Count of Days One Day Off – oops!

A few days ago I realized that somewhere along the line I goofed and missed incrementing the count of the day (one too many late night updates).   Well, I apologize for the confusion this may have caused for anyone who is better at counting days than I obviously am.   I will continue the updates for an extra day to ensure that we have the opportunity to complete our scripture readings.   So, while this update is for Day 40, the scripture reading will still reflect Day 39 and I am committing to putting out at least one more update to help wrap up the Spring Campaign.   I hope you can bear with me!

Jericho March to Close the Campaign - 3 pm Sun

Wrapping up at 3 pm Sunday, we will be completing our daily march around the block containing the abortion site in Reno.   This series of daily marches culminates on Sunday, 3/28, at 3 pm, the final day of the Spring 2010 40 Days for Life Campaign, with a march 7 times around the block, for a total of 3 ½ miles of praying that abortion comes to an end in Reno.   Please come, pray, march, cheer on those marching, celebrate a successful campaign brought to completion and the beginning of the End of Abortion in Reno!

Wrap-up Rally – 5:30 pm Sun, Across from 5915 Tyrone Rd, Reno

On Sunday we will follow the final Jericho March with a Rally at 5:30 pm.   Please join us for this family friendly event.   Invite the members of your church by posting a copy of our flyer in your church lobby. Our Wrap Up Rally will be held across from the sidewalk at 5915 Tyrone Rd., Reno (map located at www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/westend )

Lobster Celebration 7:30 pm Sun - Boomtown Buffet

At 7:30 Sunday evening, we will be going to the Boomtown Whole Maine Lobster Buffet, where, for $20 per person, we can celebrate the completion of 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting, Constant Vigil and Community Outreach.   If you are unable to join us at the rally, you are still welcome to join us at 7:30 pm at the Boomtown Buffet, located on Highway 80 West towards Truckee, CA as you leave Reno.   Park in the first parking lot on your right, near the Casino Entrance that leads to a walkway under the road and the Buffet is ahead to the left as you enter the Casino.

Cars Continue to Stop and State Support of our Effort

Today, while quiet, was a good day to be at the sidewalk.   We have found that the rate of interest by those passing-by is continuing to increase, with the vast majority of the responses we receive being positive and the number of people who actually stop to comment and commend us for our efforts is increasing on a regular basis.   Sometimes it requires a long time for someone to move from curious to supportive to actually being willing to state their support to ultimately joining us in our effort.   Here’s a report from one of the volunteers who stood in prayer at the sidewalk today, in her own words. …

My daughter and I met [another prayer volunteer] at the clinic this morning and we had many honks and thumbs-ups in affirmation.   Only about 3 negative responses. The clinic appeared to be closed, as there was no activity and no music.   One man in a truck drove over to where we were standing in the dirt area and asked if we had something for him to sign (a petition?), but we explained that we were peacefully praying to protest the clinic and abortion.   He wanted to know if we wanted him to throw a brick through the window and we said NO!, we feel that God wants us to operate peacefully.   We told him he could help by praying.   He said he would and thanked us for our efforts.   He also said he was glad to see a young person out with us.

…It's been a good experience for me and I was glad that my teenage daughter was able to be there a few times with me.   It has made an impact on strengthening her faith.   I would like to get more teens out there.   It might help their faith grow and also help to turn some young girls away from the clinic.

It has been suggested by some that our presence at the sidewalk would bring out those who would do violent & illegal acts against the abortion site and therefore we shouldn’t be out there.   This comment has come from those on both sides of the issue.   But as such a simple testimony from the sidewalk shows, those who are frustrated by just how far our nation has gone on the matter of abortion are already angry, and it is by our presence at the sidewalk, preaching the Love of Christ and the willingness to be peaceful, prayerful and lawful that those with more radical responses are tempered and brought around to a healthier perspective.

Another volunteer at the sidewalk today was heartened by the number of volunteers who also came to pray at the quiet side of the road on a Saturday afternoon & evening.   And again, she encountered two cars stopping to state their support for our efforts, one a couple with two children in the back seat who attend Little Flower Church, live nearby and plan on coming to the site on a regular basis to pray, and the other a political candidate for a Carson City local office who intends to invite his Methodist Church to participate.

