National Campaign Daily Intention
Let us pray that pastors may not be distracted from the priority of caring for human lives.
Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution.
-- Acts 6:1
More folks learning left some yearning.
It is the dawning of a new day. There is much excitement in Jerusalem. Many who dedicated themselves to the faith became disciples (the word disciple means “learner”). The unprecedented church growth was miraculous and undoubtedly brought much satisfaction to the new leadership.
The apostles, however, were about to experience growing pains in their master plan of evangelism.
Projects that engage the community, especially those that are evangelistic in nature, are high on the list of priorities for every duty-bound pastor. Church attendance is a constant concern for every pastor and often his or her worth is measured by it. Unfortunately, just as the original twelve pastors in Acts, they can be so focused on getting people in that they inadvertently end up pushing some people out.
Murmuring is a deplorable deterrent to a harmonious fellowship, yet God used it to get the disciples attention. Those that needed daily attention due to their age and social status were being neglected. This neglect of the Hellenist widows during the daily distribution of food was causing undue grief and needed to be corrected by the leadership. By God’s grace the problem was dealt with, but the lesson remains.
And during these 40 days, let us pray that today’s church not make the same mistake of forgetting the contributions of our seniors, or the needs of the weakest among us, the unborn.

Standing strong in the face of persecution
People often say that the devil doesn’t like 40 Days for Life.
Elizabeth, who is leading the 40 Days for Life in Austin, Texas, has seen all sorts of negativity aimed at the people praying in front of Planned Parenthood during 40 Days for Life.
“We have been cussed at and yelled at,” Elizabeth said. “One lady riding a bicycle past us gave us a huge raspberry for a good 15 solid seconds.” Someone even threw a full drink cup at one the volunteers. Thankfully, this volunteer was holding a sign and the drink hit the sign – and not her.
“Satan is trying his darnedest – and probably throwing a hissy fit – about the light we are shedding into his darkness,” said Elizabeth, “but he can’t keep us down! As we near the end of these 40 days, Austin is as on fire and energized as on Day 1!”
Amy in San Antonio, Texas reports the 40 Days for Life vigil there was picketed. “These atheists stood mocking our prayer and holding pro-choice signs stating the old standby line, ‘my body, my choice,’” she said. “But this actually is a terrific sign that our work of peaceful prayer is making a difference!”
Amy says it’s apparent that Planned Parenthood’s chosen weapon is intimidation. “Right now, Planned Parenthood has noticed a big change in their pocketbook,” she said. “Abortion numbers are rapidly declining and they’ve discovered that we’re not going away. We will continue until there is a ‘for sale’ sign on their property!”
Jesus Himself told us to expect opposition – but that He would acknowledge our faithfulness.
“Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you (falsely) because of me,” He tells us in Matthew’s gospel. “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”
Knowing that Christ is blessing us is tremendously reassuring! The idea of Satan having a “hissy fit” because of our prayerful witness is just a nice added bonus. J

The Art of Showing Up!
So much in politics is accomplished simply by SHOWING UP. Politicians feel the heat when their constituents get fired up enough to make phone calls, write emails and especially make the effort to fill the room at a hearing as we did this afternoon in Carson for the hearing that included AJR3 on the ERA. We had at least 20 – 25 people (probably more – I (Shirley) didn’t count) with several of us prepared to speak regarding the dubious legal process ERA advocates are trying to employ (the so-called “three state strategy”) and the many possible negative consequences if the ERA was ratified.
We patiently waited through testimony on 3 other bills and then the gavel was turned over to Assemblywoman Ellen Koivisto (Chair – Elections, Procedures and Ethics). She announced that due to the late hour a primary sponsor of the bill was not there to testify so she adjourned the meeting without hearing any testimony on AJR3. The hearing will be rescheduled.
We won this battle without having to fire a shot! But we still have to win this war so be ready to SHOW UP again.
Those of us opposed to the ERA vastly outnumbered those in favor. Our presence was definitely felt – to the point that excuses were made and the hearing on AJR3 will be rescheduled (probably at a time when fewer of us can show up – they hope).
This bill did not pass out of committee today because we were there. And we will be there at the next hearing, and the next – every time this thing raises its ugly head - and so forth as long as it takes!
Assemblywoman Debbie Smith told me that she has received more email regarding this bill than ANY other in the past 8 years. Thank you and keep it up!

40 Days through Scripture
Day 30 Galatians 5 – Philippians 1
For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yolk of slavery. It is I, Paul, who am telling you that if you have yourselves circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. Once again, I declare to every man who has himself circumcised that he is bound to observe the entire law. You are separated from Christ, you who are trying to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we await the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

National News
Bishop Addresses Scandal of Notre Dame Honor to President ObamaWhile this story may be of greater interest to Catholics, the scandal of a Catholic University inviting the most Pro-Abortion President in history to speak at their commencement and then to receive an honorary degree reflects a trend in our society to say “My values aren’t important enough to separate me from the world.” The Christian principle that we are to be in this world, but not of this world is universal and how we as individuals respond when situations like this arise affects the very culture in which we live.
For this reason, I (Carol Marie – but Shirley concurs!) find it encouraging to read this message written by Bishop D’Arcy, of the Ft. Wayne, South Bend Diocese to be a refreshing break from the stale responses we all too frequently read from those to whom we turn to lead us in the ways of Christ. This Bishop has made it clear that we must always choose Truth over Prestige. May we all heed his words of wisdom! His comments can be read here.

Be Heard Project Defends Conscience Clause
[American Center for Law & Justice] — You have strong convictions, but President Obama says that doesn't matter. He's ready to rescind the Conscience Clause.
The Conscience Clause was implemented by former President George W. Bush to give physicians and nurses the choice to act according to their conscience - to not participate in abortion procedures if it conflicts with their personal convictions. If President Obama makes this damaging move, if he reverses the Conscience Clause, pro-life doctors and nurses will be forced into performing abortion procedures, despite their individual beliefs. It may seem that those who believe abortion is wrong are in a minority. It may seem like we have no voice and it's shameful to even bring it up. Let us show our President and the world that the voices of those of us who do not believe abortion is acceptable are not silent and must be heard. Details
