalk, as we never know how God might choose to use us. Sometimes we may find that our schedules open up with “found” time at exactly the moment when we have an unknown appointment to change the life of a stranger. What happens if we fail to show-up?
And for those who are uncertain how our on-line Vigil Calendar works, the names and contact information of our volunteers is hidden from all except a select group of volunteers who have been granted the necessary permissions to schedule others at the sidewalk. Those who have these permissions can thereby contact the volunteers at the sidewalk as needed.
Heartbroken Mom Needs Prayer
Please pray for a young mother who recently lost her son. She is heartbroken and in need of our loving prayers.
More From Reno Prayer Volunteer’s Visit San Jose Sidewalk
In addition to the story shared in yesterday’s update regarding the college students whom we pray have fruitful conversations when they share their pictures from the sidewalk, the San Jose visit included an opportunity to speak with a young couple who kindly stopped their car, rolled down the window and engaged in a conversation with the prayer volunteers who approached them. This San Jose Planned Parenthood facility provides birth control in addition to performing abortions, so not all those entering and leaving are necessarily there for an abortion, unlike the vast majority of those who approach the abortion site in Reno. Through this conversation, they began to learn some of the truth about the problems with contraception. As they rolled down their window, the young woman was asked if she was pregnant. “No” she indicated in broken English, she was there for an IUD, which she believed would prevent her from the need for an abortion. She had no idea that an IUD works by preventing the newly conceived life from being implanted in the uterine wall or from dislodging those that may have managed to begin the implantation process, thus causing a (somewhat) spontaneous miscarriage.
What made this particular case especially sad was that this young couple had a rosary hung from their rear-view mirror, an indication that as Catholics they failed either to understand the clear teachings against abortion and/or contraception, or a sad belief that these teachings did not need to apply to their lives. They were amazed to learn the truth, which had not been shared with them by the medical personnel, who should have responsibly informed their “patients” of the affects and side effects of the device implanted in this woman.
The secular culture in which we live so thoroughly saturates us with the message that it is responsible to limit the number of children in a family, that even many devout Christians have bought into this lie. And yet, it was not always this way. Did you know that until 1930, all Christian churches taught that contraception was unnatural and thus against God’s plan for marriage? It was not until the Lambeth Conference that the Anglicans were the first to change their position on the matter. Shortly afterwards, additional Christian churches began to approve of the practice. Now, many Evangelical churches and preachers are strongly teaching that a contraceptive mentality is unhealthy for marriage and society.
When you come to the sidewalk at 5915 Tyrone Rd (for directions, go to: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/westend), please bring some of the referrals to local pregnancy resources that we provide to offer to the women who come to the abortion site. If you haven’t seen this handout, please download a copy from our website. There is a link to it located on the team page, or you can go to it directly at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/resources. These resources provide the women with the opportunity to fully explore their choices before they end up at a dead end.
If you need any brochures to assist the women you meet at the sidewalk choose life or to promote the campaign, please contact Carol Marie at 530-412-1573 or come to the Life Chain event on Sunday to request your copies.
Before you go to the sidewalk to pray and/or sidewalk counsel, please sign our Statement of Peace, located at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/statementofpeace. Those who participate in 40 Days for Life are asked to commit to being peaceful, prayerful and lawful while we are at the sidewalk.
Please Remember to Stay on the Sidewalk or Across the Street
Just a quick reminder that we don’t want to be in the street when we come to pray. Please stay either on the sidewalk or on the dirt across the street when you come to pray. We also are not allowed to block vehicles entering or exiting the driveway of the abortion site, nor can we block pedestrians on the sidewalk. Thank you for your continued cooperation. If you are asked to move by a police officer, please comply immediately and ask for his name and badge number. We’d like to keep track of any encounters between those who are volunteering at the sidewalk and the Reno Police department, so please email us at 40DaysforLifeRenoTahoe@gmail.com or call us at 530-412-1573.
Have You Encountered Disturbing the Peace or a Noise Nuisance?
Have you been to the sidewalk and been subjected to a noise nuisance while there? Did you know that the City of Reno has a code that specifically addresses disturbing the peace and public nuisances?
Sec. 8.12.020. - Disturbing the peace.