She had on hand the flyers which we typically hand out to the women who approach the site to abort their children, so she shared this information with these new supporters.   She also had on hand our “Prayer and Fasting Commitment Brochures” which allow others to know more about the 40 Days for Life campaign.   If you are at the sidewalk, even if you don’t have these resources to share, please request if the person commending you for your presence has an email address to which we can send additional information.   If they are willing to provide it, please forward it to Carol Marie at 40DaysforLifeRenoTahoe@gmail.com so that she can follow-up with them.   Also, always encourage these supporters to return to the sidewalk to join us in prayer and to invite their church to join us in the effort.   We need every possible prayer partner if we are going to win in this effort.   It is also helpful to have extra copies of the “Statement of Peace” on hand, so if they indicate that they plan to return to pray we can have their commitment to our principles signed and on hand.

When you come to the sidewalk at 5915 Tyrone Rd (for directions, go to: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/westend ), please bring some of the referrals to local pregnancy resources that we provide to offer to the women who come to the abortion site.   If you haven’t seen this handout, please download a copy from our website.   There is a link to it located on the team page, or you can go to it directly at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/resources .   These resources provide the women with the opportunity to fully explore their choices before they end up at a dead end.

If you need any brochures to assist the women you meet at the sidewalk choose life or to promote the campaign, please contact Carol Marie at 530-412-1573 or come to the Life Chain event on Sunday to request your copies.

Before you go to the sidewalk to pray and/or sidewalk counsel, please sign our Statement of Peace, located at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/statementofpeace .    Those who participate in 40 Days for Life are asked to commit to being peaceful, prayerful and lawful while we are at the sidewalk.

Excessive and Wasteful Water Usage

The sprinkler system in the front of the property at the abortion site has been brought back into functioning condition.   The Truckee Meadows Water Authority closely monitors the use of water, including the water used on landscapes in the area of the abortion site, located at 5915 Tyrone Road.   According to their website, businesses and residences are to follow the same watering schedule, with odd numbered addresses allowed to water only on the following days – Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.   The use of water is controlled based on a series of rules, Rule 2 addresses the Excessive Use of Water and Water Waste.

See http://www.tmh2o.com/docs/Customer_Services/rules/Rule02_20100217.pdf As can be seen in the definitions here, “Excessive” relative to the application of water means an immoderate or unreasonable consumption which results in: water running into any street, road, parking lot, gutter, drainway, … in a steady stream or flow, or collecting in pools or in a depressed area to a depth of one inch or more or … applying … in a manner contrary to any water conservation regulation, policy, rule, condition, directive, or request that has been issued to the Customers of the public water system or that has been given general public notice by the Authority.

The Truckee Meadows Water Authority website states the following:

Report Water Waste in Your Community

Truckee Meadows Water Authority is serious about preventing water waste. You are the eyes of the community so we need your help. If you see water being wasted, please let us know by filling out the form below. A big part of our success in responding to water waste is very specific information concerning the time, day and location.

If you encounter wasteful use of our precious water resources, please go to:

http://tmh20.com//conservation/assigned_day_watering/report_waste to submit a report.   If possible, take photos of what you encounter, especially as it pertains to water flowing on the street and into the storm drain.   Note that failure to provide adequate information is the primary reason that these reports cannot be followed up with corrective action.

Please Remember to Stay on the Sidewalk or Across the Street

Just a quick reminder that we don’t want to be in the street when we come to pray.   Please stay either on the sidewalk or on the dirt across the street when you come to pray.   We also are not allowed to block vehicles entering or exiting the driveway of the abortion site, nor can we block pedestrians on the sidewalk.   Thank you for your continued cooperation.   If you are asked to move by a police officer, please comply immediately and ask for his name and badge number.   We’d like to keep track of any encounters between those who are volunteering at the sidewalk and the Reno Police department, so please email us at 40DaysforLifeRenoTahoe@gmail.com or call us at 530-412-1573.

Have You Encountered Disturbing the Peace or a Noise Nuisance?

Have you been to the sidewalk and been subjected to a noise nuisance while there?   Did you know that the City of Reno has a code that specifically addresses disturbing the peace and public nuisances?

Sec. 8.12.020. - Disturbing the peace.

