Local Campaign News

Reno Less One Save & Other Still at Risk

Yesterday (Thurs), we reported that a family with a situation much like Diego’s from the Spring 2009 campaign was put in touch with the resources necessary to spare the developing child’s life.   Sadly, while we had counted this as a save, we believe that it was this mother who was seen entering the abortion site today, along with what we presume to be her sister-in-law. Please pray for this mother, now that she will have the pain of an abortion to deal with, in addition to the challenges to her marriage.

A third situation was also brought to our attention on Wednesday, and it was again written up in yesterday’s update. The mother who indicated that she was being dragged to Reno from out of town has not been heard from, and we fear that she has not been able to save her child.   Please continue to pray for this young family of a mother engaged to the father of her child and a child who is unwanted by this same father all because they failed to wait until marriage, and now he doesn’t want his peers to know they crossed this line. Why does he not realize that God sees all and he is only compounding the first problem by adding onto it with a second far greater problem, even if it is hidden from mere men.

When you come to the sidewalk at 5915 Tyrone Rd (for directions, go to: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/westend ), please bring some of the referrals to local pregnancy resources that we provide to offer to the women who come to the abortion site.   If you haven’t seen this handout, please download a copy from our website.   There is a link to it located on the team page, or you can go to it directly at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/resources .   These resources provide the women with the opportunity to fully explore their choices before they end up at a dead end.

If you need any brochures to assist the women you meet at the sidewalk choose life or to promote the campaign, please contact Carol Marie at 530-412-1573 or come to the Life Chain event on Sunday to request your copies.

Before you go to the sidewalk to pray and/or sidewalk counsel, please sign our Statement of Peace, located at: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/statementofpeace .    Those who participate in 40 Days for Life are asked to commit to being peaceful, prayerful and lawful while we are at the sidewalk.

New Prayer Volunteer Shares Story of Near Abortion through Coercion

A new member of our team of prayer volunteers shared the story of her near miss with abortion after she became pregnant with her third child.   Her husband at the time was unwilling to support the idea of their family growing to include another child and he insisted that she immediately abort, but she managed to resist him, despite his position as an attorney, with all the legal advantages that provided him.   In her own words …

When I became unexpectedly pregnant with my third child, my marriage was already in trouble.   My ex husband insisted on an abortion, and I told him that was something I absolutely could not and would not do.   He threatened to get my other two kids away from me, wage a bitter custody battle, and do everything so that I would not see my other two kids again.

The pressure mounted through the first trimester.   I did not get an abortion, and for almost a year was a part of one of the most bitter custody battles imaginable.   My ex kept reminding me it was all because I refused to listen to him and have an abortion.

He did not leave me alone for 23 years.   I got custody of the kids at first, then when I lost a job several years later, he came after them and got them.   When I finally got the courage to move to the same city he was in (I was pretty afraid of him), he did everything he could to make my life a living hell.   He finally disappeared from my life after my kids did what all the attorneys couldn't do: they threatened him with [ending] their relationship with him if he did not back off.

No one should go through this.   No one should be coerced or pressured into an abortion.   It is a form of domestic violence...violence threatened to the life of a living being.

Bravo to her for having the courage and fortitude to stand strong in the face of such a trial.   We trust that God will greatly bless her when she reaches her final destination!

New Participants Continue to Join the Effort Every Day

Even as the Spring 2010 Campaign draws to a close, we continue to have new people join our effort each day.   Today, a young woman who attends RCF came to the sidewalk after seeing us standing in prayer.   She asked us what we were doing and felt strongly that this is something that God wants her to get involved in doing.   After talking with a prayer volunteer on the scene, she was provided with copies of the information we have on hand to offer the women who approach the site, as well as a brochure we use to invite others to join our effort of Prayer and Fasting.   Before the conversation was over, she shared that the reason our effort is so near and dear to her heart is that she has had 4 abortions, and now has no living children.   She gladly took one of our large “I Regret My Abortion” signs and intends to return, hopefully with her pastor and their congregation as well.

Yesterday we saw more of the same, as a couple stopped a prayer volunteer to thank her for her presence at the sidewalk.   The husband indicated that he drives a large construction vehicle past our vigil on a nearly daily basis.   He was struck by the fact that we are conducting a Jericho March as each time he drives past he honks his horn 7 times, just like the 7 times they went around Jericho on the final day.   This couple attends the Christ Spirit Filled Church in Sparks, which is a strongly Pro-Life congregation.   He intends to invite his pastor to join us on the sidewalk in the future.

