National Campaign Daily Intention

We pray for a renewal of our zeal to offer generous help to the unborn and their families.

If I have despised the cause of my male or female servant when they complained against me, what then shall I do when God rises up? When He punishes, how shall I answer Him? Did not He who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same One fashion us in the womb?— Job 31:13-15

The ground is level as we stand before God.

Job lived with an awe provoking sense of God’s expectation of him, particularly regarding his obligation to care for the weak and needy. He knew that in God’s economy everyone stands on level ground when it comes to our status as God’s creatures. Because of that central truth, we must take care of each other.

Job also knew that he didn’t deserve any of the good things God gave to him. Instead, those blessings came to Job from God’s benevolent heart.

As an extension of that knowledge, Job instinctively linked his obligation to be generous to others to God’s kindness toward him.

As in Jesus’ parable of the unmerciful servant (Matthew 18:23‐35), Job knew that it is an egregious sin to deny to others what we enjoy ourselves.

He actually calls down on his own head severe condemnation and even punishment should he fail to share with others out of his own abundance (see verses 16‐23).

Proverbs 3:27 reads, “Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do so.” Some things are so obvious that we don’t even need to pray except to ask of God forgiveness and the power to do what so obviously needs doing.

Watching God at Work

The National campaign reports on why we pray at the abortion site, even when it is not open for business. Here is an excerpt from today’s update.

With 40 Days for Life campaigns going on in 212 different communities, it's hard to focus on any one. But I keep hearing success stories from Lake Jackson, Texas -- small victories, for the most part; but those blessings add up.

Lake Jackson is a community about 45 minutes south of Houston that is holding its first 40 Days for Life campaign this fall—even though there is NO abortion facility there.

"As we ventured into this ministry, we had no idea where God was going to plant us," said Shannon Hunt, a local coordinator. The group eventually found a spot to hold its vigil—on a corner near a school. The most amazing validation, however, is the fact that three babies have been saved from abortion through this community effort in a city that does not even have an abortion clinic.

Shannon met a young couple who asked what the group was doing. It did not turn long for the conversation to turn to the young woman's pregnancy. Abortion had been suggested. They had already visited a clinic in Houston. But after talking with Shannon, the woman said, "I can't go through with it." Shannon thinks they were already turning away from abortion when they stopped to talk. "But they needed one more person to be excited for them; one more person to affirm the direction they were heading; one more person, maybe even a pregnant woman, to speak God's truth one more time so they could finally make up their mind," she said. "Grace had brought all of us together."

You may have guessed that the "pregnant woman" sharing the truth is the speaker, Shannon. (Congratulations, Shannon!!) There was no one signed up for the vigil at this particular hour, so even though she wasn't feeling especially well, Shannon went out to pray.

"I was very, very sick the second I got home that day, and did not get out of bed for the next three days," she said. "God's grace got me to that vigil site during that empty hour. Imagine if no one had made it." As Shannon noted, "even in a town with no abortion clinic, God is making a difference."

Carson City Campaign Growing in Strength and Numbers

Thanks to the efforts of Cecelia Merrell, who has been working to coordinate the effort in Carson City, and several volunteers interested in seeing the Carson City effort succeed, it has been doing just that. There have been local business people stepping forward to pray at the sidewalk, and now the Knights of Columbus are beginning to coordinate an effort at the sidewalk. Please join them as they gather to Pray to End Abortion.

Coming Events

A Vigil of Mourning – Tuesday, Oct 13, 6:00 pm
On the thirteenth of each month, a group gathers on the sidewalk outside the abortion site to remember the lives that will never be lived, the potential never realized because of the tragedy of abortion. Come join them, dressed in mourning, as they pray for God’s Mercy. You are welcome to bring a large votive candle.
Pro-Life Solidarity Day – Oct 20, All Day
[Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust] "The Survivors challenge students of all ages to be bold advocates for the 3,500 preborn who are murdered everyday in our country. You have an opportunity to stand with your fellow classmates and an obligation to be a voice for the voiceless. By standing in united solidarity across the world, students everywhere can identify with the preborn children, and our silence will proclaim 'stop killing our generation!' We can and must be warriors for the preborn!" Read the article from Survivors regarding this day long event.