It is unlawful for any person to commit a breach of the peace. Such breach shall consist of:
- Fighting or challenging to fight; or
- Conduct or words calculated to provoke violence or a violation of the law by the person to whom the conduct or words are addressed; or
- Making annoying, lewd, malicious or threatening telephone calls; or
- Willfully and unreasonably subjecting a person or neighborhood to any noise which is likely to disturb the peace of persons of reasonable and ordinary sensibilities.
(Code 1966, § 11.12.090; Ord. No. 5047, § 1, 9-28-99; Ord. No. 5387, § 1, 11-5-02)
And further on in the code regarding Nuisances:
Nuisance or nuisance activity. That which is injurious to health, or injurious, indecent and offensive to the senses, or an obstruction to the free use of property so as to interfere with the comfortable enjoyment of life or property, or is against the interest of public morals, decency, safety, peace and order, including, but not limited to, an attractive nuisance, a nuisance per se, criminal activity, the presence of debris, litter, graffiti, garbage, rubble, abandoned, unregistered or junk vehicles or junk appliances, curfew violations, or any other activity, behavior or conduct defined by the council or Nevada Revised Statutes to constitute a public nuisance. Nuisance or nuisance activity includes unreasonably creating, allowing, or engaging in any activity, conduct or use of property that subjects a person or neighborhood to noise which is likely to disturb the peace of persons of reasonable and ordinary sensibilities. [Reference NRS 268; NRS 268.412; 1997]
Sec. 8.22.035. - Nuisances per se defined.
Any of the following conditions are a nuisance per se as constituting conditions which annoy, injure or endanger the safety, health or comfort of any considerable number of persons:
(1) An unsafe or dangerous building; …
(25) Any other condition which creates a blight to adjoining property, the neighborhood or the city, or a nuisance, health, safety or fire hazard identified as such under the conditions set forth in the International Fire Code, International Building Code, Uniform Abatement of Dangerous Buildings Code, Washoe County Solid Waste Management Code, or any other Reno Municipal Code or Washoe County Code or the Nevada Revised Statutes.
While we need to be accountable for our own behavior and ensure that we ourselves do not in any way cross over from prayer and an exercise of our Free Speech to being a public nuisance, we should also be protected from those who seek to disturb our peace or use noise as a nuisance towards us. The Reno Police Department Non-Emergency number is: 775-334-2677. I recommend you program it into your cell phone. If you do contact the police for an incident of Disturbing the Peace or a Noise Nuisance, please also contact us at 40DaysforLifeRenoTahoe@gmail.com or 530-412-1573 and let us know how your call was handled. Please get the name of the officer with whom you spoke, as well as their badge number. If a report was taken (this is what is required for them to follow-up on the matter) be certain to ask for the case number and provide that to us as well.
Come Join Life Chain
Please Join us this Sunday at the Life Chain Event. We will be standing at South McCarran & South Virginia, holding signs which encourage our community to consider the truth that “Abortion Kills Children.” We will be standing at this crossroads from 2 – 3:30 and all are welcome to participate in this peaceful, prayerful, lawful event. If you believe you’ll be able to join us, you can RSVP through our Facebook Event, located at: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=339511168591&index=1
Life Chain started as a gift from God to a small ministry in Yuba City, CA in 1987 and in 2009 over 1700 locations held a Life Chain event. This non-denominational Christian effort is for those who call Jesus Christ Lord, and are willing to declare abortion a grave evil that defames the name and holiness of God (Leviticus 18:21). For more information on Life Chain, call Elizabeth Labat at: 504-296-8670
Please Ask Your Church to Adopt A Day at the Sidewalk
Thus far, our campaign success in maintaining a nearly constant vigil at the sidewalk has been possible because people like you have stepped up and requested that their pastors support Adopt a Day through their church. The vast majority of the churches that have stepped up to this challenge have been Catholic, but this campaign is by no means a Catholic endeavor. The national director of 40 Days for Life is not Catholic, and many of the campaigns around the country are led by non-Catholic Christians. Many of our local regular prayer volunteers are themselves not Catholic and we would like to see our campaign better reflect the entire body of Christ as we Pray to End Abortion. Won’t you please approach your pastor and request that your congregation join on the sidewalk to defend the most innocent and defenseless children be protected from abortion?