Each has been encouraged to bring their pastors to our Wrap-up Rally on Sunday at 5:30, when we would welcome them to address our audience.   If you know a pastor who has words of wisdom to speak on the subject of life, we would welcome them to join us as we Celebrate the completion of 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting, Constant Vigil and Community Outreach.

Excessive and Wasteful Water Usage

The sprinkler system in the front of the property at the abortion site has been brought back into functioning condition.   The Truckee Meadows Water Authority closely monitors the use of water, including the water used on landscapes in the area of the abortion site, located at 5915 Tyrone Road.   According to their website, businesses and residences are to follow the same watering schedule, with odd numbered addresses allowed to water only on the following days – Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.   The use of water is controlled based on a series of rules, Rule 2 addresses the Excessive Use of Water and Water Waste.

See http://www.tmh2o.com/docs/Customer_Services/rules/Rule02_20100217.pdf As can be seen in the definitions here, “Excessive” relative to the application of water means an immoderate or unreasonable consumption which results in: water running into any street, road, parking lot, gutter, drainway, … in a steady stream or flow, or collecting in pools or in a depressed area to a depth of one inch or more or … applying … in a manner contrary to any water conservation regulation, policy, rule, condition, directive, or request that has been issued to the Customers of the public water system or that has been given general public notice by the Authority.

The Truckee Meadows Water Authority website states the following:

Report Water Waste in Your Community

Truckee Meadows Water Authority is serious about preventing water waste. You are the eyes of the community so we need your help. If you see water being wasted, please let us know by filling out the form below. A big part of our success in responding to water waste is very specific information concerning the time, day and location.

If you encounter wasteful use of our precious water resources, please go to:

http://tmh20.com//conservation/assigned_day_watering/report_waste to submit a report.   If possible, take photos of what you encounter, especially as it pertains to water flowing on the street and into the storm drain.   Note that failure to provide adequate information is the primary reason that these reports cannot be followed up with corrective action.

Please Remember to Stay on the Sidewalk or Across the Street

Just a quick reminder that we don’t want to be in the street when we come to pray.   Please stay either on the sidewalk or on the dirt across the street when you come to pray.   We also are not allowed to block vehicles entering or exiting the driveway of the abortion site, nor can we block pedestrians on the sidewalk.   Thank you for your continued cooperation.   If you are asked to move by a police officer, please comply immediately and ask for his name and badge number.   We’d like to keep track of any encounters between those who are volunteering at the sidewalk and the Reno Police department, so please email us at 40DaysforLifeRenoTahoe@gmail.com or call us at 530-412-1573.

Have You Encountered Disturbing the Peace or a Noise Nuisance?

Have you been to the sidewalk and been subjected to a noise nuisance while there?   Did you know that the City of Reno has a code that specifically addresses disturbing the peace and public nuisances?

Sec. 8.12.020. - Disturbing the peace.

It is unlawful for any person to commit a breach of the peace. Such breach shall consist of:

  1. Fighting or challenging to fight; or
  2. Conduct or words calculated to provoke violence or a violation of the law by the person to whom the conduct or words are addressed; or
  3. Making annoying, lewd, malicious or threatening telephone calls; or
  4. Willfully and unreasonably subjecting a person or neighborhood to any noise which is likely to disturb the peace of persons of reasonable and ordinary sensibilities.

(Code 1966, § 11.12.090; Ord. No. 5047, § 1, 9-28-99; Ord. No. 5387, § 1, 11-5-02)

And further on in the code regarding Nuisances:

Nuisance or nuisance activity. That which is injurious to health, or injurious, indecent and offensive to the senses, or an obstruction to the free use of property so as to interfere with the comfortable enjoyment of life or property, or is against the interest of public morals, decency, safety, peace and order, including, but not limited to, an attractive nuisance, a nuisance per se, criminal activity, the presence of debris, litter, graffiti, garbage, rubble, abandoned, unregistered or junk vehicles or junk appliances, curfew violations, or any other activity, behavior or conduct defined by the council or Nevada Revised Statutes to constitute a public nuisance. Nuisance or nuisance activity includes unreasonably creating, allowing, or engaging in any activity, conduct or use of property that subjects a person or neighborhood to noise which is likely to disturb the peace of persons of reasonable and ordinary sensibilities. [Reference NRS 268; NRS 268.412; 1997]

Sec. 8.22.035. - Nuisances per se defined.

