National Campaign Daily Intention

For all fathers who are terrified of being fathers.

A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy habitation.—Psalm 68:5

I had a friend many years ago who confided in me that he was terrified of being a father. He and his wife already had two children when this revelation came forth. “I never knew my father,” he explained, “and I have no idea what a father is supposed to do.” We continued to share about this, as well as pray together. He began to see he had a father’s heart for his children. His biggest problem was not a limitation on love but not knowing how to act out this love.

One day we talked about the verse quoted at the top of this page. I shared that he did know his Father… not his biological father but his Heavenly Father, who had rescued him from a life of destruction not many years before.

“How did your Heavenly Father guide you?” I asked. He talked about the ways he had seen God’s love offered to him and the way the Lord had used circum‐stances and the Scriptures to mold him and mature him.

“Well, the Lord wants to do the same thing through you for your children. Be available to His love and available to your kids. You’ll do fine.”

How wonderful it is to know that God takes a personal interest in each of us, many times using His faithful people – the Church – as channels of this love. No one is fatherless who lives in the Lord. His fatherly care begins at the moment of our conception, as it is writ‐ten, “you knit me together in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:12), and continues to be poured upon us throughout our lives.

Saves Continue Around the Nation

The National campaign reports on several of the 123 known saves thus far, including the following:

… Melissa in Charlotte, North Carolina found out firsthand that because of its widespread availability, abortion can even tempt people of faith. At the 40 Days for Life vigil, she met a woman who was at the clinic to schedule an abortion.

“She broke down crying and revealed that she was a Christian, who had fallen into sin,” Melissa said. The child’s father, a married leader in her church, was pressuring her to have an abortion. “She knew it was wrong, but she didn’t know what to do.” She had spoken to her pastor, but had not received any definitive counsel.

Still, it was obvious the woman knew the truth; her car had a “let God have his way” sticker and the bible was sitting on the passenger seat. “We hugged her and listened to her as she poured her heart out and wept on our shoulder. After baring her soul,” Melissa said, “she chose life!”

Melissa asks for your prayers for this woman. “She has a very difficult road ahead and she is obviously going to be ostracized by those closest to her for making the decision to carry this child to term.” …

Disposal Truck Makes a Pick-up – Out with the Trash

While reports of saves continue to come in from around the country, the abortion site here in Reno was once again closed for business today.   But we were reminded of the death that haunts this place as the Waste Management truck was seen coming in to remove the medical waste generated by this sad business.   One small consolation has been that in the past we learned that the waste removed does not include the remains of the children whose lives are lost through abortion, leading us to conjecture as to what is being done.   If anyone would like to pursue with the City of Reno what permits might be in place to allow for the disposal of this “medical waste” into the sewer system, we could use the assistance in following up on this issue.   It looks as though this may be an infraction worth looking into, a matter of public health, if nothing else.

The site coverage with prayer was less complete than we would like to see but Arlene managed to make time in her day to come and pray.   Today was the first time she has participated in prayer during the course of 40 Days for Life.   She’s seen the signs at the abortion site before, but seeing them today it struck her just how ludicrous they are, especially suggesting that God is Pro-Choice.

Rosemarie also came to the abortion site to pray.   She first came to the abortion site a couple of weeks ago to find the crude recordings blaring from the speakers that Dr. Stutes has placed along the front of his property.   She was amazed that such filth is allowed to be broadcast as he does, but at the time didn’t know what to do about it.   It has been recommended that she and anyone else feel free to call the non-emergency line for the Reno Police Department and to report the violation of the noise ordinances in place.

But today, there was no noise coming from the quiet property, there was no evidence of employees or women present.   The site was peacefully quiet, albeit cold with the overcast weather.   Rosemarie reports that the recordings from her first visit haven’t been repeated in the several visits she’s made since.

Katie visited the abortion site to pray with her children, ages 10, 8, 6 & 3 and they stayed for nearly 1 ½ hours, praying several Rosaries for the end of abortion.   She noticed a police officer driving onto the abortion facility property and then leaving shortly afterwards, waving nicely at the family on his way out.

Will you come to pray today?   If not you, then who?

Coming Events

A Vigil of Mourning – Tuesday, Oct 13, 6:00 pm
On the thirteenth of each month, a group gathers on the sidewalk outside the abortion site to remember the lives that will never be lived, the potential never realized because of the tragedy of abortion.   Come join them, dressed in mourning, as they pray for God’s Mercy.   You are welcome to bring a large votive candle.

40 Days through Scripture

Day 13: Luke 20 – 24 (including:  Luke 23:44-49)
It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon because of an eclipse of the sun.   Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.   Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit”; and when he had said this he breathed his last.   The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said, “This man was innocent beyond doubt.”   When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts; but all his acquaintances stood at a distance, including the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw these event.

Are you willing to travel from Galilee to be there, even if you are standing at a distance during the hour of death?   Please, be present.   The women who enter the abortion site will leave deadened to their potential as mothers.   They will be scarred physically, emotionally, and spiritually.   Is it possible that your prayers will be what is needed to prevent her a lifetime of regret?   Could your prayers be sufficient to spare the life of an innocent child?

National News

Prior to New Supreme Court Session, Cardinal Pleads for the Unborn

[National Right to Life, Today’s News and Views]  … if you read the homily with discernment, it is clear that the whole message was a quiet but unmistakable admonition to the legal profession against the sort of specialization that produces "wondrous formal knowledge" but at the cost of "frequently becom[ing] semi-mechanical and distancing" towards the very people it is supposed to serve.

In many ways his explication of Old Testament and New Testament texts was an extended meditation on what Cardinal DiNardo called the "work of Living Memory," specifically how "The Holy Spirit recalls us from religious amnesia, from forgetfulness..."

A few minutes later, Cardinal DiNardo said, "Yet the Holy Spirit rarely works at the surface of things but probes more deeply into the heart. On the same day of Pentecost, the Church sings a poem, a sequence as it is called, that salutes the Holy Spirit for: "bending the stubborn heart and will, melting the frozen and warming the chill." Anyone who has watched a block of ice melt knows the subtle way that occurs."

When I read this section, I instantly thought of how apt a description this also is of what we are trying to do. Pro-lifers gently seek to (1) awaken our nation from a kind of spiritual amnesia while (2) subtly "bending the stubborn heart and will" and "melting the frozen and warming the chill."

None of this, ultimately, can be successful if we are foolish enough to think it can be done by our own strength. But if we understand the rightness of our cause and who it is who has called us to defend the defenseless, we can rest assured that one day the littlest Americans will once again be welcomed in life and protected in law.