What we have found is that those who come to the sidewalk grow in the depth of their relationship to Jesus, Our Lord and Savior. Being there where the killings are done also creates a sense of just how serious this issue is and increases the intensity of the prayers that it will soon come to an end. These are the spiritual benefits of participating in this campaign at the frontlines, not to mention the benefits that occur when a mother sees those who love her child enough to come out of their comfort zone to plead for the innocent life. We can’t save every child that is brought to the abortion site, but on occasion, we see the fruit of our labors, through an innocent life saved. Won’t you come to Pray to End Abortion?
Video Cameras Recommended
It has been recommended, and I’d like to encourage you to consider this recommendation, that those coming to the sidewalk bring a video camera when you come to pray. Place the camera in your car, or on a tripod on the sidewalk, to videotape you while you are standing in prayer. It is prudent that we have a video record of all that occurs at the sidewalk, as we gather peacefully, prayerfully and lawfully.

National Campaign News
286 Babies Saved!
World-wide, there are a reported 286 babies saved during the current campaign. The incredible thing is that we know from local experience that there are saves that aren’t reported to the sidewalk, sometimes for years afterwards, and sometimes they are never reported to those who come to pray and council the women entering the abortion site. Praise God for all those who are saved from abortion and the women who are spared the trauma! Praise God also for those who have been brought to the healing of Our Lord Jesus Christ through the witness provided at the sidewalk.

Vigil Calendar
Reno Adopt A Day Calendar
Date | Church | Contact | Phone |
---|---|---|---|
Sun – Mar 21 | Bishop Manogue High School | Matt Schambari | (775) 336-6000 |
Bring Adopt-a-Day to your church by contacting us at 40DaysforLifeRenoTahoe@gmail.com or by calling Carol Marie at (530) 412-1573. We will schedule your church for a day at the sidewalk.
Volunteers Needed Sat 7-10 am & 12-7 pm, Sun 2-5 pm, 5:30 – 7 pm, & Mon 7-8 am & 5-7 pm
On the weekends, while we aren’t encountering women on their way into the abortion site, we do have the opportunity to have an impact on those who are driving by on Airway or those who walk past. Please come to the sidewalk and assist us in covering the sidewalk with prayer, 7 days per week for 40 Days, as we Pray to End Abortion.
During the week, which hour can you cover with prayer? We especially need you to stop by the sidewalk before going to work. This would give you the opportunity to be present when the doctor and his staff arrive for their day of work. We would like them to see that we are praying for them as their day begins.
Perhaps you can take an early lunch and come to the sidewalk at 11 am, staying to pray for an hour. Or would you be able to swing by at the end of the work day to pray from 4-7 pm? We like to continue our prayers at the sidewalk even after the doctor and his staff have left for the day. If the weather turns, praying from your car still provides the spiritual benefit to the site, but seeing a prayer volunteer standing in inclement weather has turned more than one person from abortion or from participating in the industry, as they see the strength of our commitment. Help us maintain a constant vigil for 12 hours of the day, from 7 am until 7 pm daily. Please register using our online calendar, so we can be certain that the sidewalk is covered in constant prayer.
The business of selling death is typically busiest in Reno on Weds through Friday. Won’t you please commit to pray at the sidewalk for an hour on these days to assist us in filling the schedule?
Please register the hours when you can come pray at the sidewalk by going to our on-line calendar at: www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe. The names of those who sign up on the calendar are hidden from all but a small and select group of volunteers who can assist others in registering their hours on the calendar, so you needn’t fear that you might be harassed by anyone opposed to our prayers, nor do you need to fear that posting your hours is a form of boasting that you are being pious in your prayers. Signing up simply allows us to coordinate our efforts so we can determine where we have holes in our volunteers efforts, allowing us to best use our time while ensuring we maintain a constant prayer covering at the sidewalk.
You are welcome to sign-up or simply show-up to pray at the sidewalk at any time of the day or night when you are available to join us. Your prayers have value well beyond anything we can see and we welcome whatever contribution you can make to the effort as we Pray to End Abortion. If you haven’t already done so, please sign a Statement of Peace, by going to www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/StatementofPeace.