Any of the following conditions are a nuisance per se as constituting conditions which annoy, injure or endanger the safety, health or comfort of any considerable number of persons:

(1)     An unsafe or dangerous building; …

(25)   Any other condition which creates a blight to adjoining property, the neighborhood or the city, or a nuisance, health, safety or fire hazard identified as such under the conditions set forth in the International Fire Code, International Building Code, Uniform Abatement of Dangerous Buildings Code, Washoe County Solid Waste Management Code, or any other Reno Municipal Code or Washoe County Code or the Nevada Revised Statutes.

While we need to be accountable for our own behavior and ensure that we ourselves do not in any way cross over from prayer and an exercise of our Free Speech to being a public nuisance, we should also be protected from those who seek to disturb our peace or use noise as a nuisance towards us.   The Reno Police Department Non-Emergency number is: 775-334-2677.   I recommend you program it into your cell phone.   If you do contact the police for an incident of Disturbing the Peace or a Noise Nuisance, please also contact us at 40DaysforLifeRenoTahoe@gmail.com or 530-412-1573 and let us know how your call was handled.   Please get the name of the officer with whom you spoke, as well as their badge number.   If a report was taken (this is what is required for them to follow-up on the matter) be certain to ask for the case number and provide that to us as well.

Video Cameras Recommended

It has been recommended, and I’d like to encourage you to consider this recommendation, that those coming to the sidewalk bring a video camera when you come to pray.   Place the camera in your car, or on a tripod on the sidewalk, to videotape you while you are standing in prayer.   It is prudent that we have a video record of all that occurs at the sidewalk, as we gather peacefully, prayerfully and lawfully.

National Campaign News

433 Babies Saved This Campaign

World-wide, there are a reported 433 babies saved during the current 40 Days for Life campaign.   But better than that, since the 40 Days for Life campaigns started, there have been over 2,550 known lives saved.   At the national level, there are several twins known to have been saved, and even one set of triplets who have been spared from abortion.

If you’re not already getting the daily updates from the National 40 Days for Life campaign, go to our website: www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe and sign up to receive updates at the top right corner of the page.   In addition to stories from around the country, there is a daily prayer reflection given each day.

Vigil Calendar

Volunteers Needed Sat 7-10 am & 2-7 pm; & Sun 7 am – 1:30 pm

We are in the final few days of our campaign.   We have thus far been finishing with a strong presence at the sidewalk, but we have real holes in the coverage on Saturday and Sunday.   Please, take some of your personal time over the weekend in a final show of faithfulness to Our Lord as the Spring 2010 campaign comes to a close!

On the weekend, while we aren’t encountering women on their way into the abortion site, we do have the opportunity to have an impact on those who are driving by on Airway or those who walk past.   Join us as we Pray to End Abortion.

Please register the hours when you can come pray at the sidewalk by going to our on-line calendar at:  www.vigilcalendar.com/renotahoe.   The names of those who sign up on the calendar are hidden from all but a small and select group of volunteers who can assist others in registering their hours on the calendar, so you needn’t fear that you might be harassed by anyone opposed to our prayers, nor do you need to fear that posting your hours is a form of boasting that you are being pious in your prayers.   Signing up simply allows us to coordinate our efforts so we can determine where we have holes in our volunteers efforts, allowing us to best use our time while ensuring we maintain a constant prayer covering at the sidewalk.

While we appreciate having you sign-up in advance, you may simply show-up to pray at the sidewalk at any time of the day or night when you are available to join us.   Your prayers have value well beyond anything we can see and we welcome whatever contribution you can make to the effort as we Pray to End Abortion.   If you haven’t already done so, please sign a Statement of Peace, by going to www.40DaysforLife.com/RenoTahoe/StatementofPeace.

40 Days through Scripture

Day 38 – Revelations 1-7 (including: Revelations 4:8-11)
The four living creatures, each of them with six wings, were covered with eyes inside and out.   Day and night they do not stop exclaiming: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty, who was, and who is and who is to come.”

Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to the one who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before the one who sits on the throne and worship him, who lives forever and ever.   They throw down their crowns before the throne, exclaiming:

Worthy are you, Lord our God, to receive Glory and honor and power, for you created all things; because “of your will they came to be and were created.”

Join us as we read the New Testament over the course of the 40 Day campaign.

March for Life Europe to Become a Historical and Significant Pro-Life Event

[LifeNews Brussels, Belgium] –  by Bryan Kemper - I am in a small office right around the corner from the European Union Headquarters with a handful of students who are frantically working to organize the first ever March for Life Europe. These students are all volunteers who have dedicated months of their lives to shine the light of truth and life here in Brussels.

I came with a small team from Stand True and Survivors to speak and work to make this March for Life a success. Our team is out on the streets right now with a high school student from Brussels passing out fliers and posters, talking to the youth in parks and train stations. They are walking up to groups of youth anywhere they can find them, sharing the message of life and inviting them to the March.

We started our journey at the Third Annual Student Pro-life Conference in Scotland where we were able to hear amazing pro-life talks and connect with pro-life youth from around the world. We were present to promote the Survivors Pro-life Summer Camp and the Stand True Summer Mission Trip.

We were so amazed by the passion of these young people and their desire to get more active in pro-life work. They asked tons of questions about how to get things started and how to motivate youth in their hometowns. One of the students who stood out to us was a young German woman called Martina. She comes from an area where there are just a handful of active pro-lifers and wants to desperately to see more action at home. We invited Martina to come to Survivors Camp and the Stand True Mission Trip this summer to get trained and equipped for this work. We are excited that Martina will also be joining us here in Brussels on Sunday.

During some of the meal times we sat and talked with large groups of students, encouraging them to continue to take a stand. I had so many amazing conversations with students and received a bunch of invitations to come and speak around Europe.   To Read the Entire Article

Georgia Senate OKs Bill to Stop Race-Based, Sex-Based, or Coerced Abortions

[LifeNews, Atlanta, GA] –  by Steven Ertelt – The Georgia state Senate today approved a bill that would make it illegal to do an abortion when it is done because a baby is a certain race, gender, or because the mother was coerced into having one. Senator Chip Pearson was the sponsor of SB 529, which cleared the chamber on a 33-14 margin.

The Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act would apply to abortion "the same standards of nondiscrimination" that govern employment, education, government and housing, its sponsors say.

The bill provides enforcement of the existing law regarding the Women's Right to Know and it gives women who have been coerced into having an abortion they don't want the opportunity to bring suit against abortionists who violate Georgia law.

Catherine Davis, director of minority outreach at Georgia Right to Life, told LifeNews.com the bill is needed because abortions target black women.

"According to the CDC, of the 38 states that report, Georgia is currently leading the nation in abortions in the black community. African-Americans make up 30% of the population and 59% of the abortions," she said.

"In 2008, according to the Georgia Division of Health, 18,901 abortions were performed on black women. SB 529 seeks to protect these women and their children, from making decisions they did not want to make," Davis added.

Dan Becker, the president of Georgia Right to Life, talked about the importance of the legislation.

"No child should be aborted because of his or her race, sex, or color. If it's wrong to discriminate in the workplace, in housing and in education because of race or sex, it should be wrong to discriminate against a child because she was born the wrong sex," he said.    To Read the Entire Article

National Pro-Life T-shirt Week - April 27th-May 3rd

NPLTW is organized by American Life League with the intent to increase awareness of the personhood of the child in the womb and the tragedy of abortion.

Primarily, we are concerned with getting people to think of the child as a person from the moment of his or her biological inception. It is much harder to murder a person than it is to "remove a lump of tissues," and it is only when we finally get the nation thinking in those terms that we will be able to restore the right to life of our preborn brothers and sisters.

Just by wearing the T-shirt and being out there in public, you will help to accomplish that goal!

Crossroads Walkers Coming to Reno - June 5-6

Watch for details of the next Crossroads Walkers as the once again arrive in Reno on their Pro-Life walking trip across the United States.   I anticipate that they will likely once again stop by the First Saturday Rosary while they are in town.   If you haven’t previously met any of the young people who participate in this 12 week excursion, I encourage you to make a point of getting to know them.   I will hopefully have additional details regarding opportunities to meet with them as their visit comes closer.   For more information on the Crossroads walk, go to their website at: http://www.crossroadswalk.org