It is unlawful for any person to commit a breach of the peace. Such breach shall consist of:

  1. Fighting or challenging to fight; or
  2. Conduct or words calculated to provoke violence or a violation of the law by the person to whom the conduct or words are addressed; or
  3. Making annoying, lewd, malicious or threatening telephone calls; or
  4. Willfully and unreasonably subjecting a person or neighborhood to any noise which is likely to disturb the peace of persons of reasonable and ordinary sensibilities.

(Code 1966, § 11.12.090; Ord. No. 5047, § 1, 9-28-99; Ord. No. 5387, § 1, 11-5-02)

And further on in the code regarding Nuisances:

Nuisance or nuisance activity. That which is injurious to health, or injurious, indecent and offensive to the senses, or an obstruction to the free use of property so as to interfere with the comfortable enjoyment of life or property, or is against the interest of public morals, decency, safety, peace and order, including, but not limited to, an attractive nuisance, a nuisance per se, criminal activity, the presence of debris, litter, graffiti, garbage, rubble, abandoned, unregistered or junk vehicles or junk appliances, curfew violations, or any other activity, behavior or conduct defined by the council or Nevada Revised Statutes to constitute a public nuisance. Nuisance or nuisance activity includes unreasonably creating, allowing, or engaging in any activity, conduct or use of property that subjects a person or neighborhood to noise which is likely to disturb the peace of persons of reasonable and ordinary sensibilities. [Reference NRS 268; NRS 268.412; 1997]

Sec. 8.22.035. - Nuisances per se defined.

Any of the following conditions are a nuisance per se as constituting conditions which annoy, injure or endanger the safety, health or comfort of any considerable number of persons:

(1)     An unsafe or dangerous building; …

(25)   Any other condition which creates a blight to adjoining property, the neighborhood or the city, or a nuisance, health, safety or fire hazard identified as such under the conditions set forth in the International Fire Code, International Building Code, Uniform Abatement of Dangerous Buildings Code, Washoe County Solid Waste Management Code, or any other Reno Municipal Code or Washoe County Code or the Nevada Revised Statutes.

While we need to be accountable for our own behavior and ensure that we ourselves do not in any way cross over from prayer and an exercise of our Free Speech to being a public nuisance, we should also be protected from those who seek to disturb our peace or use noise as a nuisance towards us.   The Reno Police Department Non-Emergency number is: 775-334-2677.   I recommend you program it into your cell phone.   If you do contact the police for an incident of Disturbing the Peace or a Noise Nuisance, please also contact us at 40DaysforLifeRenoTahoe@gmail.com or 530-412-1573 and let us know how your call was handled.   Please get the name of the officer with whom you spoke, as well as their badge number.   If a report was taken (this is what is required for them to follow-up on the matter) be certain to ask for the case number and provide that to us as well.

Video Cameras Recommended

It has been recommended, and I’d like to encourage you to consider this recommendation, that those coming to the sidewalk bring a video camera when you come to pray.   Place the camera in your car, or on a tripod on the sidewalk, to videotape you while you are standing in prayer.   It is prudent that we have a video record of all that occurs at the sidewalk, as we gather peacefully, prayerfully and lawfully.

To sign up on the vigil calendar go to: www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe or for the Carson City vigil site, go to: www.vigilcalendar.com/carsoncity .   If you’ve already registered, your username is your email address.   If you have forgotten your password, there is a simple mechanism by which your password can be sent to your email address.   If you still have difficulty getting registered, feel free to send your questions to: 40DaysforLifeRenoTahoe@gmail.com or call: 530-412-1573.

National Campaign News

444 Babies Saved This Campaign

World-wide, there are a reported 444 babies saved during the current 40 Days for Life campaign.   But better than that, since the 40 Days for Life campaigns started, there have been over 2,550 known lives saved.   At the national level, there are several twins known to have been saved, and even one set of triplets who have been spared from abortion.

If you’re not already getting the daily updates from the National 40 Days for Life campaign, go to our website: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe and sign up to receive updates at the top right corner of the page.   In addition to stories from around the country, there is a daily prayer reflection given each day.