40 Days through Scripture
- Day 25 - Romans 11 – 1 Corinthians 1 (including: Romans 15:1-6)
- We who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves; let each of us please our neighbor for the good, for building up. For Christ did not please himself; but as it is written, “The insults of those who insult you fall upon me.” (Ps 69:10) For whatever was written previously was written for our instruction, that by endurance and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony with one another, in keeping with Christ Jesus, that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Join us as we read the New Testament over the course of the 40 Day campaign.

National News
Momentum: Seven Pro-Life Dems Switch Vote on Health Care
[Susan B. Anthony List, Washington DC] – Politico just reported that Speaker Pelosi is aiming for a vote on health care next weekend. She has asked Members of Congress to clear their schedules and upon hearing that President Obama is postponing a trip to Asia, Pelosi said "I am delighted the president will be here for the passage of the bill. It will be historic."
With radical pro-abortion leaders moving fast, we have got to move even faster. NOW is the time we must act. The vote will be tight, the good news is that Fox is reporting that seven pro-life Democrats have confirmed that they are switching their vote from "Yes" to "No" on the health care bill -- you guessed it, due to its funding of abortion.
And our encouraging message to these pro-life Democrats has been to choose principle over party. Rep. Dan Lipinski of Illinois, who just now confirmed he is switching his vote from yes to no, told Fox News, "Protecting the sanctity of life is a matter of principle."
This no time to back down. If Nancy Pelosi wants a vote next weekend, we must convert more pro-life Democrats to ensure the Senate pro-abortion version of the bill is defeated by the House of Representatives.
Right now, in addition to the patch-through lobbying calls that you funded, we are currently airing radio ads in the following districts: Jason Altmire (PA-04); Paul Kanjorski (PA-11); Brad Ellsworth (IN-11); Baron Hill (IN-09); Steve Dreihaus (OH-01); Charlie Wilson (OH-06); Marcy Kaptur (OH-09); John Boccieri (OH-16); and James Langevin (RI-02).
Please Click Here to Listen to a Sample Radio Ad
Not only do we need to keep these ads up and running in those nine districts, we need to start running more radio ads in other strategic districts--but we need your help.
Our message is clearly working. Our radio ads encourage pro-life Democrats to put principle above party, and mobilize pro-life constituents to encourage their legislator to stand for life. For those that have already switched from yes to no, our radio ads encourage them and put wind in their sails. For those who are wavering, our ads act as a "velvet hammer" to ensure they stand for life

Take Action
Urgent: Health Care Reform Action
[National Committee for a Human Life Amendment] Votes could occur on health care reform legislation at any time in either House or Senate. It is difficult to predict exactly how Congress will proceed or how the abortion funding question and the other issues of essential priority to the bishops will be handled.
It is very important that the language in the House-passed bill preventing abortion funding-the Stupak-Pitts Amendment-be incorporated in its essential features as a part of any final bill.
The USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) has re-issued its health care reform Bulletin Insert/Action Alert (www.usccb.org/healthcare/UPDATED-bulletin-insert.pdf) and NCHLA has updated its Action Alert (www.nchla.org/actiondisplay.asp?ID=279). Both alerts urge the same actions with the same messages. Both alerts direct people to NCHLA’s Grassroots Action Center to send e-mails. Please also pass this information on to your contact lists.
Video Vignettes
Kathleen Sebelius Lauds Senate Abortion Language
For those unfamiliar with Kathleen Sebelius, before President Obama brought her to Washington DC to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services, she was the Governor of Kansas, where her special relationship with George Tiller led her to hold a private party for him and his abortion facility staff in the Governor’s Mansion, at state taxpayer’s expense (see the Operation Rescue article). Now see how she explains why the current Senate Health Reform Bill does not in any way impact “a woman’s right” to coverage for “women’s health services,” code words for abortion funding, through accounting measures that will ensure that all American’s receiving healthcare coverage will be required to pay into a fund that would then cover abortion.
Coming Events
Vigil of Mourning – Saturday March 13, 6 pm
Please come to pray for the potential lost in the lives ended at this abortion site. During this time of prayer, the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be prayed. Bring your own candle, and wear black to signify the mourning for those who have died here.