40 Days through Scripture

Day 19: Acts 5 - 9 (including: Acts 7:42-43)
Then God turned and handed them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:
‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings for forty years in the desert, O house of Israel?
No, you took up the tent of Moloch and the star of [your] god Rehan, the images that you made to worship.
So I shall take you into exile beyond Babylon.’

Is abortion like a sacrifice to the god of convenience? What will happen to the nation that serves a false god?

National News

Next Steps to Fighting Abortion in Health Care Reform

Typically an excerpt of a report is provided, with a link to the complete item on-line. When no such link is provided, these reports are not usually forwarded. But the combination of a slow news day (most of the Pro-Life News sources take Sunday off) and the fact that this piece was jam packed with valuable links, the entire message is being forwarded. The following comes from Charlene Yoest, President of American’s United for Life.

[as reported by American’s United for Life] With all the twists and turns in the health care debate, we keep hearing the question: what’s next? So I wanted to take a minute and sketch out for you what we know from our meetings here in the Nation’s Capital and on the Hill.

Next week, the Senate Finance Committee is poised to vote out its health care reform bill. After that, Majority Leader Harry Reid and his allies will determine the content of the final Senate bill--and Americans want to know what’s in it. The New York Times reports that a group of centrist Democratic senators sent a letter to the majority leader, Harry Reid (D-Nevada), urging that the public be given at least 72 hours to review the legislation before debate begins on the Senate floor.

If the public does get a chance to view the bill, what it finds certainly won’t please the overwhelming majority of Americans who oppose including abortion funding in health care reform. Like the other four committees (three in the House and one in the Senate) that have reported out health care reform bills, the Senate Finance Committee failed to include language in the legislation that would adequately exclude federal funding and coverage of abortion.

Senate Finance Committee staff is already working to reconcile their bill with the bill reported out of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee. Ultimately, however, Majority Leader Harry Reid and other members of the Democratic Party will determine the content of the final Senate bill.

Similarly, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the House Democratic Leadership are working to reconcile the three different versions of the House Bill (H.R. 3200) that were reported out of the House Committees, and will therefore control the content of that bill.

Recent intelligence from the Hill indicates that a purported “compromise” on abortion funding and coverage in health care reform is in the works. The template for the language is Rep. Lois Capps’ (D-Calif.) amendment that was added to the House version of the bill (H.R. 3200) during the Energy and Commerce Committee mark-up, with similar language included in the Senate Finance Committee Bill.

But don’t be fooled: The Capps Amendment is not a compromise. In fact, it mandates abortion coverage in the public health care plan; mandates that at least one private insurance plan within a geographic area provide abortion coverage; and allows individuals to apply their affordability credits (government subsidies) to private plans that cover abortion.

The Democratic leadership plans to bring the House and Senate bills to their respective floors in mid-October, providing little if any time for pro-life members of Congress to review the legislation. In any case, the merged bill is expected to be dramatically different than the Senate Finance Committee proposal. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell told Reuters:

"The real bill will be written by Democrat leaders in a closed-to-the-public conference room somewhere in the Capitol. The real bill will be another 1,000-page, trillion-dollar experiment.”

Furthermore, while pro-life members of Congress should have the opportunity to offer pro-life amendments during the floor debate, it is likely that the pro-abortion leadership will use procedural maneuvers to block the consideration of amendments that would exclude abortion coverage and funding.

Our legal team is doing everything they can to ensure that Americans understand that millions of lives, born and unborn, are at risk if Congress fails to pass a health care bill that respects life.

You are among the millions of Americans who believes that “Real Health Care Respects Life” and we are working hard for you to get your voice to Congress. But we can do much more with your help.