Vigil Calendar

Volunteers Needed Sun 7 am – 1:30 pm

We are on the final day of the Spring 2010 campaign.   We have thus far been finishing with a strong presence at the sidewalk, but we could use your help to cover Sunday morning in prayer.   Please, take some of your personal time in a final show of faithfulness to Our Lord as the Spring 2010 campaign comes to a close!

On the weekend, while we aren’t encountering women on their way into the abortion site, we do have the opportunity to have an impact on those who are driving by on Airway or those who walk past.   Join us as we Pray to End Abortion.

Please register the hours when you can come pray at the sidewalk by going to our on-line calendar at:  www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe. The names of those who sign up on the calendar are hidden from all but a small and select group of volunteers who can assist others in registering their hours on the calendar, so you needn’t fear that you might be harassed by anyone opposed to our prayers, nor do you need to fear that posting your hours is a form of boasting that you are being pious in your prayers.  Signing up simply allows us to coordinate our efforts so we can determine where we have holes in our volunteers efforts, allowing us to best use our time while ensuring we maintain a constant prayer covering at the sidewalk.

While we appreciate having you sign-up in advance, you may simply show-up to pray at the sidewalk at any time of the day or night when you are available to join us.   Your prayers have value well beyond anything we can see and we welcome whatever contribution you can make to the effort as we Pray to End Abortion.   If you haven’t already done so, please sign a Statement of Peace, by going to www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/StatementofPeace.

40 Days through Scripture

Day 39 – Revelations 8-15 (including: Revelations 11:16-19)
The twenty-four elders who sat on their thrones before God prostrated themselves and worshipped God and said: “We give thanks to you, Lord God almighty, who are and who were. For you have assumed your great power and have established your reign. The nations raged, but your wrath has come, and the time for the dead to be judged, and to recompense your servants, the prophets, and the holy ones and those who fear your name, the small and the great alike, and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”

Then God’s temple in heaven was opened and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple.   There were flashes of lightening, rumblings and peals of thunder, an earthquake, and a violent hailstorm.

Join us as we read the New Testament over the course of the 40 Day campaign.

To get the complete 40 Days Through the New Testament list, go to: www.40DaysforLife.com/renotahoe/NewTestament, print it out and get started now.

Gaston County Ends Abortion Coverage on Health Plan

[WCNC Charlotte NC, Gastonia, N.C.] – by Beth Shayne - There was no dissent and little discussion among the all-Republican Gaston County Board of Commissioners as they voted to end coverage of elective abortion for county employees.

"I think if we would have known anytime sooner this would have already been taken out," Commissioner Tracy Philbeck said after the meeting. "I think the citizens I represent in Gaston County do not want their taxpaying dollars to be used towards abortion."

The resolution commissioners unanimously approved authorized the county manager to rollback the county health plan's coverage of abortion "to the fullest extent of the law."

That means that abortions would not be covered except in cases where the mother's life was in danger. Gaston County Human Resources Director Pam Peacock told NewsChannel 36 there is no exception for cases of rape or incest, though County Commission Chairman Mickey Price said after the meeting he believed there was such an exception.

"Whatever we can legally do, that's what we want to do," Philbeck said.    To Read the Entire Article

Coming Events

National Pro-Life T-shirt Week - April 27th-May 3rd

NPLTW is organized by American Life League with the intent to increase awareness of the personhood of the child in the womb and the tragedy of abortion.

Primarily, we are concerned with getting people to think of the child as a person from the moment of his or her biological inception. It is much harder to murder a person than it is to "remove a lump of tissues," and it is only when we finally get the nation thinking in those terms that we will be able to restore the right to life of our preborn brothers and sisters.

Just by wearing the T-shirt and being out there in public, you will help to accomplish that goal!

For more information, go to: National Pro-Life T-shirt Week

Crossroads Walkers Coming to Reno - June 5-6

Watch for details of the next Crossroads Walkers as the once again arrive in Reno on their Pro-Life walking trip across the United States.   I anticipate that they will likely once again stop by the First Saturday Rosary while they are in town.   If you haven’t previously met any of the young people who participate in this 12 week excursion, I encourage you to make a point of getting to know them.   I will hopefully have additional details regarding opportunities to meet with them as their visit comes closer.   For more information on the Crossroads walk, go to their website at: http://www.crossroadswalk.org
